a NO for me. It was…read morevery confusing for me to find their entrance. The doors are located right next to the garbage bins, so the smell will be "pleasant". The receptionist was really nice to me. Their freaking toilets are dirty, nasty and smelly. The equipment is very old and there is only one cable machine which sucks. The smell inside the gym itself is really bad, so I suggest they would turn on the fans. Overall, I was disappointed because their reviews were mostly 5 star. Maybe they were just friends with the owner, Idk. P.S. The prices are great though $49 for students and $59 for regulars, but they do not even have a normal water fountain for reusable bottles.

Elgin Fitness was a great choice for me because I don't feel any pressure from staff or members and there isn't a big financial strain. I was given a day pass to try out the gym before committing to a membership. There were no sign up fees and there isn't a contract (if you sign up for automatic payments, they want you to stay around for at least 5 months though) and no penalty for cancelling (just a 30 day notice). The rates are really reasonable--we got a couple's plan for $80 and you can't really beat that anywhere else. I really like that the membership includes access to yoga classes. I went to one today, my first ever, and found it to be a relaxing and invigorating experience. The instructor wasn't overly serious and she was open and made the environment feel safe. When I couldn't hold a pose for as long, or had to modify a pose, there was no judgement and I felt positive about my body. The change rooms have been clean and well kept every time I've gone. They even have hair dryers! There are showers, bathrooms, lockers, and a space for beautifying oneself. The change rooms have never been crowded and I've never had a problem getting a locker (free, just bring your own lock). The gym itself is everything that I need and nothing more. There are a variety of cardio machines--treadmills, stair climbers, ellipticals, upright bikes, recumbent bikes. I've never had to wait for a machine and everyone I've seen use them remembers to wipe them down after use. There is also a good assortment of weight training equipment and a stretching room. The stretching room has swiss balls and mats and the yoga classes are held here--which means the room isn't open to everyone when a class is in session. So if you're within walking distance of this gym, I would recommend trying it out.

The class consisted of a perfect combination of stretching, body weight exercises, holding positions, and aligning your body. It can make your body more flexible as well as strength and tone your body. Whether you are a beginner to fitness or an elite athlete, the exercises are as challenging as you make it. And there is music playing for the majority of the class. Upbeat and feel good music! Sarah was the instructor and she was friendly, upbeat, and knowledgeable. She talked through each exercise and demonstrated it perfectly. She motivated the class and helped each student when they needed it. She eats, breathes, and sleeps the Daily Method and you can see her passionate right away when you first meet her. Honestly, as a guy I didn't think it would be a work out or that it wouldn't be for me but I was completely wrong. The class was a great work out and the environment ultra supportive and warm. I would highly recommend checking them out.

They have combination locks (you set the combination yourself!) so you don't have to bring a lock (phew!). As I was walking into class I was told to grab 2lbs weights. My first thought was "I can totally carry more than two lbs". Hahaha boy was I wrong! If this is your first class do not roll your eyes at the 2lbs suggestion! The class was energetic and focused on small movements. You would think that it wouldn't do much but it really targets your muscles! Sarah, the co-owner of the studio, is amazing. She's helpful and energetic and she really pushes you through when you think you can't do that last set. The workout was amazing. The studio is beautiful, clean and a great friendly atmosphere. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a challenging workout.

I'd tried a bunch of the big corporate gyms and always quit. I'm not even sure why I decided to try Greco's 10-week plan. It's pricy, for sure, but some girls I work with had raved about it, and I knew a new one had just opened on Sparks. From the start, everything about this place appealed to me - knowledgable trainers, friendly owner, good space, short (45 min) classes. I wanted to die my first time out, but I slowly got stronger. And it's always fun. The style is crossfit-esque - weights and cardio mixed together - and the classes are no more than 25 (though if you pick the right times, you can end up with just 5-10 others). The change rooms are too small, but that's never been a huge problem for me. The location is great for those who live and work downtown. Basically, if you're willing to shell out some extra bucks, I can't recommend this place enough. I've been a member for six months now, and it's still never boring - and only annoying when Justin Bieber is on the music rotation.

