The grounds were welcoming, and our dinner setup was simply beautiful. I coordinated a meeting at the Silverado Resort last month and Whetstone was recommended by hotel staff for one of our group dinners. I had the great pleasure of working with Danyel to help plan our dinner. She was wonderful to work with and provided so much helpful input to help ensure a perfect evening. I stopped by in advance of our dinner to touch base and met the lovely owner, Michelle Whetstone. She showed us where our group would be dining and described the set-up, etc. I went ahead of the group the night of our dinner and could not get over the stunning job they'd done transforming the outside courtyard and the dining room. Jaws were dropping when our group arrived and entered the room - we all felt like we'd been transported to a beautiful French chateau. Michelle gave a lovely "welcome" after everyone arrived and shared the history of the winery and information on the lovely wines we'd be enjoying. It really set the tone for the special evening ahead. The dinner was so special and the service very attentive and friendly. Our group is still talking about our Whetstone dinner and requesting a copy of any photos taken in our beautiful room. This is a belated review for Whetstone Wine Cellars, the beautiful historic Napa Valley chateau winery that I had my 40th birthday lunch and wine tasting at with my group of 15 girlfriends. I was looking for a winery to have a private group lunch and wine tastings at for my birthday in Napa, and I am so glad that I was introduced to owner Michelle and her wonderful team at Whetstone. Whetstone is a historic Napa Valley chateau that Michelle and her husband bought and restored. When you enter the chateau you will see details of Michelle's designer's touch. From the moment you enter the winery grounds, Whetstone is magical and breathtaking. All of the girls in my group were "wow"ing and "ahh"ing! Over the course of a few months before the big 40th celebration in Napa I worked with Michelle and her events staff to have boxed lunches with gourmet sandwiches, salads, and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, paired with wine tastings for my group of 15. Our group was seated in the garden facing the chateau. Lunch was fed, and wines after wines were being poured. Whetstone is known for their Viognier, and I particularly liked their Pinot's. Michelle was a gracious host who welcomed our group, gave us a tour, and shared her winery's story. Ace, the mascot Labrador retriever happily joined our group. All in all it was an exquisite and truly dreamy experience for all. Thank you Michelle and the Whetstone Team for making my 40th birthday group lunch an incredible experience! This was our second stop for my friend's bachelorette and it was perfect for our group of 7! There were not too many parties besides our group, maybe 3? And I'm surprised that it wasn't packed, since the service and grounds were so lovely. I did knock off 1 star because I felt the price point for a lunch & tasting ($120 pp) was overpriced for what you get. The lunch was essentially roast beef sandwiches and potato salad plus a biscuit. Filling & delicious, but not especially gourmet, and definitely not $120 per person worth of food. We also originally had a reservation for 8 people and we had 1 girl cancel about five days beforehand; unfortunately we couldn't get a refund because there was a signed contract for no refunds? It seems a little strict in my opinion. Besides that though, we had an absolutely lovely time at this wine cellar. We were greeted by Ace at the entrance and he offered us his bear! So cute. We were seated outside and were offered plenty of shade between all the umbrellas and trees. The lunch included a tasting of three wines. (I for sure thought more wines should have been included at the price point!). All three were lovely and I ended up getting bottles of the rose and a viognier. The service was on point. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and we got a full history of the grounds and the wines with each pour. read more

Whetstone is one of our must visit wineries every time we are in Napa. They are the Queens of Viognier. Between visits we attempt to find other Viognier's that compare to Whetstones, but fail every time. They are that good! The grounds are gorgeous. Sitting outside enjoying a fall Napa day while tasting the best wines is a true joy. The tastings are relaxed, educational, and palate pleasing. To add to the awesome atmosphere, Ace, the head of security and welcoming committee hangs out with his multiple toys. We always go home with a couple bottles and dream of our next visit! read more

While I was excited to try out a few new, small production wineries in Napa, I had no expectations that I would 'discover' my new favorite Napa winery! I was absolutely blown away by Whetstone Wine Cellars. Their tasting room lies in a beautifully reconstructed barn house with a wood burning fireplace, cozy armchairs, and a lovely wood beam ceiling. Their Classic Tasting fee is $45/person and by appointment only. I found this well worth the price for ambiance, attentive service and a delicious selection of wines. I am someone who will pass on the white wines on a tasting menu, because I have such a strong affinity for reds (and in particular Pinot Noir, Syrah, GSM). However, I loved Whetstones' Viognier enough to buy a bottle! My friend and I left our appointment brainstorming excuses to host a private event at the venue - joint birthday celebration, grad school celebration party, ladies who love wine weekend getaway... What a gem! It's right next to the Del Dotto Winery in Napa and it's easy to miss. I got a gift certificate for it on Gilt City and I'm so glad I did. We got the classic tasting with cheese and salumi platter. The platter was chock full of deliciousness -- two types of salumi, two spreads (spicy chutney and a pesto spread), two types of cheeses, and candied hazelnuts and almonds. Our pourer told us that they source the plate from Napa Style. Our tasting was on a grey and rainy day, but the atmosphere inside is warm and cozy. Our pourers were super friendly and accommodating. They poured us water often and described the wines to us in detail. It just felt like a family ran business, very different from the big tasting rooms you visit around the area. I truly enjoyed my experience here and would love to come back soon. read more

