Well, I had held on to mine for several years, hoping that the hazardous waste folks would change their minds, to no avail. Then a postcard arrived from our trash company, CR&R listing nine hazardous waste drop offs, with MDS being the only one to accept smoke alarms. I did a Google map and headed on down. The receptionist was friendly and helpful and took those old alarms right away. Kudos to MDS for being willing to accept these items, especially since MDS is a commercial recycler. Their willingness to deal with Joe Public Small Fry is appreciated. And did I mention there was no charge?

I then call the main off where I was put on hold for 14 minutes before I was transferred to another person and I was put in hold for another 10 mons and when I was finally transferred to the person in charge, she cut me off mid sentences, asked me to shut up and let her speak. And continued with " how would you like me to fix the issue " I do not work at this company. How would i know how to solve the issue when. I volunteered to get my mom's old PC tower hard drive crushed so that there would be no chance of…read moreher information being stolen off of it. BB also had some papers/documents she wanted shredded. We came here on a weekend, and found a spot in the lot (in front of a very old non-operational car). The streets were lined up with cars so it seems like it would be challenging to find a street parking spot. A car was actually waiting for us to leave because there was no other parking. Anyway, when I walked towards the back of the lot where the business is located, a friendly young man approached us with a big smile and asked how he could be of service. We told him we needed the hard drive physically destroyed, the rest of the PC tower recycled, and the documents/papers shredded. He brought out a hydraulic press type of equipment and crushed the hard drive in front of us. He also took the PC tower and placed it with a bunch of other electronic equipment which was slated to be recycled. Finally he took the documents and placed them into a locking trash type container. BB wanted to witness the document destruction but he stated that they don't offer that service. From seeing the whole operation, I felt confident that the documents would be secure until shredding (he stated it happens once weekly). The total cost for this was a meager 15 dollars. We paid and were on our way. Will definitely be back if we need to recycle electronics in the future!

The owner and the employees are extremely helpful and polite...they're just good people. I've been recycling with them for the last few years, and recently, I contacted them to see if they would let me bring a bunch of kindergarteners for a tour to learn about recycling. Not only did they say yes, but they stayed after closing and allowed us to tour their facility after hours! The showed us their entire operation and even showed us how they crush and bale the aluminum cans so they can be transported for the next step in the recycling process. I can't brag them up enough. After learning this, the first thought that came to my mind was 'This is a huge number! How much actually is this?' Consider this: This is more weight than the weight of the Eiffel Tower (Paris), Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco), Brooklyn Bridge (New York), Empire State Building (New York), Statue of Liberty (New York), Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), Great Pyramid of Giza (Egypt), Burj Khalifa (Dubai), Space Needle (Seattle), Tokyo Skytree (Japan), The Pentagon (Virginia), and the Great Wall of China, ALL COMBINED, TIMES SEVEN! That's A LOT of plastic! Worse yet, we produce this amount of plastic EVERY year, and studies predict that it takes approximately 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose in a landfill. That means that the plastic bottle that you throw in the trash will still be there for approximately 18 generations of your descendants after you. If you don't recycle, you are literally trashing our planet for your own offspring! And, Earth is the only planet that we know of that is capable of supporting life. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now. Aside from trying to be a good citizen of planet Earth, I also recycle because I could always use some extra cash. I can usually pocket around $20 for every visit I make here, which really helps because I am certainly not a rich man. This particular location is a great option for recycling, here at "Benites Recycling," located just behind Bob's Market (Lancaster, California). I've been to this location several times. The money you receive by recycling here is similar to what you will receive at other nearby recycling centers. There are three things I like about this location in particular, as follows: (1) they typically do not require you to show your I.D. like they do at some other locations; (2) they use lightweight recycling bins, so they can quickly obtain an accurate weight of your recycling without having to tare the weight of the bins; and (3) the wait here is usually minimal because there are usually less people here than at some of the other recycling centers I have gone to. Although I believe the folks here are honest, the only thing I don't like about this location is how the actual recycling weight is difficult for the customer to see unless the customer walks around the scale and stands next to the employee reading the weight. Aside from this one drawback, I do like coming here for the reasons mentioned above. I'll definitely return to this location in the future. If you don't recycle here, please recycle somewhere.

There are many recycling centers in West LA, but most of them only take metal cans. If you have…read morelarger and heavier, metal items, it can be difficult to find a place to recycle them. I had an old Sears sewing machine that weighs a ton - likely because it was built like a tank, all metal and with heavy metal parts! It's hard to find a place within 10 miles that would take it! I found Jake's number on yelp and I called around 7:30 one evening, and to my surprise, he personally answered the phone! How rare is that these days! I arranged a time with him, and dropped off several heavy metal items. It was easy. He also took a lot of E waste items, such as power bars, extension, cords, etc., etc. He operates out of his residence, and the location in Westchester is very convenient for people who live on the west side. Compared to the large metal recycling facilities, where you may have to drive through piles of trash or meander through a wasteland, I feel his location is easier and safer for me! I'm very happy to have found his service, and I would definitely recommended to people on the west side.
