We recently visited for the first time over the Memorial Day weekend and were pleasantly surprised…read more We only hiked the Cascade Trail so that is what my review will be on. The park website and things online are very confusing. One site says, permit not required and another say one isn't. The sign at the park also says permit required, but there is no where to purchase one in person or online. We took the chance and parked without one. I did see a worker driving around and he didn't seem to be checking cars. The map seems okay for general navigating and there is signage around. The trails are marked okay I think. There could be some improvement, but the Cascade Trail is a big loop so it isn't a huge deal. The trail was well maintained. A little overgrown in places, but nothing terrible. It's also really flat except for the end of the trail where you need to walk up a big hill to get back to where we parked. My kids did fine with the trial the whole time though. The bridge is super neat and my kids had fun crossing it. The falls were pretty and a nice treat, but you really have to wander around to find a good view of it. Luckily none of us minded that. The creek is really nice to play and walk in. That was by far my kids favorite part. We also found lots of fossils to explore and look at! It was a little muddy after all the rain we had received, but nothing terrible.

My favorite 'hiking' spot in Butler County…read more My favorite part about this preserve are the trails. There are multiple trails that connect to each other, so if you get bored with hiking your usual trail, it's easy to mix it up a little bit. They are all well kept and maintained. Sometimes there is some litter, but we pick it up. There are two old building foundations on one of the trails and a piece of farm equipment grown into a tree, pretty neat! The park is big, lots of space.

A long drive north of downtown on I-75, the Voice of Freedom Park looks to be a relatively new…read morepark, or at least, a park that has seen a lot of changes recently. There is a huge, amazing playground, plenty of paved trails to walk, clean restroom facilities, and a beautiful lake to explore filled with birds and other aquatic life. However, Voice of Freedom Park, for the most part, doesn't feel very park-like. There is a ton of empty wasted space. Beyond what I mentioned above, the park is a bunch of overgrown farm fields with nothing. It's the perfect example of a park placed smack in the middle of suburban sprawl. It's artificial...so obviously man-made and sterile. It also doesn't help that the park is surrounded by shopping centers and office parks on all sides. This place desperately needs trees! Another downside is the fee for annual parking. It's $5 for an annual pass that gets you into all of the Butler County MetroParks. This is less than the pass for the Hamilton County Parks system, but we have tried several other MetroParks since buying our vehicle permit only to find most of them to be awful! They lack features and maintenance. Bummer! Overall, if you are in West Chester, this is an okay place to take lunch, take a stroll, or let the kids play. Otherwise, it isn't a destination.

This is a nice park to walk around if it's not too hot. It's a $5 yearly admission pass to walk the…read morepark system part. But, you can also just walk the rest of it without paying. Since it's a new park, the trees are not full grown. But a lot of birders come here to see ducks and other species native to prairies. There is a lake and snack machines and the paved trail meanders along the lake edge. They held some water-skiing competition finals here not too long ago. So, it's not a tiny lake. You can also fish and paddle boat. It's an interesting location; Voice of America park, because it's part of the whole VOA ("the official external radio and television broadcasting service of the United States federal government"-courtesy of Wikipedia) propaganda era left over from WWII . This locale was decommissioned during the Reagan era. However, VOA still operates. So, if you do a little (careful of your footing because of big divots in the earth) walking outside the park, proper, you can find the cement footings of the huge radio antennas that used to dominate the area (you can even see them on google maps if you look closely). Apparently, people who used to live here when it was active could receive the signal through their appliances even when their radios were not on (testimonial from my neighbor). You can still see the strange electrical grid for the antennas as you drive through the Tylersville entrance on your way to Rumpke's single-stream recycling drop off center.

You can book your reservations online however we decided to pay up at the desk due to the weather. Didn't know if it was going to rain but it turned out to be a gorgeous day. First it is required to sign a waiver then you check in. There are several options. You can choose between the 2,3,6 or 8.5 mile trek. You can rent tandem kayak, single kayak or canoe. We opted for the tandem kayak $86.00 for the both of us and we did the 6 mile round trip. You pick your life jacket, wait for your name to be called out and you take a bus. From there they will drop you off depending on what mile marker you chose. The staff makes sure to explain where to not go and when you have to be back. Make sure you are back by 7:00 pm. Once you get to the river you pick your paddle and kayak/canoe and off you go. You may hit some rough shallow spots but for the most part, it was smooth sailing. Make sure to pack a small cooler for your drinks. Stay hydrated. We also kayaked to Little Miami Brewing and had a couple of libations. That was fun! Overall the whole experience was great and I had a blast. Coming back the staff was super friendly, helpful and laid back. I would definitely come back. This place rocks.

The location was easy to find on Round Bottom Road, big grass/field parking lot and well - set up registration area. Getting signed in and life jacket was a breeze. The shuttle to the put-in outside of Miamiville for our "Fletcher" paddle was a quick ride, and our canoe, kayaks and paddles were waiting for us. A staff member was on hand at the river for those needing a push in, but otherwise it was easy to handle on our own. And we were off! There were little rapids on the way for some fun, a few "beaches" for taking a break. It was a Tuesday and we saw people paddling the whole way, but did not feel crowded at all. Saw lots fish, a few turtles and a turkey vulture. We did stop at Little Miami Brewing in Milford for a break which was fun. Return to the car was easy and again staff on hand to take your equipment. Great time and we'll definitely do it again!
