This is a multigenerational family business that specializes in well curated antique coins, swords,…read moreknives, opera glasses, and other collectibles. This is higher end "stuff" that's priced accordingly. I came here twice during our recent trip to NOLA, and each time I was reminded of a piece of advice from my Dad: If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it. Observations 1. Prime Royal Street location. 2. The store displays and the somewhat cluttered back office could be considered antiques in themselves. Or in other words, functional but a little frayed at the edges. 3. The young family member minding the counter was informative, reserved, and watching everything. The few questions I asked were answered well, but without much elaboration. I felt a little embarrassed asking for a price (like a old blood letting knife @~$5000), but I got over it. 4. I ended up buying an antique key at $75 and had the pleasure of witnessing a sale the old fashioned way. An older (and well dressed) family member comes out of the back office, greets me professionally, looks the item over, writes a paper receipt, accepts payment, puts my little treasure in a company envelope, and thanks me for the business. 5. James H Cohen & Sons has a website, but it doesn't come close to covering what you'll find in the store. I did also wonder how often it's updated. I'd love to come back again, if I'm in town again as I love exploring this kind of merchandise, whether I can afford it or not. In the meantime, I'll work in some website views.

Everything is really legit and if you've got a couple thousand dollars you can get yourself a really cool collectible piece. The staff were so, although we didn't purchase anything they were available to answer any questions. They also sell old money, so if you're interested in other kinds of collectibles, there's a couple interesting memorabilia in here up for sale.

Harrison Canal - Bass caught on popper fly in city park

    Harrison Canal

This is an excellent little spot in the park to fish. Coming from mid city down Carrollton/Wisner…read moreand turning left onto Harrison into city park, this fishery is easily accessible and offers parking right on the side of the road basically anywhere you see fit. I always park on the left side of Harrison right after the fist bridge and walk along the canal back towards midcity. As an avid fly fisher, I've fished a lot of spots along this canal with many different flies. Right off the road I've pulled in nice bluegill on small top water flies. About 50 yards down from the road is a footbridge that crosses the canal. The bluegill and rio grande cichlids are abundant right here, and I've also caught a few nice bass (and have seen even bigger bass) from this footbridge. About 75 yards down from this bridge is another footbridge. Walking down the left side of the canal (the wisner side) there are some very nice spots to cast under an old oak tree that stretches out over the canal. Bluegill and bass abound here. From atop the second footbridge here you have access to one of the most abundant rio grande holes in the park. I've seen many rios in this location every single time I've been here. Use an olive or brown wooly bugger (non bead head) to hook into a fish you won't forget catching! Farther down from this area the spots are few and far between. Most of the bank in this area is overgrown and extremely hard to cast from. If you're lucky enough to have a kayak, you can paddle down past the second footbridge and reach some really productive waters. It's not uncommon to catch 5lb+ largemouth bass if you can get to an area you can fish. Almost all the rios in this area break 1lb, as well. This canal is also home to spotter gar, blue catfish, black crappie (sac-a-lait), red ear sunfish, and red spotted sunfish. No extra size or bag limits other than the statewide size and bag limits apply. Keep in mind that Rio Grande Cichlids are an invasive species and it is encouraged you keep any that you catch. They are extremely tasty, though, so this isn't really a bad thing. Keep in mind that I wrote this review from a strictly fly fishing based point of view. It's really the only experience I have fishing this part of city park. All these waters are much more accessible if fished with bait and tackle rods. I've personally caught and identified all species I've mentioned in this review in the 200 yard or so stretch of canal reaching towards midcity from Harrison. I hope you all catch a lunker!

You have to register through Academy with "ID Me" to obtain a discount. I have an ID Me account that I had to ser up through the VA, but that account does not work at Academy for some reason. When I tried to register through the QR code displayed at the register, the website told me that they could not verify me and that I did not have an account. The cashier here just told me that allot of veterans are not getting their discount because of this, but it is now Academy's policy to verify through the website. They just lost my business.

If my memory serves me correctly I was at cashier number three. I went to check out. As I approached the cashier. She was laughing with her colleague next to her. Once I got to the counter I gave her a minute to gather herself. She scanned my item but continued to laugh. I had to ask her to please finish checking me out and i had to ask her what is my total. She said the total but I did not hear her since I am hard of hearing. I have a hearing disability. Therefore I had to ask her again. She became irate that I asked her again and said I told you it was 21.83. I gave her my money and told her she did not have to be rude and ugly to me. She put the money on the counter and stormed off. Another person had to finish the sale. I am completely disturb that the cashier went off on me. I was polite and tried to give her a minute to gather herself. I also was treated poorly by the changing room attendant. After trying on a pair of pants, I put them on the table like I was suppose to do. She asked very ugly "What you don't want these." She made me feel like I did something wrong.