3 years ago while having dinner at Redd in Yountville, I had the yummiest and my first Whetstone Pinot Noir. Since then they've been on my must visit list. I finally made it this winter and what a beautiful place! Michelle the winemaker & winemaker's wife gave us a little bit of history as she poured our wine. Definitely a treat! The building is apparently over 100 years old...I want to say 1840s or 1890s. And they've spent years renovating. All that hard work is appreciated. It's been brought back to life so beautifully!! This was my picture perfect wine tasting experience, hands down. You know how Napa is new world...well this was a whole lot of old world right in the center of it all. Simple, elegant & rustic. I think visits are by appointment only. If you're on a tour like I was, see if they can add this place to your day. Oh and their 2011 Pinot Noir did not disappoint. read more

My husband and I were introduced to Whetstone wine cellars by friends and we absolutely loved it! The building that houses Whetstone is so beautiful and it's unbelievable it was a property that it sat there neglected for years! The wine is absolutely delicious, I'm not a huge Pinot Noir fan but I'm converted by their burgundy style Pinot that we had there. Love their outdoor area where you can sit at socially distanced tables shaded by huge trees and you can bring your own food, preferably from somewhere local. The owners Jamie and Michelle, are fantastic, they're husband and wife and they are very social, friendly and down to Earth. They want to make sure you have a really nice time and hopefully enjoy their wines- which we did! We will definitely be back and will spread the word about this wonderful small winery. Whetstone was recommended to me by a wine distributer who was doing a tasting at my local wine shop. It sounded charming, and I liked the fact that it was located away from the mayhem of Hwy 29. The old building that houses Whetstone is beautiful and every bit as old and charming as promised. There was exposed stone everywhere, and the upstairs ceilings were low which is typical for a home built over 100 years ago. I really appreciate our hostess letting us split a tasting. It was later in the day, and we didn't to have an excess amount of wine. The tasting included some delicious marcona almonds as well. We went through a viognier, 2 pinot noirs and a syrah. Nothing really stood out to us so we only paid for our tasting. It was a nice visit over all, but I wouldn't say it is a must do in Napa. read more

My girlfriend and I visited Whetstone on a Sunday afternoon for their classic tasting. We were greeted by the owners' dog Ace who walked with us from the parking lot to the tasting room. The tasting room is an old stone cottage with a beautiful patio located on the Silverado Trail. This is a smaller production winery in Napa. The tasting is very intimate and allows the employees to really interact with the guests. There were only 6 people tasting and one employee. They require appointments to maintain this atmosphere. We've tried to get a day of reservation in the past and have been unsuccessful. However, they did say that you can stop by and if they can't give you the full tasting experience you're welcome to purchase a glass or bottle to enjoy on the patio without an appointment. This is a great winery to go to if you're experiencing some palate fatigue from the big Napa cabernets and need to change it up a bit. Their tasting features some different varietals than many of the other wineries in Napa. The classic tasting consisted of a viognier, two pinot noirs, and a syrah. I don't consider myself much of a pinot noir drinker, but these were fantastic! Our server, Jenna, was happy to provide other recommendations for our time in Napa and even let us revisit a couple of the wines when we couldn't decide what to purchase. We ended up buying three bottles to take home. We will definitely be recommending Whetstone and returning in the future. read more

I had an excellent first tasting experience here a couple of months ago with my sister who is a wine club member. Unfortunately we had a poor experience at their Fried Chicken Friday event last night and likely will not return to Whetstone again. Fried Chicken Friday was a horrible value. For a group of 4, you pay $100 for a bucket of chicken, 4 biscuits, and 2 tiny sides. They ran out of butter and jam for our biscuits. The price does not include wine. I thought it was bizarre that we were not even greeted with a taste of one of Whetstone's wines which is customary for wine club members at events at other wineries (Chateau Montelena, Scribe, etc). The owners were unwelcoming and made us tie our golden retriever puppy up off the property even though we could not find a no dogs policy anywhere on the invitation, confirmation email, or website. With so many choices for wineries with world class wines, beautiful grounds, and more friendly staff, I would recommend you skip Whetstone and go somewhere else. read more
