I feel like west elm had a moment right around 2015, they were still new-ish, and really the at the height of every millennials dream board for home decor. Nowadays while I'm not sure they still have that je ne sais quoi about them, they are definitely still a nice place to shop for home products if you don't mind spending a bit. Something I like about west elm is that while they are pricey they aren't the most expensive. They tend to strike a chord between fancy and attainable, which is nice for a ton of people that want something decent in their house but don't want to spend a fortune. All of that being said, it's not cheap to shop here and when I come to this in person store it's mostly for browsing and to see if they have any random deals in the clearance area (they rarely do!). This location is clean and has plenty to take in. They used to have a local maker section that I didn't see this past visit, but that could just be user error. At any rate, this is usually a stop for me while I'm on the plaza. I just can't resist a good home decor shop! read more

Recently we visited the store. We were looking for a new sofa. The store was empty. There were several sales people in the showroom. We were completely ignored. I was truly baffled. However, I recently bought a new house and furnished it 100% with West Elm and the experience was a nightmare. - they lied about availability and estimated delivery dates (we got our final round of furniture 3 months late) - the in store manager was mostly unresponsive. When we got her supervisor involved, she became obstinate and passive aggressive - the customer service number was an endless, useless time suck If you have no time pressure on delivery, I would recommend the furniture. However, if you have any time requirements, it is likely not worth the stress and you can emulate the designs on Wayfair. read more

Once again, I am getting dissatisfied with the quality of furniture at these high end retailers! What is happening?!? I can see why all these stores are closing and going on line! They don't want you to see that their quality is declining year after year. The bedroom furniture is about on the same level of World Market, okay, but not great. West Elm used to be better. I wasn't impressed with some of the items quality. Also things were marked in stock, and were not in stock. A big sign said "take me home today"! In stock! I asked if I could get one of the metal drink tables with the sign, and the lady said sorry, not in stock. I pointed to another one with the same sign, and nope not that one either! I told her, "tell your manager to take down the signs then"! She looked confused and annoyed. My wife has a homing device imbedded in her that absolutely lures her into West Elm every time we're near. By default, I've made my way in here and have to say it's pretty nice! In the IKEA/Target era where it's easy to furnish on the cheap, West Elm takes a different approach of pure quality, modern aesthetics and a price tag to match. It's not a cheap store by any stretch, and I think they like it that way. The kind of furniture or decor here is going to be built to last, and almost everything in the store is eye catching. I also like that they're involved with the local community. We've bought from local artists showcasing illustrations here, and are planning to come in for a pet & family photo shoot with donations benefiting a local animal shelter. They are dog friendly and as we were traveling through town with our dog it made our mini vacation delightful to have him along with us to do every day things like shop and dine in KC. They have the show room set up really nicely, and we were able to find quite a few things in the store to take home with us. Staff kept checking on us to make sure we were doing OK and I saw them cleaning and disinfecting things that customers had touched in a timely manner. Great experience. read more

Unfortunately, we had a disappointing shopping experience on this very frigid day. It is not reflective of the West Elm, Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn Company at large. My son and I purchased several items. Upon a return to our vehicle, we looked at the receipt and noticed that we were overcharged for an item and mislead on a sale item. We took pictures of the items tags and walked back to the store. Note: We are in the midst of temperatures with wind chills below zero, so this was quite a feat to have to return to the store for their mistake. Upon our return, we notified them of the mistake on the overcharged item. They did not offer an amends or apology for the great inconvenience this cost us. She simply words a refund for the wrong price. Secondly, we kindly notified them of not receiving sale price of an item we chose from a sale table. The manager informed us that it was only for a select items on the top shelf. To the average customer, this was not clear. Again, she did not offer an apology for the misleading information nor gave an acknowledgement of the extra effort it caused us. In fact, it forced my son to once again return to the car in frigid sibzero wind chill weather to retrieve the item because we needed to return it. We cordially went through the process of returning and correcting the price without amends or the kind of customer service one would expect from a reputable company. Hapless. We left bewildered that we, as the customer, actually had to experience this disregard for the customer. I recommend you spend your decor dollars elsewhere. read more

