I recently visited Dr. Shon for cavities, and unfortunately, this was one of the worst dental…read moreexperiences I've ever had.
The biggest issue was the dentist's attitude, lack of patience, and what felt like an extremely poor work ethic. I never felt like my concerns were being taken seriously, and instead of trying to work through problems during the procedure, he seemed ready to give up at any first opportunity.
The first issue was with my wisdom teeth. Before making the appointment, I specifically called and asked whether they performed extractions for impacted wisdom teeth that were still under the gum. I was told to come in for an appointment. After taking the time off work to come in, I was simply told that they couldn't do it there and that I could get a referral. That was an unnecessary waste of my time and could have easily been clarified over the phone.
Then came my cavity appointment. About 10 minutes into the procedure, I started gagging quite a bit. Instead of asking why it was happening, trying different approaches, or working with me to find a solution, he took his gloves off and said he was going to refer me to someone who could do the procedure under anesthesia. I literally had to beg him to please continue.
Then, about 20 minutes later, he tried using a larger mouthpiece to keep my mouth open. I gagged again, and once again, he was ready to take his gloves off and stop the procedure. I explained that I physically couldn't open my jaw that wide and suggested using a smaller mouthpiece. Again, I had to plead with him. Like, seriously?
A patient should not have to beg their dentist to finish a procedure they came in for.
Things can happen during dental procedures. Patients can gag. Patients can have difficulty opening their mouths. That's exactly when I would expect a professional to be patient, communicate with me, and try to find a solution.
Instead, I felt like every obstacle was an excuse to stop the procedure.
Then the cleaning was rushed through in what felt like about five minutes. At that point, it honestly felt like he just wanted me out of the office.
He wanted to schedule my next six-month appointment with a different doctor at the clinic but I'm done with this office.
A patient should feel safe, respected, heard, and encouraged in a healthcare office , whether it's a dentist, pediatrician, or any other medical professional. You shouldn't walk into an appointment feeling like you're inconveniencing the person who is supposed to be providing your care.
And I'm genuinely curious to see the response to this review, considering you seem to have plenty of time to respond to Yelp reviews. Maybe that same energy could be put toward the patients sitting in your chair.
Since you seem to be in such a hurry to rush your patients out, what exactly is the rush? Do you have somewhere else to be? Because my appointment was scheduled for a specific amount of time, and we finished well under my allotted appointment time. You get paid salary. So I really don't understand what the problem was.
I came in expecting professional dental care and basic patience and communication. Instead, I felt rushed, dismissed, and like I had to convince the dentist to actually complete the work.
I would not recommend this dentist based on my experience. I'm glad I scheduled my next appointment with someone else, and I definitely won't be returning to Dr. Shon.
