I have been attending Sensei Ryan's Japanese style Jujutsu classes for over a year now. The class structure is very positive and constructive, and my classmates are practical and friendly individuals of all age ranges and backgrounds. Many of them have and have been competing and learning here for years. This is a place that you come to and want to stay, to learn, grow, and find confidence in yourself to succeed in any aspect of your life. Sensei Ryan Cary is an outstanding instructor and mentor, with a lifetime of experience and devotion to the martial arts and safety. His ability to address a class of children, adults, and adolescents is genuine. You know he really cares. I highly recommend this dojo if you are looking for a place to begin your journey in the martial arts, or further advance your practice with a master who truly knows how to instruct in great detail to all learning levels. His knowledge in professional competing all the way to street fighting practices is extremely helpful for useful applications, especially for a young woman like me. My confidence, overall happiness, and belief in myself in being capable of defending myself in any given situation, went from "eh, I could probably get out of a scary encounter", to "I feel more comfortable in my surroundings because I am more aware and observant of what to look for. I know the steps I would take to defend myself should something happen because I practiced repeatedly." When it comes down to it, we all have that fear of hurting ourselves when we fall or get pushed/tackled. This dojo has helped me learn how to fall RIGHT. My daughter was attending UNR when she started at Champion Martial Arts II, and I was so thankful she decided to get involved. (This was around the time when there was a rapist who had victimized some UNR students.) She learned self defense skills, she gained strength, and she learned poise in dangerous situations which she had to put to use a few years later - when a thug approached her in downtown Reno and demanded her purse. She did not freak out and get herself hurt. She also met her now-husband who was also a student here. The dojo arranged for a surprise proposal, where her husband participated in a demo team presentation and at the end, asked her to marry him and presented an engagement ring! I highly recommend them, they are very good at teaching students not just self defense but being models in life skills as well, and they are personable and family-oriented. read more

My children 5 and 6, have been attending CMA with Sensei Ryan for the past 2 years. I too have recently started to attend classes both with my kids and on my own with other adults. I also have several friends whose kids also attend CMA. Sensei Ryan has a tremendous amount of patience with every student. He also only chooses other instructors that can emulate the same patience as himself. The atmosphere is that of discipline but it is not overly strict. Safety is one of the highest priorities. My kids have a wonderful time during every class. I notice that generally all of the kids are enjoying themselves tremendously. Sensei Ryan is incredibly positive and places a lot of emphasis on self improvement. During each class, he always gives a brief pep talk that focuses on one of the many characteristics, behaviors, or skills needed to be successful and happy in life (perseverance, respect, honesty, discipline, etc). I often find myself reminding my children "remember what Sensei Ryan said" when we are away from the dojo. Much of the technique instruction places emphasis on self-defense in real world situations rather than just competition. Personally, I believe this is much more useful than just a focus on how to win competitive matches. Plus, the techniques can be utilized in competition anyway, so it effectively teaches it for both situations. My kids love when I attend class with them (since they aren't teenagers who hate me yet) but they really love watching me do the adult class as it is even more entertaining for them than their iPads. Sensei is always willing to spend extra time with students who struggle with certain techniques. There are several ways to participate in more advanced classes (Masters Club, SWAT, etc) and rewards are consistent (earning stripes and getting promoted to higher ranks) so the kids always feel like they are reaching their short term goals, which in turn keeps them motivated to continue working hard. Sensei and CMA hosts a variety of family events throughout the year as well as "parent's night out" evenings and movie nights. In the summer, CMA also puts on several weekly themed camps that usually sell out very quickly (Nerf Wars, American Ninja Warrior, Nuclear Dodgeball, Legos, etc) It is easy to see how much passion Sensei Ryan has for martial arts and he effectively passes that passion on to his students. I truly believe that attending CMA has been one of the best decisions I've made for my kids and myself. Sensei Ryan is a great instructor that not only teaches jiu-jitsu, but is also a fantastic motivator. Since starting classes with Sensei Ryan, I have lost 45 lbs within a year. Im over 60 years old and i am doing activities such as rolls and throws that I would have never envisioned myself doing. The instruction at this place is really great (not that I know anything about martial arts). They have plenty of instructors to manage relatively large classes. The instructors are great with the kids. My kids went for a camp which was okay. There were a lot of fun activities that they enjoyed. I wasn't crazy about the movie time that was built into each day though. I guess 8+ hours is a long time to fill with just martial arts though. The biggest reason I give them just an ok rating is due to the "sales" side of their business. My kids weren't yet members at the time of the camp. It was super high pressure to sign them up. I wasn't even allowed to take the agreement home to review it with my spouse. So after signing the kids up, like 4 and 6 year old kids sometimes do, they decide it's not for them. Disappointing, but it happens. So I figure, this is probably why there's a 30 day cancellation policy, which I was glad to have! Actually using it was another story. Between my husband and I, we called 6+ times to cancel and get a refund. Each time we were encouraged to bring them in to try it anyway, bring them in for a private lesson, bring them in at a time a friend was there, etc. It felt like they wouldn't take no for an answer despite my sharing that my little ones were absolutely refusing to go. Several times we were told that a direct deposit happened, though it did not. After 2+ weeks, I was told I needed to come into sign a form and get a physical check. After going in person to complete the form, it was clear that the business manager was none to happy. There wasn't so much as a "sorry it didn't work out, hope to see you again, etc," literally, not one word. I was hopeful that my kids would be interested in coming back another time but would probably be too uncomfortable to go back not to mention, not thrilled to deal with the high pressure sales. read more

I tried to withdraw my kids from classes due to a financial strain after my ex-husband stopped paying child support. Month after month, I was assured my card would not be billed again. It kept happening, and I was assured by the program director numerous times that my money would be refunded. This happened for three months before I finally called the billing company myself to see what was going on. I found out from them that there was no way to refund the money, and had I not called the billing company, I would have auto renewed for another year of service at the end of this month. I would have been enrolled and liable for another year of classes, with no way to cancel. I'm so glad I called when I did, and as it stands, I still have to pay for one more month to get out of my contract. Surprisingly, after I messaged the program director what I found out, there was no response from her. Bad business practice, and there are much better establishments for less money around town. read more
