Simple. Convenient. Local…read more I was spending a few days in town locally. I had the opportunity to stop in a couple times. This market is the main cafe, convenience store and gas station in a small rural town with a population of just over 150 residents. Service was friendly and prompt. Coffee was hot. I stopped in one morning to have breakfast. I ordered their Denver Omelet which is a three egg omelet filled with diced tomatoes, green peppers, onion and chunks of ham for $11.70. I added cheese for an additional 60 cents. It comes with hash browns and your choice of toast. Quite a hearty breakfast and very reasonably priced! I enjoyed the omelet so much that I went back the next day and ordered the same thing. There were 4 or 5 different folks working in the cafe / store when I was there. They seemed to share different roles from waiting, cashier, pumping gas and minding the store. The store itself carries a variety of essentials, frozen meats & seafoods, beverages and snack items, typical for many other convenience stores. Should I visit the area again in the future, I would definitely stop in for breakfast.

We were there recently and stayed next door at the Riverbend Motel. The cafe is part of the market…read moreand as another person noted there is generally one person (The owner) doing everything. She does take a couple days off so there are others that work as well when it is busy, and when she can find the help. The food is good and she gladly made me a custom sandwich one morning. I know she is interested in retiring so that could happen and they could close. I will post pictures of inside and outside soon.

Fossil General Mercantile - Yes this is a cup of good old fresh brewed coffee for .50 nothing fancy I'm still the best you'll have, cost in a long time!

They have clothing and souvenirs and food and general staples and a little bit of this and a little bit of that. They remain the quintessential, modern day, yet old-fashioned hub of activity in small town America. Go up the street to the hill behind the high school football field and dig for fossils and stop by the general Mercantile and show them some love. The people are nice and the service excellent. Incidentally, we were able to get a cup of fresh brew coffee for $.50, yes you heard that a cup of coffee for $.50.

During the short time I was in the store, buying ice cream and wine, I saw many other shoppers; both locals and passer-throughers, like us. One of the locals I saw was the town constable. He was at the register in front of me buying doughnuts. When I pointed out to him he was falling into a stereotype, he smiled a guilty smile and told me, "I know. I had hoped they would have been in the bag before anyone noticed." If I lived in or around Fossil, I wouldn't mind doing all my shopping at Fossil General Mercantile. That's a good thing: because otherwise, I'd have to travel many many miles to find something bigger or better.