The owner, Everett, has been extremely helpful, thoughtful, and teaches really well. He demonstrates the moves, and is aware of how the body works, and how folks learn. He does not sacrifice form for reps or weight and is focused on moving in healthy ways. He suggests various modifications for those who need them, and is easy to work with. He is definitely aware in the emotional/cognitive aspects of health - a trait that makes him stand out. The classes have been extremely unique, with varied exercise routines each time, and challenging to all parts of the body. The people at this gym are friendly and helpful, and easy to approach. The more experienced members help out the newer people...it's great to be welcomed in this way. This gym is clean, reliable, and low-key. There is sufficient equipment for the classes, it's neat and accessible, and there are thoughtful touches such as a pile of cloths and cleaner to use for wiping down equipment, a 'dirty cloths' pail to discard used cloths (so they are not hanging around all over the equipment), and plenty of fresh air circulating. All of these might sound like minor details, but these are things I feel and notice when I'm spending my time in a gym. Crossfit Bytown has these small touches mastered. It feels like my home in there. Finally, there is a social aspect to this gym that extends beyond its walls: Social media connections, email, and text messaging are added touch points that keep me and other members in the know, and I can opt in to whatever amount I want. I feel very supported! Nice work, CF Bytown!

I started doing Pilates because I hadn't tried it, thought it might help my core strength, and probably wouldn't hurt my feet. I didn't anticipate that it would help my feet. As a result of the core stability that I've gained, I have started running again and am over-the-moon. Everyone that I have interacted with at Pilates Space has been great, whether it's Laura and Charlie responding to my emails, doing private sessions with Charlie and Nataliya, or doing duet classes with Charlie and Jane. Charlie took a particular interest in my foot issues and made some recommendations on Melt Method techniques I could use to alleviate the tension, which I have used at home with great success. At first I didn't like that I needed to complete and Intro program to be able to participate in group classes, but after doing the program I realized it's value: I learned a lot, I met a number of instructors, and now that I know how classes progress, I won't be a nuisance with too many questions. I have always found the space to be clean and the lockers (in the women's change room, at least) have key locks available for free - note: not all the lockers have locks, so you might to have a back-up lock with you. The 2nd floor space is really gorgeous -- lots of attention to detail from little potted plants and clean hardwood floors (with stickers, so people know where to line up their mats to maximize space in busy classes -- so smart!). There is just 1 studio but it is spacious with lots of props available. There is a small boutique, and the women's change room has 2 showers as well as small lockable cubbies if you bring a lock. They have filtered water for your water bottle. Washrooms are across the hall. I felt immediately welcome and the girl at reception was really nice. The 2nd time I came, I was also warmly greeted. I like that they have a wide variety of classes, clearly marked on the schedule as room temperature, warm, and hot. I did a warm "go with the flow" class, which was like a vinyasa style and could be as rigorous as you wanted. I also went to a morning community flow ($10 drop-in), which was also great, with lots of hands-on adjustments and relaxing, non-intrusive music. Both teachers I had were friendly and open in their approach. The other students were from all levels and backgrounds. It does seem like a place where anyone would be welcome and if I lived in Ottawa, I could see myself becoming a regular here. For any info, see their website -- it's very nicely laid out and had lots of info so I knew what to expect.

The rebrand to "Elevate" and the complete rebirth of the physical studio has made it clean, warm, inviting and super zen. There are temperature choices too for those who would like to have a variety of classes. Please note that the hot classes are truly "drip, drip, drip" classes. There is pretty much a class at your fingertips from 6:15 am (hard core types) to 9:00 pm (time to sweat it out and go for a beer). I've found that the class participants are a nice mix of young/not-so-young, men/women, newbies/yogipros. I recommend trying one of the "ball/tuneup" classes. They will change your life ... or what you thought was your life. Ample changerooms, lockers and showers for men and women. Students are welcome. Discounts available. Lots of packages to suit your busy lifestyle. Yoga mats and towels can be rented. Yes, it's on the 2nd floor and there are stairs, so there is an accessibility issue.
