The Boston Bakery (for which I have no idea why it is named after a city in the States!), is quite unassuming and from the outside isn't very distinguishable from any other old school bakery. Except that first of all the family that run it are the loveliest people and if you're lucky their little super adorable daughter will run the EFTPOS machine for your purchase. They also cherish their regulars; for example my partner used to be a regular and then moved overseas for 3 years and they still remembered her after all that time! And then there's the pies, oh sweet sweet delicious heaven-sent morsels of delight! They have the standard fare which drive a hard bargain at $3.60, but then they also have 'fancy' pies for $4.20 which include rockstar gems like Steak, Mushroom, Bacon and Cheese, or Chicken, Camembert and Cranberry, or Steak and Kumara, or Butter Chicken and Broccoli. The actual place is only open to the public from Wednesday to Saturday but if you want you can order and pick up any day except for Sunday when closed. If you do walk in on the Wednesday to Saturday opening times they have a selection of tarts, cakes etc on display but it may not be too extensive as the owner told me they cater mostly for non public customers so do not get too carried away with baking too much for selling on site. Against one wall is an industrial grade coffee machine that pumps out the flat whites to have with your choice of bakery items. The counters are filled with cream buns, muffins, cakes and sandwiches which all looked delicious. The pie warmer was likewise well stocked with crispy flaky pastry pies. As for the breads, I could choose from a big range of loaves and buns. I think this is a great idea and a total time saver. In the time it took to get my coffee on the go I had ordered my bakery items and had a chance to chat to the salesperson. Hate to think of the logistics when things get busy and a long line of customers are waiting though, I assume they have that covered with plenty of staff behind the counter.
