The actual West Lakes shopping center is very good, however, the parking "facilities' leave a lot to be desired! Firstly, you have to enter the center through a boom gate, collect a parking "ticket" & then try & negotiate the sometimes obscure parking access lanes! Before the boom gates etc were installed it was relatively easy to access the center from many sides, & the parking bays were easily accessible, & "logically situated. However, with the advent of the boom gates, many of these access points have been closed or made "one-way", so making it sometimes frustrating to get to where you wish to park! The under-cover parks are all good, the upstairs ("old") parking area used to have "sails" shades for almost all the parks, now only a very limited number of parking spaces are covered. The center does advertise that one can park & shop for up to 3 hours without paying, however, to exit the center, you must use the boom gates & insert your ticket into the machines. I have personally observed many instances where either trying to enter or exit the center has been very poorly handled when the machines or the boom gates do not operate as they are supposed to! I was once on a bus, with another one in front of us, & many cars behind us, all waiting for the boom gates to operate! The buses & (I believe) trucks have a special exit/entry system wherby the drivers do not need to get a ticket--some form of built in identity system applies to them. The time when I was held up whilst the drivers had to stop their buses, exit them manually to activate the gates etc, with a line of other vehicles all waiting behind, was a disgrace! There was never any
"need' to "regulate parking"--as Westfield states, so why the necessity to (1), make ALL cars have to get a ticket to allow boom gates to open, then (2) if staying more than 3 hours, having to first pay the fine at a "pay station", then having to form a queue to get out by once gain placing your ticket into the machine to enable the boom gates to rise. Even if one stays for any time less than 3 hours, you still have to use your ticket to make the boom gates rise! The patronage at West Lakes & the nearby other businesses/services in this "block" has definitely suffered since these boom gate etc were installed (at great cost I would imagine!), which has a flow on effect of not having as many paying customers into the shops, resulting in many shops closing, & a number of vacancies in the center! Surely, in this day & age, not what is needed? read more
