They are up and running early, before the crack of dawn in fact, so all of their filled rolls are fresh as daily as are the sandwiches in the counter drawers. Pie connoisseurs won't be disappointed because there is a big range here and new is their vegetarian pie. They have really good bakery bread buns and the usual bread loaves. Sweet tooths will be well satisfied in this bakery because they have the brownies, the lamingtons, the cream cakes, my family were a little bit spoilt when I got home. Of the two bakeries, this is the better one (of the two proper bakeries. If you also fry chicken you're not a proper bakery). It's really nothing fancy, just your standard bakery fare. But the pies are yum and everything's fresh, and really you don't want anything other than standard bakery fare from a bakery. Nothing wrong with sticking to the classics when you're doing them well. Rather than being on Great North Road like most of the Avondale shops this place is just round the corner on Rosebank, which is good because it feels a bit quieter and less hectic to me. If I'm in Avondale and I want a good, cheap lunch this is where I go.

Against one wall is an industrial grade coffee machine that pumps out the flat whites to have with your choice of bakery items. The counters are filled with cream buns, muffins, cakes and sandwiches which all looked delicious. The pie warmer was likewise well stocked with crispy flaky pastry pies. As for the breads, I could choose from a big range of loaves and buns. I think this is a great idea and a total time saver. In the time it took to get my coffee on the go I had ordered my bakery items and had a chance to chat to the salesperson. Hate to think of the logistics when things get busy and a long line of customers are waiting though, I assume they have that covered with plenty of staff behind the counter.

I assumed this was a sort of halfway-house cafe, like the Lifewise cafe on K'Road. Whoops! Turns out this place is nothing of the sort. Fresh baking and cabinet food are boundless at Salvation Kitchen - these people sure know how to whip up delights. From calzones and pizzas to brioche and gateau, there's a lot on offer at this place and it's all completely scrumptious.