We entered the West Elm and were initially approached by Zahaira, who was very helpful. She printed info for us, gave us swatches, offered to show us a video of her favorite couch, was patient and attentive and did not pressure us. Our sofa sectional requirements are specific since both my hubby and are not tall people (I'm 5' 3") so the seat depth absolutely had to be comfortable for both of us. The majority of sofas we've shopped are way too deep and won't support our backs properly. She pointed out a couple couches that we really liked, then when I asked her if there was anything else she thought we should take a look at, she raved about the Tillary. To be perfectly candid, I had dismissed this piece since it appeared too low at first glance. However, once I was introduced to it, I simply fell in love with the versatility of this 8 piece sectional. It was beautiful, comfortable, functional, easy to move around and separate, could turn into a guest bed, and the back cushions can be moved forward to decrease the seat depth to fit me!!! (Say WHAT?!?!?) (Our guests were always comfortable, but WE weren't and it is foolish to make that choice again.) We went back three times to check it out after shopping around (we lounged on the floor model for a LONG time) and after comparing, nothing came close to the package offering of the Tillary Modular. So we went back to seal the deal just before the store's sofa sale ended. Krista & Michael helped us finish the purchase and and were also very gracious. Since we stacked the available discounts: store's sofa sale (15% off) plus the moving discount (15% off) and opened a West Elm credit line (same as cash for 12 months option) our irritation with the steep 10% shipping fees was soothed. WE JUST WANT SOFA LEGS! I ordered furniture from the West Elm KC Plaza store on 3/3/2020 prior to all of this coronavirus shutdown. I was told to please order from store instead of online due to the fact that "my customer service would be better" if I had a store to take care of my issues. My furniture delivered finally 5/12/2020 and the custom sofa I ordered delivered with 1 inch stub legs instead of the pecan higher legs. My husband is 6'3", so you can imagine it is like sitting on the ground. The delivery men were SO nice, and had me leave a comment that it was incorrect, and instantly called customer service. The only reason I give this store even 1 star is because of how delightful the delivery men were. I also called the store to let them know of the incorrect item and they also said they'd handle it and to leave the furniture at my house. I've been told countless times by the managers at the KC Plaza store that there are two teams working on it, and that they'll call me as soon as they have updates. Not once did a manager call me first, I've had to hound them over and over to please escalate this issue or to just give me legs from a sofa in their store. The lack of concern for the incorrect delivery is shocking to me. Joseph specifically said to me "are you aware that there's a global pandemic", "at least my sofa is structurally sound", and that they are "at a loss for words of what to tell me." He was SO blatantly rude and I couldn't believe that is how he spoke to a CUSTOMER of the store. I am so frustrated at how this whole situation has been handled. I've been told the legs would be overnighted, then I was told the legs would arrive in 7-10 days, then it was "we hope to hear that they've shipped after the holiday weekend", and now it's "we have no update!" I'm the customer that spent $2500 on new furniture and the company already has my money and has no urgency to fix THEIR problem, not mine. I waited 2 months for the furniture to deliver, and I've already waited 16 days for this to STILL be an unresolved issue. I will never purchase an item from this store ever again. Fun place to stop by while on the Plaza. Great selection of many unique items. Always interesting to see what their interpretation to what is "in style" is. Very over priced...clearance is the only way to buy in this store. We've purchased one bedroom set from them recently. Don't get me wrong, it is gorgeous but lawd have mercy the damn bed is so heavy it is impossible for two grown men to move it. Our flooring guys were ready to murder us after moving the bed and dresser. Quality- probably...but no headboard or footboard should weigh that much! If you want to be talked down to by middle management and not be allowed to purchase items featured in the store then the west elm on the country club plaza is the place for you. One star is one too many. I was directed to this location while looking online before actually making the intended purchase in store. The store had this product on the sales floor. The computer inventory noted 3 in stock. At this point , one might foolishly think they could pay for this item and leave with it. One would be wrong. Did you know that west elm middle management can just declare an item "display only" and refuse to sell it to you? True story. Come to discover these recently established "displays" were "just set for a corporate visit next week" so I was not allowed to go home with one. Incidentally, the item I wanted to purchase was a planter pot...not a large piece of furniture ...not a custom piece...a planter (because one usually needs to see a pot in a "showroom" before committing to the purchase!?) This can only lead me to conclude that the optics for a corporate visit supersedes a paying customer. I was directed to