I thoroughly enjoyed the visit to Whakarewarewa, a living Maori village. After seeing all of the other tourist packages for Maori "experiences" (performances and dinner), I was more intrigued by this one since you tour a real village. This package is a lot less flashy and pretty, but also almost 1/4th the cost (35NZD for admission vs. 100+ for experiences through Te Puia). Since it was less expensive, I didn't really expect much.
However, we had a great time learning and experiencing Whakarewarewa (on top of learning how to pronounce the name).
- Guided tours happen multiple times daily and are a must. It was a pity that we were the only ones who stayed around for the tour, but it was such an enlightening experience. We learned about the Maori people and culture, life in the village with about 25 families, and we got to explore the grounds and natural geysers and pools. Plus, our tour guide was a local who made the one hour go by so quickly and was very entertaining.
- Cultural performance daily at 11:15am and 2pm. Definitely make sure you check out the performance (it's already included in your ticket price). It's only 30 mins, and the group does a great job of explaining the dances and songs and getting audience participation.
- Nature trail walks are a bonus to the package. After exploring the village, take the two short and easy walks to see the Green Lake and walk through a hot lake.
The whole visit will take only 2-3 hours at most and is a worthwhile point of stopping while in Rotorua.
Bonus: be sure to pick up one of those New Zealand tourism books from the airport or hotel. We found a 10% off coupon in ours. read more
