I have first found this martial arts school in the early 90's and I was super impressed with how…read moreknowledgeable the instructors were. Yes, this is the oldest Martial Arts school in Nevada from back in the 50's and it has a lot of history. I came back in the late 90's to train seriously. I've been active ever since. It's a traditional Japanese based jiu-jitsu school and they have a donation based - nonprofit pricing structure that is very affordable. To top that off, the blackbelts are some of the most knowledgeable in the area. Typically, more knowledgeable than the for profit schools in the Reno/Sparks area. There is a good family atmosphere, it's not a "cage fighting school" or "sport BJJ school" but it does have some serious training taking place. I couldn't be happier with the years of traditional jiu-jitsu training that I got here. I give this school an easy 5 stars.

The review give by Mike is completely inaccurate. This Dojo (room or hall where judo or karate is…read morepracticed) is over the top helpful with instructors that go out of their way to help when a student is having difficulty. If a student gets hurt (which is rare but it is Karate, unarmed combat by definition) the class stops and the needs of the student is immediately addressed. The instructors are patient but do insist that each form or technique is learned correctly. As it should be, this is self defense. If not learned properly the student will be at risk if they ever need to use what they have been instructed. The student is never pushed to progress faster than they can but always receive positive reinforcement. An advantage I see in this school is that it has students that have belted in other forms of martial arts. This allows the new student with little or no background in Karate to get a broader perspective of Karate. The Dojo is true to it's style which is Shorin-Ryu so even while there are students that have studied other forms the instruction is pure Shorin-Ryu. It is a family like atmosphere not a military atmosphere like some schools I have visited. I have found this approach to actually help students progress faster with better skill because they are not directed with fear of making a mistake. In my opinion if you want to learn to protect yourself and are willing to practice along with showing up for class this is a school that will allow for very satisfying success

We pulled up to the facility and my husband had told me it was previously a boxing gym he used to work out at so he was familiar with the place. As we walked in, we were greeted and was advised to fill out a liability form. There are no shoes allowed on the mats, so there was definitely a smell of shoes, socks, feet (similar to walking into Chuck E. Cheese in the 90's) area but as you walk in further in the smell dissipates. We were advised not to play on the boxing ring, which was ok but everything else was open! The best things that I loved was that they offered activities for the kids to do: tug a war, obstacle course, and nerf gun playtime! I noticed the instructors of the gym were interacting with the kids whether it was being chased with nerf guns or playing tug a war. They were teaching some kids how to properly kick! They also allow outside food advising food may be eaten on the green turf/carpet area. 90 minutes of play time and 30 minutes of food time is perfect! This is definitely a great option for birthdays to get kids energy out in a safe environment!

Overall, the gym seems pretty decent. I haven't used the pool, sauna, or hot tub yet, so I can't…read morereally review those. The equipment is in overall good shape, although there do seem to be some cardio machines that lack some of their original functionality (heartbeat sensors that don't work). The facility is pretty clean, and well organized, and I haven't seen any behavior by patrons or employees that would be off putting to anyone of any fitness level (and I should know, my strength is pretty poor right now). I can say that I definitely do not recommend that anyone use their personal training options as of now. I'm about six weeks into a six month contract (and very glad that I didn't sign up for one longer or with more/longer sessions)... and now have a third (fourth in one way) personal trainer... the first flaked and never showed for the first appointment (after the 'free personal training session' which was much more a hard sell session)... all communications except for the notice that a different trainer was assigned to me on that first paid session has been by text message, that, and only that communication was by email (which I didn't check until hours later)... no one at the gym knew about the change, either and, evidently, the other trainer was either not there or not that interested (I was at the cubicles where the pt's are based ten minutes early and stayed for at least five minutes after the scheduled time before going to do a workout on my own). The second (third?) trainer was great for a few weeks, but her schedule has now changed, so I've been shunted to a third (fourth?) trainer that I've met (I never met the second that was the rescheduled no show)... each of the three I've met has had a different focus and style, so six weeks into this, I still don't really have a set workout schedule because I haven't been able to settle into any kind of rhythm and routine. Presuming that I don't just give this up as wisdom earned, I expect no less than a few more weeks before anything changes... and who knows what else might happen between now and then. My initial goal was simply to improve my strength and possibly maximize the efficiency of my workouts as I'm getting older and coming off of an injury... six weeks has now been at least partially wasted while costing me a not insignificant amount of money and time. I would have been better off simply doing what I've done previously and working off of knowledge that's 20 years old but developing my own routine and simply doing my best... I would be farther along in improving my conditioning. If you're fine working out alone and don't need a (or want) a personal trainer, I would recommend that you consider this gym... otherwise, I'd recommend that you find somewhere else.