go back home and order the item online forcing me to incur shipping charges. To be clear, I was in store. I was ready to purchase. I was shocked to find the middle management approach of selective service and terrible customer service to be sanctioned by their corporate office. I now know this because I called the customer service line and apparently they can just deny you product if they want to declare it display only. Online indicated it was in store to sell, as did another in-store associate (who was legit wonderful and helpful) but evidently Joseph can look at you and make a different call. Does this seem right at any level?! This product apparently only exists to put on a good show for corporate visits while actively sending customers away. When I tried to address this issue with Joseph he refused "to discuss it further". He wouldn't even offer to have it shipped to store at no charge but did let me know shipping would only cost me $18. As I stood a foot away from this look-but-don't-touch planter in a perfectly set display, he embodied sales prevention. I am shocked he has been employed at this location for any length of time let alone the years I have seen him there with his consistently apathetic approach toward pesky and dispensable customers. I am truly astonished and disheartened that the behavior of this individual is acceptable, encouraged, and allows for him to be in position of power / authority for others to learn from. I am not so naive to believe that my refusal to support such an establishment and company will negatively impact west elm, whose business model clearly does not value a paying customer, but the bar simply cannot and should not be this low. I've perused the West Elm catalog many times and I've heard nothing but great things about this place--especially in terms of value for your dollar on furniture items. With my recent move and an extra 15% off from West Elm courtesy of the USPS, I thought, why not make this my first stop in my quest for the perfect dining table? I cam here to the Plaza location on a Saturday afternoon. The place wasn't very busy--which I found strange, but maybe a good sign: I could use it to my advantage to get quality customer service without any issues. But I was quite wrong. I found the perfect table and four chairs that I wanted to purchase, but it took me quite a bit of time to flag down a sales representative. I figured there'd be one that over-looked the entire dining section, but that wasn't the case. Sales reps seem to work the checkout counter in addition to the sales floor, making it a bit more difficult to find someone to help you...even during a non-busy day. The individual who helped me didn't offer any opinions or advice on the table, nor engage in typical kind & friendly banter people in sales typically engage in. She walked up to me and asked "you want that table? You ready?" as if she had somewhere better to be. After spending a few minutes checking inventory for the items, she said that they didn't have any in the back but that it "shouldn't be an issue. We can get them ordered for you." I followed her to her desk/computer and she proceeded to do the checkout process on the computer. She looked up the items on the public West Elm site, added them to the cart, then asked for my credit card and shipping information. WHAT??? Is this not the same thing I could've done at home, by myself? Additionally, there were charges on the checkout page that she didn't bother to cover or explain. There was $70 for shipping directly to home, which is fine, but there was a $150 NON-NEGOTIABLE fee for having the delivery people build the table for me. I understand there's company policy with this stuff, but 1) you didn't have the item in stock, 2) you're forcing me to pay an extra $220 for home delivery? and 3) I can't even negotiate to remove a $150 charge for a "building fee" for items a 12-year old kid could build? She never once offered to get it shipped to the store, which I would've kindly waited for and picked up in my own truck once it arrived. When I asked her about it, she said "Oh, that's a different warehouse that ships here." I had to ask her to check the stock for that, and then said it wouldn't get delivered to the store until January. Frustrated with their lack of flexibility, I told her no thanks, and left the store. My review is not a complete reflection of this particular location- rather, a reflection of West Elm itself. For a "quality" furniture store, I expected much better customer service, at the very least. The lack of flexibility with getting items I wanted AT THE PRICE ADVERTISED--not having them in stock, not selling me the floor model, forcing me to pay an extra $150 without an option to remove, etc.