I love the free local arts and entertainment newspapers! Online on a daily basis but weekly in print, Westword has been going since 1977. This week's print issue seemed to be chock full of cannabis advertisements. It's rather popular in Colorado. The newspaper has a "medical marijuana" critic who reviews local dispensaries. The front page was "Eat Here" which is a collection of "The 100 restaurants we can't live without" and if I was spending any more time in Denver than just this one night, I would be bookmarking the bejeebers out of them. I paid for advertising in April for the month of 4/20, but my ads were not as agreed in contract! Some weeks they were too small, and the QR code was not scannable. Mostly marijuana ads with a few halfway-decent articles here and there. The staff is very unprofessional and rude.

The writers here have room for growth, yet the selection of alternative topics deserve praise. I would like to see more topics like increasing the regard for disproportionately affected demographics, like people of color, and their successes as well as injustices. Other topics like how people of color are less likely to hunt, fish, and recreate outdoors due to the oversaturating privilege that white culture spills on them would be great. Many children of color are afraid to explore outdoors, especially as novices, since white children will shame them for poor trail shoes and such. I work with children is this a remarkably common experience for them. This grows with them and, generally, you will see families of color participate as a group and learn together, due to their interest to explore and solidarity to reflect privileged judgments. As a person of color, I have seen many white hikers, anglers, and hunters size me up for what I was wearing. Just a thought! Keep it up, Westword! You guys make journalism feel authentic! read more

Love the Westword. Primarily I pick up the free newspaper for concert listings in Denver but there is much more to it than that. There is great information about upcoming events in the artistic community among other things, movie reviews, and articles about what is going on in the area that mainstream media wants to avoid and ignore. I particularly love the 'Ask a Mexican' column and his replies which are informative, funny and fondly snide. Some of those people are dumb and small minded and in turn get the answers that they deserve. Some people have called the Westword the Wasteword because it used to be such a huge newspaper, much of what people had no interest in...good thing they trimmed down. It is not so much fun having such a big wad of paper under your arm when you are walking around! read more

This used to be a great local indie paper. Knife edged music reviews, spot-on restaurant reviews, edgy commentary, funny-but-stab-you-in-the-gut-and-make-you-think-twice comedy. A little smidge of investigative reporting here, and little smear of civil disobedience there. I actually remember when the "Best Of" was relevant, and also sought after by local businesses. I think it was the last year that MTV still played music. I remember looking forward to reading several columns, written by sane, normal, interesting, relevant people who reflected the City of Denver. But the 90's weren't kind to Westword, and the 00's are worse. I looked through it today, and if you take out the MMJ and sex ads, you're left with about two single sheets of paper. What's left, writing-wise, is so ridiculous. Seems Westword's target demographic is drinking antifreeze out of a discarded shoe, after a romp in a dumpster being romanced with a tire iron, the coup de grace on a blurry stoned day being tied up and forced to eat Pho before heading off to the Lion's Den to hear some band that formed yesterday when the Meth ran out. Whomever they're writing to, isn't anyone I know. And whatever they're after doesn't even remotely mesh with reality in most of Denver's typical street/neighborhood/suburb/business/rec/family/friends/life. WTF? As for the "Best-Of"? This is not going to be taken well. But I have to say it. Best Of seems like a total f-ing scam. Case in Point: Go Fish Grille, now closed, won 2 Best Of Awards in 2005, and when I went there --just one week after the Best Of issue came out -- it was as if the blurbs had been written about some other restaurant! Whenever I pick up the Westword I flip through for my two most favorite things, my ridiculous horoscope and Savage Love. When I am done with that, I move to the backpage, where I am entertained by advertisements for massages and business opportunities... flip to some of the colorful classifieds and check out sexy Asian women and 12-year old girls offering massage classes. The job opportunities are usually service or rip-you-off scams, but sometimes I fall upon a good opportunity. Either that company had no idea where to advertise, or had enough money to advertise anywhere they wanted. I usually try to find the music listings, so I can see who I want to say I saw over the weekend, but I never use the table of contents, so it usually takes me a while to find the section... By then, I am tired and have to lay down for a nap. Wait, you mean to say there are articles? I agree with Vince, too long to keep my attention span, but I like the start of them! * Star one is for cheeky cover stories that make me pick up the weekly edition ** Affordable star two is for making the weekly free! *** Sexy star two is for all the sexy advertisements... Everyone should know about the pure wackiness of Westword. And it's my favorite price: FREE. It's a weekly alternative paper that highlights the best and worst (extra emphasis on the worst) of Denver. I like to read Savage Love out of interest, excitement, and disgust. Most of the time, I have to stop reading, and then peek at it a few minutes and think to myself, "Really? This is actually a problem for someone?" How else would I learn about things like bestiality, golden showers, and BDSM? Thanks Dan Savage, for informing me. You also have to check out "Ask a Mexican." In its own unusual way, I hope it's opening people's minds to diversity (or just give everyone a laugh, racists and non-racists alike). You might even learn some Spanish slang, which is helpful for Colorado. If you don't know what to do over the week, Westword will tell you about just about every venue in the Denver metro and Boulder area. Very helpful since you can just open it up and see what bars, clubs, or music venues are having great deals for that particular night. The classifieds are a fun thing to look out when you're out in a public place. You will get some weird looks as you peruse the "Adult section" (because really, who hasn't wanted a massage by an Asian transsexual with DD breasts?), the job section (because all my life, I've wanted to be either a phone actress, a restaurant hostess, or an exotic dancer. I hope Westword will give me my big shot), and the real estate (actually, pretty helpful if you're in the market for an apartment or house). Ok, first off you have to know, I work part time for The 'Word--what we employees like to call The Westword so we sound super cool--ya know, it's just how we do. But, I wouldn't work for The 'Word, if it wasn't one of the coolest, hippest, informative sources of what Denver's all about! Darn skippy. Yet, besides being a great source for what see and do in Denver, The 'Word also puts on some of their own great events through the year. Saturday, for example, was The Westword Music Showcase by the Denver Art Museum. $10 bucks for 10 venues and 60 bands with headliners Lucero and Dinosaur Jr. Plus, other local favorites like The Flobots (opening for The Fray this summer at Red Rocks) and Born in the Flood were all there! Basically, it's an excuse to drink a cold beer outside while enjoying the warm weather and listen to some great music :) Oh, and I forgot to mention, Adam Cayton Holland was there too! (Ah, super cute, that one). He writes the weekly "What's So Funny?" column in The 'Word. So, check it out! read more

