BLUF: good food and friendly, prompt service. Large group…read moreof us went on a Friday night. The place was pretty full. For appetizers we got the loaded nachos, which are really good and made with a lighter, flakier tortilla chip than most are used to. The menu is a lot slimmer than many restaurants, but there is something there for most everyone. I had a Salmon Strawberry salad, which I highly recommend and which all who tried it recommend. It's big, so be ready for it. As a side I got risotto, which didn't taste bad, but was more like cheesy rice, not risotto. If you've had good risotto you know what I mean. The burgers were very popular, and the mango bourbon pork chop was very tasty. Crab cake sandwich was okay, but like all too many crab cakes I've had in the past, heavy on bread and light on good size crab chunks. They serve their drinks in plastic disposable cups, which is one thing I hate in any restaurant that is above Chipotle or similar level. The cups spill more easily, and frankly it's just not as pleasant a drinking experience. Probably doesn't bother others as much as it does me, but so be it. The server was very friendlym patient and knowledgable.

After spending an afternoon at the discovery Museum, a few blocks away, we popped in for lunch…read more It's a quaint little corner store, right next to the Maryland theater. The venue can be overwhelming, with lots of choices. One section of the menu was dedicated to hotdogs, one section is dedicated to non-hotdog entrées, and also Appetizers, desserts, and drinks. The dogs here are amazing! I loved the Chicago dog, but when I had my a bite of the Big Mac dog I wished I got that one too. Then we had the pastrami dog making it a three dog night. The fries are also especially delicious because they are crunchy and battered. My little one had a kids meal that came with fries and he was forced to share. With any hotdog, you get your choice of beef,/chicken, or veggie. We went beef all the way, and it was a great choice. The dogs are split and grilled on a flat top, and maintain all of their juicy goodness. And the toppings just enhanced everything. If you're a hotdog purist, ketchup and relish or mustard and onions would also make for perfect dogs. The staff was friendly and super accommodating to a feral toddler. For three hotdogs, a kids meal, I need rings, and drinks, the $40 price felt like a bargain. Great quality and value.

Ok so we went there on Saturday over the past weekend. It was about 5:30. I got a Chicago dog,…read morewhich was excellent, the all beef. Husband got the foot long coney dog and my son got a sausage with some kind of sauce on it. I eat about 2 hot dogs a year so when I say it was delicious, I mean it. Now the bad. My 4 year old grandson got grilled cheese. It took forever for the food to come out. Like forever forever. He ate like nothing bc he drank his whole drink while we were waiting as we had been at the park for a couple of hours beforehand. I know, not unusual for a little guy. That's not the real problem. I got a side of onion rings and it was almost $5 for like 6 onion rings. Ketchup in little packets... not cost efficient and annoying for us. Had to track down waitress to get husband a second beer and me a first. There was no air conditioning and it was so hot in there!! AND THE WORST THING OF ALL... WHEN THE BILL CAME THERE WAS A 20% INCLUDED GRATUITY FOR "LARGE PARTY", which was not discussed. First of all, it was 4 ppl. That is not a large party. Second of all, this was not mentioned by staff. I see this sometimes with a group of 8 or more and it is usually noted in a menu somewhere or mentioned. But 4 people is not a large party. My husband and I both worked in the restsurant industry in our younger years. We get it, servers need to be taken care of, but come on. BEWARE. I would have gone back for that hot dog even with the sloooowww service and just not gotten a side, but that automatic gratuity thing is ridiculous. Customer lost.

It's quite rare to see a sit-down Puerto Rican spot around here (I've mostly only had food truck…read moreversions across the country). I'm happy to have found Sofrito! The place is nicely decorated and spotless, and the staff were friendly throughout. While I don't claim to be an expert in Puerto Rican food, overall the flavors were excellent. We started with the empanadillas, which were crispy and hot. The canoas were also delicious. The plantains were perfectly ripe and sweet, and the meat filling was flavorful and provided a nice savory balance. For entrees, we all went with combo plates. Each comes with pickled onions and a small side salad (kind of like a pico de gallo), plus your choice of rice, like white rice, tostones, maduros, or seasoned rice like arroz mamposteao or arroz con gandules. The pollo was moist with a really nice aromatic seasoning on top. The pernil asado was tender with crispy skin. The bistec encebollado was my favorite. The beef was very tender, tangy from the vinegar marinade (it actually reminded me a bit of Filipino adobo), and full of flavor. Both seasoned rice options were yummy, though we all slightly preferred the arroz mamposteao as it was a bit more flavorful. We finished with flan de queso, which tasted fresh and wasn't overly sweet. Street parking was easy even on a Saturday evening. I'd go there all the time if I lived nearby!

I had the mofongo (with the garlic sauce) with the carne frita (fried beef). I'm Puerto Rican and the carne frita was probably the best I've ever had. It was crispy but not hard and it was very tender and tasty. And the garlic sauce ... OMG, so delicious. I also got chicken and pizza empanadas and a plantain soup to go. Both were pretty good too. The waiter was nice and attentive and made good suggestions. My only complaints are that I had to pay for parking and I thought the food was a little pricey for PR food/lunch. But considering the portions were decent, that there aren't a ton of PR restaurants in MD and that it was delicious, I would go back there if in the area again.
