We have Santa Fe, the "City Different", home to painters, sculptors and other artists the world over who thrive (even in a recession), and the town houses its share of artists who practice artisan athletics, music, meditation, what have you. We have Taos and the surrounding communes, wherein you'll find celebrated maestros, architects and off-the-grid nomads; if you haven't driven west toward the gorge, put it on your travel to-do list, you won't be disappointed. Key word: earth ships. Silver City: artisan hideout. Same goes for Tularosa, Cloudcroft, Los Ojos, Red River, Jemez, Zuni, San Antonio... I could go on and on. These are the sneaky peeks, the places where funky personas with wild ideas relocate, where they can live in relative calm, bask under endlessly open skies, where they often create grand visionary works that encompass the entirety of their lifetime journeys. O'Keefe did the same at Ghost Ranch. Personally, I love bumping into a gallery or a store along my travels, where these fascinating people will find a few minutes for some straight talk about their work. I've found them in corners of the state I never imagined they could exist, but they do, they persist, and I'm always thrilled to find them. I often wonder how they survive. Surely, selling the occasional canvass to the wandering traveler won't pay the rent. Enter Mariposa, a gallery in the heart of Nob Hill which showcases 90%+ local artists. Paintings, mixed-media and a smattering of jewelry provide welcome access to some of the most vital artists in the New Mexico realm. This place focuses on artists who remain just below the radar, who could use a little financial backing. The business has grown with time, changing locations twice, and over the years they've developed a long list of artists who've benefited from their publicity and advocacy and now give back, promoting the next generation. Fantastic. You don't have to visit with the intent of a purchase. Come and devour with your eyes. You won't forget it.

The artists alsowork in the gallery, so you get an artist perspective, when your chatting with folks. They have a friendly white dog that's eager to greet any customers and make sure you see the art! The prices were reasonable for the quality of work that you're getting. Most of the stuff wasn't impulse buys, but something that you'd proudly display on your mantle of your southwestern home. Parking can be difficult, since it's on the Albuquerque main drag, Central Ave. There's metered parking out front.

She treated me with no more respect than as though I were an ignorant gorilla seeking to purchase something that was above my unrefined, know-nothing inabilities. All I wanted to do was make my purchase and leave quickly, as her contempt towards me for my not having a doctorate in contemporary fine art was palpable. To the very end, she disregarded my concern about wrapping the one-thousand-fourteen-hundred-dollar paintings, dismissing my inquiry because they were sale items. I will never walk into a Weems Gallery again: Precisely because of her.

When I saw that vase in the window I was so drawn to it. When I went into the gallery and met Suzanne she told me about the vase and Ira, and gave me space to get to know the vase. When I did decide that I had to buy it for my son and his girlfriend Suzanne agreed to ship it for me, but that's not all. She even wrote a very personal letter to them telling them about Ira and his background, and how the vase was made. Fortunately it arrived in San Francisco unbroken and they were delighted. Thank you Suzanne for making the whole experience so wonderful. I will come to see you whenever I am in Albuquerque.

Suzanne, the gallery's director, was nice, assertive but not overbearing, and incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. There were some nice pieces from a variety of artists, but we were completely taken by Virgil Ortiz, and ended up buying two of his large pieces. Given the gallery's modern focus with local artists, it's likely we'll be finding more pieces in the future. Definitely give this place a visit if you're in the area and interested in art.
