Came here for the first time because this was the closest place to me in Clinton, IA that sold brisket. We ordered the bbq nachos (heavy and fulfilling), bbq fries (also heavy and fulfilling, the pulled pork was very delicious), monster spud (super fulfilling and delicious), and the choice meat platter which I chose the brisket (huge pieces, a bit dry, but delicious with the spicy bbq sauce), pulled chicken (really dry and not that great), and the ribs (fall off the bone tender and dry rub is flavorful). Stopped in for some bbq and enjoyed the locals atmosphere. The menu is limited, but if you're going for BBQ, they have that! The meat was flavorful and tender. I got a side of mac and cheese. My take on Mac and Cheese is that if it's good enough to be on a menu, it needs to be good! Otherwise you can pass it by for someone else because it's kind of common. Was excited to try this place as Im always looking for new places to take the wife. Had the chicken nachos for lunch as I was not overly hungry and thought that I would be safe with something simple. They were mediocre at best. Chicken had no flavor and was merely pulled boiled chicken. Service was fine but based on that dish I am not likely to return. This is a long overdue review! We went here a few months ago during a road trip. This might be the best brisket I've had anywhere. The meat was celiac safe, though I'm not sure if the sauce is as I ate it without sauce (isn't that the true test of great brisket? That it doesn't need sauce?). I don't recall if I ate fries / if the fryer is dedicated gluten free but I sure do remember the brisket! We'll definitely stop here again if we are passing through next year. read more

We had two of their appetizers for our meals and they give ya a load! We had their bbq fries and their bbq nachos. My drink was also amazing and is called Swamp Water One thing that is really unique about this place, is that they have a walk up window for busy days. They said their walk up window doesn't have everything on the menu like in the restaurant, but that is so it is quicker for people walking by. We stopped in for lunch. Was greeted by two people whom we assume are the owners. Was advised on Sundays they offer two rack of smoked ribs with a side as the special. We were advised of drinks: beer, tea (sweet, regular, raspberry) and coke products. Drinks are served with metal straws. Due to an pineapple allergy I inquired if their BBQ sauce contained pineapple juice as was pleased to hear no. We were also advised all their meats were served with no sauce just their own blend of dry rub. My friend selected the special with Mac & cheese. The ribs were so tender the meat fell off the bone. He selected the hot bbq sauce as a dipping sauce and stated it was just mildly spicy and full of flavor. The hubs selected the 10oz brisket dinner with cottage cheese and fries. Again the brisket was so tender it just fell apart with the fork. The brisket was full of flavor he elected to a skip the sauce. Fries were crisp and fresh. I went with the original brisket sandwich on Texas Toast and mac & cheese. The brisket was flavorful, tender and moist. I did elect to add a little of the original bbq sauce. It added just a hint of sweetness. The Mac & Cheese was fresh and creamy! We also elected for an order of fried pickles. Plenty for 3 adults to share. They were crisp and amazing! Excellent food here! Ordered a half-rack of ribs and two sides. One BBQ beans and the other fries. Also, got Texas toast. The rib meat just melted off the bone. The sauces were excellent as well, although I found myself not really using much sauce because I didn't want to take away from the flavor of the meat. This is a great location with a small bar and some TVs scattered throughout to watch the game. Came here on a Sunday for lunch, so got to watch some football while I ate. My husband and me were in town to check out the American Pickers store, Antique Archaeology. We went to the downtown area to check out the local shops and came across What BBQ. Absolutely phenomenal! My husband had the brisket chili, which the chef had just come up with the recipe the day before! Best chili ever! Amazing corn bread came with it. I had the loaded baked potato, topped with 2 bbq ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, butter, sour cream, bacon bits, shredded cheese, and green onions. This is a tough one. The folks are so nice and the place is spotless. They also have some outdoor seats. It's expensive but I am used to that for BBQ. We found the food to be a mix of highs and lows. The sausage and cheese appetizer is a showstopper - just wonderful and would stand up against any sausage trio west of Berlin. The brisket was a conundrum of taste and texture. It had nice bark but once past that I wasn't getting a lot of smoke flavor. It was tender and pleasing, but I wanted more smoke. I ended up adding their hot BBQ sauce which helped, but brisket shouldn't need sauce. The rest of our meal was OK. I would give them another shot as with Covid restrictions and all, it's hard to get the full picture of what any restaurant can really offer. read more