Great paper. Great writers. And they throw cool parties. Only complaint: Cover stories are way, way too long. That said, they have quirky, high-quality stories you won't find in other publications (and actually want to read for that long!). Savage Love rules. True, I can't usually be bothered to go get the Westword to read it, so I get my weekly dose at http://www.thestranger.com , but the Westword remains consistently amusing and enlightening reading material for other reasons. Their regularly scheduled skewering of Tommy 'The Tank' Tancredo is worth of a standing ovation, and the events calendar will let you know about all sorts of hip events you never would otherwise have attended. Look ye not for objective news content here. There is approximately none whatsoever. The most news-like content is contained within the generally insightful profiles of notable locals featured as front page news in each issue. They have interviewed interesting characters such as the couple whose ad seeking models for fetish photography has run on the self same newspaper's back page for years, and the poor RTD employee whose sexual addiction made her an overnight internet celebrity of a rather unpleasant sort. The Best Of awards are fun, and the Ali Baba Grille has won its very fair share- but don't take them too seriously, since they gave a pizza joint that doesn't even specialize in vegetarian food Best Vegetarian Food last year. The fifth star is still sitting at the bus shelter wondering why they cut down on the pictures in the naughty classifieds. read more

It's shrinking ... shrinking ... shrinking. Westword is getting smaller and I'm not just talking page size. There are fewer articles, fewer reviews, fewer words ... Westword has really dropped in quality since its purchase by Village Voice Media. I still pick it up every week, but ... Most of the features writers are the cure for insomnia. Herrera has burnt out fast since his very promising start as the music editor. The loss of Heller to the Onion (where his talents are grossly misused as Denver/Boulder editor) has left Westword without a single readable music critic. Roberts is a blowhard. Cayton-Holland is hit or miss, although he is fucking hilarious when he hits. I always read Sheehan - I love his reviews. Westword has the most comprehensive guide of happenings around town each week that I've found. Most of it is online, so it's useless if you're already at the restaurant trying to decide what to do afterward. And the best of Denver oozes with pretension. I mean, Elway's? Seriously? For the 16yrs I have lived on the Front Range I have depended on the Westword to bring me the comics, articles, and letters that get to the underbelly of Denver. Sadly, the recent influx of grow shops/medical MJ have made the advertisements boring, and there are WAY more ads than there used to be. I still love the writing and the syndicated bits. I have been picking up Westword for the last couple weeks. it's freely offered-I love the feel of a magazine. I am not happy with internet sound bites. I want to sit in car when i have to wait for someone, put on my glasses and read, roll down the window and feel a small breeze. I want to take my time! I like Westword. It is definitely not mainstream. The first time I opened it the ads blew me away-i didn't know thre were so many places in Denver that sold pot. I also like the "Ask A Mexican" feature which gives me a chuckle. The whole magazine is interesting to look through. There always seems to be something a little...different than 2 minute soundbites or pompous news reporters.. .Something a little rebelious and bad. I hope it continues to be published and stays free. I just moved here from Cleveland not too long ago and I thought our local paper was crappy. Man has Westword proved me wrong, by comparison Scene magazine is Nobel prize winning literature. I give it points for compiling some useful info on music events and restaurants, however I take away points because after reading the articles I want to unlike them on Facebook and set aflame the newsstands where they give out the mags. I'm not asking for The New Yorker, but I would expect better quality writing than what I see out of most people's clickbait facebook posts. I guess you get what you pay for. read more

It's an entertainment newspaper to me. If you're looking for the latest news, don't pick this one up. The one thing the Westword excels at is its concert listings. I know, they're just advertisements but it seems every venue lists and ad, making this paper the one to pick up if you're looking for a show, or just to see who's in town. A year ago I would have given this 4 stars. I loved picking up a Westword and reading it on the light rail down to school. Now I pick up a Westword read the two short articles they have in there that cover 5 pages, read about the up coming concerts that cover 6 pages and them flip through the 200 pages of Medical Marijuana ads. I get it Medical Marijuana is for sale now. In my belief Westword has gone from being chocked full of info about Metro Denver events and articles to an article, some listings and a Medical Marijuana yellow pages. So if you want to read about Denver issues seek something else. BUT if you want to know where to can get Medical Marijuana from every part of the city. Pick one up today. GO right now. read more

Ok, I really like this publication and they always have very interesting articles or if you need to know what's going on, that is the first place I look. I have been checking them out online lately and there is a blog called Cafe Society that tells you everything you need to know about food. I did read a blog by Lori Midson that I thought was totally unprofessional and offensive however. It really took her credibilty away and showed that she didnt' think her post through very well.
