** Stay away from Care One at the Highlands Edison NJ **…read more A Serious Warning About Care One at the Highlands Edison NJ * Deeply concerning care and judgment * Lack of accountability after a serious incident * Poor leadership, oversight, and communication * A disturbing lack of compassion and empathy My 20-year-old daughter was in recovery staying at Care One in Edison. She needed physical rehab and nursing care to get her strength back from an undiagnosed neurological disorder. She was in severe pain and not fully mobile. She was admitted on Friday May 1st. On Tuesday May 26th she was in her room and two of the Techs were going to clean her. My daughter indicated that she was in pain and did not want to be touched. One of the Techs held her down, while the other used forced to wash her. She told them repeatedly that she was in pain and one tech responded, "That's not my problem" they continued to hold her down and did not stop although she them to let go "I'm in pain". After the incident she called me, terribly upset at the force they used and how much pain she was in. I reported the incident immediately to the Director of Nursing and told her what happened and she tried to dismiss the incident and blame my daughter. This is not acceptable. No one should be subjecting a disabled patient in pain to this type of treatment. My daughter was immediately removed that day from Care One. There was no accountability for this abuse.

It wasn't ready and they made her wait nearly 2 hours for a pre-written form, which turned out to be useless anyway as it had the wrong dates on it. Unprofessional and entirely useless.

My problem was with some of the night staff that acted like they were doing me a favor. One night since my diaper was not soiled they didn't change it for the night. Another time I had diarrhea. There was an attitude and I pointed out that it was something I ate there. Another time someone came in with an attitude and instead of placing the hospital gown on me to be put on it was THROWN ON ME. Another time around 8:45 I requested change for the night and the person who came in was on the phone with a personal call and taking care of me was secondary. Some of the food was warm or cold at best. Something was called a cheese omelet but was horrible and cold so I couldn't even eat it. As for the office I got help a few times to appeal for a longer stay I felt I needed and they were very helpful. And they helped me with my discharge.

The building does need a complete plumbing and AC update. The maintenance staff does work very hard to keeps things operating properly. There are a few young ladies who work here making appointments and doing other paperwork for the patients. I will not mention any names but we all know who they are and I have to say Thank You to to them for their help and pleasant attitude. Sometimes I drive them crazy but they are very understanding and accommodating. The facilities social worker is very pleasant and helpful. There are minor (and sometimes) major operational problems with the facilities three Hoya Lifts. My room, the hallways and common areas are cleaned everyday of the week (not that they need It). In other reviews, some stated, upon entering the building, there was a strong odor of urine. I have been here for some time and I have never experienced that. There are everyday activities to keep the residents occupied and stimulated. The food is not 5 stars but it is fairly good for nursing home standards with a few outstanding dishes. There is a problem with some of the kitchen staff not being able to read and understand what you ordered due to the language barrier (or they just don't care). The kitchen director is constantly trying to correct the problem. However, as of this writing, the problem continues almost every day, three meals a day. I hope that he fixes it because at times, it can be very, very frustrating. Going on six months and NOTHING has been corrected. You would think that after six months, the problems would be corrected but not this place. Some will think that I'm a racist and I don't really care because everybody that knows me, knows differently. Everybody is entitled to work, however you should be able to communicate in the language of the country where you reside and are employed, no exceptions. Dock them an hour's wage for each mistake and in a few days, they'll be speaking perfect English:) As far as the nurses and nurses aides are concerned, its the same no matter where you go. Some are pleasant and like doing their job and others are very lazy and just plain miserable and unfriendly. There are some that would expend more energy trying to get out of doing their job properly than doing it right in the first place. I am not going to mention any names but I think that those not so nice and unfriendly people know who they are. However, to the pleasant and helpful staff (which there are quite a few and I won't mention their names), I have to say Thank You for making my stay a little more bearable, you were very kind to me. What drives me crazy is how some of the nurses are not fully prepared when it comes to providing such items as wound dressings, colostomy supplies, etc..... When one nurse gathers supplies for a patient, the others act like squirrels stealing the stored supplies for their patient's use. Example: I needed a wound to be dressed which should normally take no more than ten minutes. An hour later, the nurse returned because she had to search two other floors for the proper dressing which is extremely inefficient, time consuming and not very helpful for the patient. As I leave, I am giving this facility a 2.5 star rating and I hope that the owners and staff read it and make the necessary corrections and improvements because when you're recovering from an illness, the patient does not want to tolerate all of these petty, easily fixed problems. Also the room was not cleaned often enough with soiled tissues and other items used for patient care on the floor from one day to the next. As well as having a floor fan blowing onto the patient because it was so HOT in the room...this was in April when the temperature should have been better controlled. We would never recommend this nursing home.

We had hoped that the stay there would help him to become more ambulatory with PT. From the moment we arrived, we realized it was a mistake to have chosen the facility. The night staff left him sitting on his bed immediately upon checking in while we waited for someone to come with medication. It was like he was forgotten about as soon as he arrived. The room was dirty, the following day I had to report the bugs seen in the room. His roommate clogged the toilet so it was unusable. And staff told my father they could not clean it so he was left without a bathroom until the following day. My dad was a fall risk and no one came to help him go to the bathroom even when he rang for assistance. He fell one day while I was at work and he had to scream for help and laid there while no one came. One of the biggest issues was with medication---his blood thinners were not being administered consistently. We were told the pharmacy was out of them. He ended up with clots in both legs that put him back in the hospital (eventually had strokes as well). They also did not carefully monitor his blood sugar and I found him to have extremely high blood sugar more than once. The nurse assigned to him acted like I was an inconvenience for asking for help and I had to call his doctor repeatedly to get anything done within the facility with his medication. I could also hear staff yelling at some of the patients with obvious memory issues and it appeared that many of the patients are ignored. My dad ended up in the hospital and we never returned to Care One. We chose home hospice at the end of his life which was a much better care setting for him and our family. One of my biggest regrets was ever allowing him to be admitted to this facility while he was ill. It was a place of nightmares and if you have a family member there I recommend staying with them as much as possible so you can advocate on their behalf. Even better, don't take your loved ones here. The people who own this facility should be ashamed of themselves.

My nurses who cared for me most everyday was Lio Delgadi on the day shift Sheila Lucien in the evening. They were the most attentive and truly caring nurses I could ask for. I also must mention the Director of Nursing Regine Louisne. She made sure I had everything I needed to get well ASAP. The rest of the staff was great, the Physical Therapy staff was on point daily, and although I didn't think I needed it, I found that after being laid up a total of 5 weeks including my hospital stay prior, it made a noticable difference in my strength and energy. The food was good and available more often than I would normally eat at home... so I gained a few extra pounds.