--added insult to injury. Although I typically give retailers the benefit of the doubt for bad first experiences, West Elm won't be getting a second chance from me, knowing their horrible policies and even worse customer service levels. I was excited when WestElm first moved into KC, and was disappointed when they suddenly turned around and skipped town with almost no notice. Kicking me back to the curb leaving us to an on-line only relationship. So was thrilled when they mended the error of their ways and were not only returning, but were going to be MUCH closer to me than before. If you are not familiar with them think Crate and Barrel but with more of a focus on trendy contemporary design. Their prices tend to be a tad higher, but for VERY good reason. Their products tend to MUCH higher quality. The designs are starting to lean a tad to hipsterish to me, but that is likely because I am becoming a old fart and am no longer their exact target demographic. Stop by and take a look around. I find it ironic there's a review of this store that says the manager Christine will make sure your "pleased with your purchase years later" since I can attest that this is not the case with this location. I am not a fan of writing negative reviews, but the experience I had at this West Elm location could not have been more frustrating. This is the closest West Elm location to me at 3 hours away. I purchased 3 packs of drape sets online (over $400) that ended up being too bulky upon opening. I held onto them thinking they would grow on me, since I purchased them over a sale and knew I would not get the promotion again if I returned. I ended up deciding they weren't what I was looking for- missing the return window. A few months ago I was in KC and stopped by this store to shop. While there, I mentioned to a male sales clerk that I had drapes at home that I had purchased from West Elm but never used and that I was "just curious" if it would be possible to still return them as they were very expensive- he HAPPILY flat out told me to bring them back next time I came into town and that they would give me a merchandise store credit. He said it did not matter that it was over a year, as long as they were items that they still carried, I could bring them back for store credit. Well... I traveled back yesterday just for this... only to have the system "freeze up" for 25 minutes so they could not complete the return. The sales clerk said the system wasn't working for her and took my information. She had me leave my drapes there and said that the manager would call me in the morning with my merchandise credit number. The drapes were clearly still packaged as I had received them and only 1 out of the 6 drapes had even been removed from their packaging. I even brought them back in the same box they were originally shipped to me in- clearly showing that they have not been touched. 20 minutes into my long drive back home the Assistant Manager calls me to tell me she won't accept the return because of the timeframe and is shipping them back to me "free of charge" as if she was doing me a favor. But didn't address the fact that I drove 3 hours there and had to now drive 3 hours back home for absolutely nothing. She made no effort to make the situation right even though her sales clerk was the one who TOLD ME to bring them back to their store and initiated the situation in the first place. During our phone conversation, she was extremely defensive as if I was in the wrong... not at all accepting the fact that her employee was the one who provided this return policy to me, which she was now rejecting. She had no sympathy for the fact that I spent 6 hours driving for this. ALL because of what her employee informed me. I find it sad that after ALL of this she refused to make it right and proved that their store does not follow good customer service practices. I understand if this is not your policy, however your sales clerk unfortunately informed me otherwise and a customer drove 6 hours for this mistake that you wouldn't make right. If you have something negative to say about the store - I highly recommend you go visit one of the west elm stores in New York City or Los Angeles and then rethink your negative review. If I could give West Elm a 0 I would. Received a West Elm comforter as a gift. After 9 months needed to be dry cleaned which is the ONLY acceptable way to clean it via the tag. Took to Tide cleaners and they did their gentle comforter cleaning process. Results 4 shredded tears all along manufacture seams. We phoned to ask for a return on warranty basis and they said no, only a 30 day warranty. DON'T waste your money with West Elm. read more

I am an interior designer who ordered the Andes Loveseat and 2 Chairs for a client in June 2020. I was originally told the furniture would come in 6-8 weeks, and was called at 6 weeks and told my item was in route -- and would be arriving in 2 weeks. But, it never showed and no one called to update me. I called customer service after it did not show, and told it was not even built yet, so it would be another 10 weeks. My customer and I were patient and agreed to the extended wait. After 19 weeks the pieces were delivered with glue/oil stains in four noticeable places on the loveseat. I called customer service and was told they would replace the loveseat in another 8-10 weeks and they even gave me an exact date. I followed up with my client and we were willing to be patient- again. Then I received an email from Sutter Street Care, (the customer service group for West Elm, Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn) saying that they needed photographs to "make a decision" whether they would replace the loveseat. I submitted pictures that clearly show the four stained areas, and no one ever got back to me. That is the last I heard from them. I have called over ten times and given the run around, hung up on, transferred around, and told someone higher up would call me back, but no one ever does. Finally someone told me that the replacement was cancelled. No one told me this, and my client thinks a non stained replacement piece is on it's way. I am very frustrated with the fact that this company will deliver a brand new stained product and then won't stand behind their products. I understand that the 23+ week delay may be due to Covid issues this year, and my client and I can be understanding about that delay, but I would hope that a big company like this would not deliver a stained piece of furniture and refuse to replace it- or communicate with either of us. Please be warned before buying from them! I won't ever buy at any of these brands again for my clients. read more

