I would likely return with a group again but it's quite pricey so a membership isn't in my current budget when I would still have to supplement this workout with others. I can say that 24 hours later I'm sore in places I forgot existed

My dislike wasn't just because of the awkwardness everyone experiences during the first class (though admittedly, I felt like I sucked at everything at first, heh). It was because I considered the prices for regular classes to be pretty steep for a class that doesn't even last an hour. Not to mention the Pure Barre branded stuff everywhere (which of course is typical of any gym franchise), the cheesy pop music and the fact that the stretching didn't seem to be enough (you can stretch on your own, obviously). I thought it was really just a glorified exercise class that you can get anywhere and didn't really see what the fuss was. And now after 10 classes, I'm hooked on the burn. They say that it takes about 3 classes to get the precision of the moves down (think tiny, intense movements) and that's about right. Now, I find myself doing these exercises just about anywhere. It's strangely addictive to clench your muscles like this. It's a fast, intense workout. Time may seem to stand still as your muscles are shaking, yet it goes by so rapidly that the class is over in the blink of an eye. You may feel that it's so fast that surely this isn't enough of a workout and what the hell did you just spend 25 bucks a class for? But it is. It's a great way to tone that body up (though you'd definitely want to supplement the workout with cardiovascular exercises to keep yourself in tip top shape). People liken it to a combination of yoga, pilates and ballet. I actually don't really see anything too much in common with yoga. Ballet, absolutely, for you're standing at a barre doing pliés which totally kill your thighs. I've never taken pilates before, so I can't remark on that. The teachers are great overall, and of course you will like some more than others. I tend to prefer the teachers that give you some kind of countdown and verbal encouragement throughout. Once the teacher becomes silent, people are more apt to rest, which you don't want to do b/c working the muscles to fatigue is kind of the point (and many will tell you this). Other good stuff: the studio is spotless, fans are plentiful, and the staff is nice. FYI, the price goes down if you buy 5, 10, and 20 sessions at a time. I just bought my next 10 classes. This is a great supplement to yoga and cardio workouts. I yearn for a gym in this city that offers both good classes and equipment, but until there is, I'll be working out at my bare bones gym, Pure Barre and various yoga studios When you compare Pure Barre to yoga, the price is kind of astronomical. (At Life yoga, 90 minute classes as low as 8-10 dollars a pop) but they do have promotional specials and in March, if you take 20 classes you are eligible for a month of unlimited at 100.00, which is pretty sweet.

I didn't find any TOO close, so I was super excited to see a sign advertising yoga at the Cabildo - a 1 minute walk from my hotel! The class was from 7:30-8:30am, which is way before the museum opens at 10am. The class was $12, which is way cheaper than what I am used to paying in NY so I was happy about that. The class itself was decent - I understand that it is an all levels class, and as an avid yogi I felt it wasn't too challenging, but other than that I enjoyed the class. I think if she had asked us visitors what our yoga experience was, she may have realized that we were pretty advanced and adjusted the level of difficulty a bit (in looking around I saw some others modifying the poses to make them more challenging). I would have liked a little music, but that's my personal preference. Nina was friendly and provided mats, blocks, and blankets for us visiting guests. If I were staying longer in town, I'd attend again. She also gave me a free ticket to the Cabildo if I decided to return to see the museum itself, which was really nice. The space is beautiful and it's definitely a piece of history to experience while in NOLA.

I consider myself intermediate, my sister a beginner and we both found comfort and challenge in the class. It is not always easy to find activities in this city that surround something other than drinking or tourists. Although the Cabildo is located close to Bourbon St, it is easy to find tranquillity in the sun soaked room. The windows stretch from floor to ceiling and are covered with billowing white curtains. I went during a construction phase so I could only imagine the beauty the place holds now. Truly a unique experience. This is the building the Louisiana Purchase was signed in for goodness sake! I certainly recommend it and will return.

Even after the gyms opened back up, the big mega gyms still made me a little uncomfy. I kept seeing ads for Hotworx and figured I give it a try. I'd done and rather enjoyed hot yoga, so I was intrigued by workouts that were all done in a sauna. I called and arranged a tour with the gym manager and was sold. It was small, had individual rooms, was open 24 hours, and the workouts were total body. Sign me up! Membership is a little more than $60/month, but you can take as many classes as you want at any time that you want. The start up cost is a little bit more as you have to purchase their special mat and towel due to the sauna temperatures. The classes are virtual, so you just follow along with a video instructor, but they're easy to keep up with while still providing a challenging workout. I also love that in addition to the sauna workouts there's a selection of free weights, ropes, and a few other pieces of equipment. On days were I just don't have it in me to do a class, I can do a quick circuit. I've never had any issues, can always find a class at the time I need, and the staff are friendly and helpful whenever I've had any questions. So glad I decided to try something new and join!
