The word "boot camp" usually brings up images of some burly guy in camouflage standing over you screaming and yelling while you try to press out yet another push up. At least this is what I thought when I considered attending a boot camp to get fit. Now, to be sure, there are a few boot camps in the L.A. area that have turned the military boot camp into a money generating model, dressing soft mooshy lawyers and desk workers in camouflage, issuing them dog tags, and charging them an arm-and-a-leg in exchange for verbal lashings and a lot of sweat. Not so with Adam's boot camp. While the Westside Adventure Boot Camp is tough and is sure to get you in shape, it also is a supportive, kind environment and, best of all, it's all women. Nothing against boys, but sometimes that testosterone can get mucho-competitive and may not be the most comfortable environment, especially if you haven't hit the gym in years.
Every weekday morning will find Adam up at the crack of dawn leading three classes of women through a warm up (consisting of a short jog and lots of mobility exercises designed to loosen you up and get your heart pumping) and then through a bunch of circuit training. M, W and F (at 5:30, 6:45 or 8:30 am) are considered "total body conditioning days". While you supply your mats and hand weights on those days, Adam will often bring various other toys like elastic resistance bands, cones (for obstacle courses), and ladders, and then lead everyone through several circuits, while carefully explaining all the exercises - in between the circuits you do a bunch of running as well. Tu and Th. are considered "cardio" days where you'll be using stairs, inclines, sand, etc., and traipsing all over Ocean Avenue between Montana and San Vicente, and down to the beach as well. The camp is super fast paced, but everyone works at their own speed and Adam gives encouraging words, as well as modifications to the exercises, if they are needed. He also pushes everyone like crazy - I think this workout is better than most workouts that I've had with personal trainers, plus, you are outside under the palm trees and at the beach, so if you have to work out, at least palm trees make it easier to go to that happy place in your mind, imagining being on the beach with a cocktail. Adam must have the most insane rolodex of workout routines in his head - I've never seen him repeat any workout twice, so at least it stays interesting and makes the time seem to go faster. Of course it would be cheaper to just go out and do it yourself, but I've finally gotten over the lies I tell myself - unless someone makes me show up and kicks my a&^ into gear, I would be snoozing, or at least sitting on my couch with a cup of joe and Good Morning America. So suck it up and sign up! You'll be glad you did - especially when the workout is over. And to be honest, I'm only giving it four stars because I hate getting up early. That makes no sense, but whatever. Deal with it! read more