Went into the store on October 22nd and purchased a sectional couch, table, and rug. Was told the couch would be delivered in 2-4 weeks, and that we would get everything at once. Received a notification that everything was available, and would be delivered on November 8th. Therefore, we sold all of our living room furniture that weekend to make room for our new stuff. Delivery people showed up on the 8th...table, and rug, but no couch. Called West Elm...they confirmed this was their mix up, and the couch hadn't even been built yet. They said they would put a rush request in, and that I'd get an email with a new delivery date. (Mind you, I have no living room furniture at this point.) Sure enough, I get an email. The new delivery date is now a month LATER...December 27th. Not OK. So I called again, (was disconnected 3 times, and spent over 2 hours getting in touch with someone) and they told me they'd let me out of my order because this was their fault. However, they told me they couldn't give me a cancellation number or send me an email to show that they had cancelled the order. I was supposed to just "trust them" that it was cancelled. That was on November 11th. Yesterday (December 8th) I received an email that my new delivery date was January 15th. So I had to call them back again (this time was disconnected 4 times, and spent almost 3 hours getting to the right person), because the order was supposedly cancelled. After being very nice with the people I was talking to today, even after the 3rd disconnection when they attempted to transfer me, I got a VERY rude woman. As you can imagine, after 2+hours, and still no answer or resolution, I was irritated by the time she got me. I first asked her to take down my phone number and to call me back if I got disconnected again...she didn't like that. She said she'd like to figure out what my problem was first. When I insisted she take number down before we went further, because I had already been disconnected so many times, she then told me I was hung up on because I yell at people (and I wasn't even yelling at her! I was irritated, but certainly not yelling. Even though I had every right to!) Finally I get her to take down my number, and tell her my situation. She tells me that everything is fine, and I don't need to worry. That they can't cancel the order yet. I tried to explain to her that I want something in writing, to confirm that I have cancelled this order, and am no longer responsible for purchasing this $3,000 couch. She starts arguing with me that I don't need it, and should trust them, that this is how their process works. I did not accept that, and said I wanted something in writing to show that I was being allowed to cancel this order. She puts me on hold again. After another 30 minutes waiting, she cam e back and told me I'd get an email in 24 hours saying it's cancelled. She asked if she could do anything else to help. I told her she could start with having a little compassion for people who are frustrated with dealing with West Elm...and she then went off and started screaming at me and hung up on me. Way to go West Elm. Stay classy. Save yourself the headache...and DO NOT SHOP THERE. read more

I have had very bad luck with West Elm furniture in the past, but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. Our bed from West Elm fell apart almost immediately. The dresser purchased from West Elm is unusable after 2 years. And most recently, I've had a horrible customer service experience regarding a coffee table. I ordered a coffee table on March 29th from West Elm online. It said it would take 4-6 weeks to arrive, so I was pleasant surprised when a delivery was scheduled on April 25th. I was called the day before and given a 2 hour window for delivery. After waiting on Saturday for 3 hours, the table never arrived. I called customer service on Monday, only to find out the delivery drivers broke the table. They never called me the cancel the appointment or notify me of the issue. I had to inquire on my end. I was ensured the new one would be ordered right away and I would be sent a $30 gift card for my troubles. Fast forward to May 21st. I had a 45 minute phone conversation with customer service to check on the status of my item, since I have not received any updated order number or tracking services. After giving me the run around and no direct answers, I was told the table had not been reordered yet and it would be yet another 4-6 weeks. For the 3 weeks between this phone call and the table breaking, nothing was done to progress my order. Not that it would have helped, but the promised gift card also never arrived. The customer service representative was very unapologetic and rude. When I asked to speak to her manager she was very reluctant and would not transfer me. She stated she would have him call me, and that has not happened yet. After spending nearly $300 on a coffee table, which has already been taken out of my account, I have no idea if I'll ever be receiving the table. This is absolutely unacceptable customer service, when it was the company and delivery service who has caused all the issues. read more
