Cornwallis Park - Play structure in the shape of a train

Cornwallis Park

South End

Revamped playground. Nice new play structure in the shape of a train. My little guys really like…read moreit. It does say it's for kids 5 years old and up. However, my 3.5 years old has tons of fun on it too. I like the recycled tire flooring they use. Soft and shock absorbent for little feet and knees. It's located far away enough from the busy streets surrounding it so I don't have to worry about my kids running into traffic. My two "gripes": A. lack of seating. I think this was a design flaw or oversight. It does have a retaining wall that naturally calls people to sit. However, if you understand the way the play structure is designed, the slides come out the opposite side of where the retaining wall is. As a mom, I need to see, and my kids want me to see them slide down and cheer. I can't do that while sitting on the retaining wall. Bummer. Wish they could add a bench or two on the side where the slides are facing. B. the gravel plot right in front of it. It looks like it's under some kind of construction, at least I hope so. Tempting kids to throw rocks or wipe out on it while running around. Other than these two minor details, it's a good playground. I like the location too. When the kids get hungry and it's lunch time, we often go to Superstore and grab a bite.

Cornwallis Square has come a long way from the times my family would be staying at the Hotel across…read morethe street and I would watch strangely dressed ladies get in and out of cars. (Sample Conversation: "Mommy, she's getting in another one! Why does that lady have so many friends with cars? Where are they going!?") These conversations actually happened. Ask my mother. These days Cornwallis Square is not a hot spot for sad men, but rather a really nice green space in the downtown of Halifax. This is a great spot to go for a picnic when the weather gets warmer and offers enough space to toss a ball around all year round. The square features a really nice statue of Edward Cornwallis (Read a history book) as well as some odd modern art pieces. There is a small playground for children and benches for those just looking to read a book or have some lunch without the risk of grass stains. Overall I would say this is a nice little park to check out all year round, but especially on a sunny day in the summer. If you happen to see a lady getting in and out of a lot of cars, take the advice my mother gave me and do not approach.

Halifax Common - Pavilion All-ages music venue

North End

It seems peculiar to me to write a review about a vast, fairly empty piece of land. The Common is a…read morelarge chunk-o-field in the middle of the city, with a few baseball diamonds, a fountain, and some trees thrown in for good measure. Now that spring is showing its sunny little face around these parts, I feel compelled to run, skip and dance my way down to the field and play about until night fall. The Common is such a lovely plot of communal land for all to share and is especially wonderful for those of us who don't have back yards to play in. Yesterday morning, I enjoyed a brief yoga session with myself prior to work. Since I cross the land everyday I head downtown, I felt that not stopping yesterday when it was so epically beautiful out would have been a travesty. I love that this space is available to all who wish to use it. You don't need to ask anyone if you can do hand stands or throw a ball around, it's just there waiting for you to visit - no permission needed. In the summer, I walk a couple of blocks blanket in hand, and set up shop on the grass. With my notebook I could lay all day, writing and watching the people pass. On most days, you can find friendly dogs chasing sticks, and on some special afternoons you can watch kites tipping and dipping across the sky. Oh Common, thank you for being such a consistent sunny day companion.

As well the Commons has hosted a few concerts such as Kiss and this summer is the Black Eyed Peas. The Commons itself is a large grassy area that is cut with baseball diamonds on each corner and in the summer time are normally stocked with baseball teams having a blast. In the surrounding area there is a playground that houses alot of little creatures meaning kids running around on any given day. Great slides and monkey bars to swings and tunnels. As well it also has that spongy turf under it so when the kids falls from running they do not skin their knees. Right beside that is the Skateboard park that will always leave you gasping when they do their jumps and flips on the boards and bikes. All these areas seem to be growing in popularity. One suggestion that I would like to make to the city is to put in more benches so that the [parents can sit down.

Bedford

Smack on the Bedford Basin, this is great park for all seasons and ages. For families with kids,…read morethe highlight would be the large playground. It has a rubbery artifical surface which means it doesn't get muddy, and softens trips and falls. The worn-out previous wooden ship playstructure was replaced in Fall 2015. There is a bathroom which is clean, heated and open all year round. As a bonus for those in the diaper way it also has change tables- in both bathrooms. There are lots of benches around the playground so it is easy to sit and keep an eye on the kids. In the Summer, the park is close to cool breezes from the Basin. It is fun to spread out a blanket and watch the ships sailing in and out of Bedford yacht squadron. There is a brick walkway that goes along the waterfront that is great for casual strolls and running. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Narrows. It is kept clear in the Winter so you often see people pushing strollers and older people getting some fresh air.

There is basically nothing blocking your view in the park. Which I'm guessing is a plus when you bring kids to the park to play, a pano view of the surroundings. It's basically a big patch of grass between the ocean and the parking lot. Lots of benches, lots of fantastic views of the basin. It was winter when I stopped in to check this park out, but I think there is a paved path/boardwalk that goes pretty far. It's a great place to walk your dog (on leash) or go for a stroll if you're in Bedford and in the market for that kinda thing.
