Joanne Imperial was the Gastrointerologist who visited Mariner Medical Center until sometime last…read moreyear. I was sent to her by Dr. Bowles after my IGg antibody levels came back abnormally high and she determined that I need more specific testing through a specialist to decide whether or not I am Gluten Intolerant. Dr. Imperial got on my bad side from the second she walked in the door. She didn't even say "hello" or introduce herself first. She walked in the door and said "You're not Gluten Intolerant". WTF!?! I know I am not a doctor, and I am sure that people who try to do basic self diagnosis on the internet are probably annoying to real ones, but come on! At least ask me about my symptoms, history ... anything before shooting me down like that. It is my body and I have been living in it for much longer that the 30 seconds it took you to scan my chart. Her reasoning was that other than my IGg antibodies, my blood serum was completely normal. All this told me is that she isn't up on the latest research on this condition that says that GI may not always present with anemia and malnutrition. I am certainly not malnourished, especially not with high cholesterol, which she pointed out. Of course she didn't consider my family history at all in this (everyone, and I mean everyone, on my dad's side of the family has high cholesterol), nor did she really probe into my eating habits. Begrudgingly, she did run a few more blood tests and offered to put me on the calendar for endoscopy (which is the only sure way to diagnose). Then she disappeared. I got some terse note in the mail saying that she was ill, and was taking a break from medicine. I was very sorry to hear this. I didn't like her, but I also didn't think she deserved to be that sick. At the same time her office should have done more to make sure that her current patients got the info they needed to continue their treatment with someone else. But, sadly, no. It took me 3-4 months of calling around between her office and Mariner just to get the (relevant) test results back, not to mention the 2 months I waited to start calling and asking where they were. In the end, the more sensitive blood tests gave a weak positive ... well from what I can gather since she isn't around to explain them to me. The cherry on top is that I have been trying to move medical insurance plans, but I can't because I don't have a definitive positive or negative diagnosis. Thanks Dr. Imperial.

She devised a combination medication that has kept my conditions under control. When side effects showed up she adjusted the combination that reduced the side effects and allowed me to continue taking the medication. She did take a sabbatical leave and I don't think she's in private practice at this location at this time but I'm always grateful that her knowledge helped keep my liver ailments under control.

So I have to wait until March for banding & follow up call, I thought yeah what can I do. In March I was doing another procedure from another specialist that required me to take iron pill, but for banding no iron pill, so I have to cancel this 2nd appointment because supposed no iron pill. I wanted to schedule 3rd appointment, I spoke with Betty, she said this last time I can make appointment, because I been cancelling 2x. What ? The 1st appointment, I am not the one who cancel it, but she cancel because of her mess scheduling. 2nd appointment yes I am the one who cancel because not supposed to take iron pill. Eventhough she said I have 1 more chance to make appointment, I don't like her judgement that said I am the one cancel 1st appointment, she only wants to cover her ass !!!! I don't like her attitude. Maybe she told the doctor I am the one who cancel 2x appointment, because she wants covering her ass, she is the one who screwed up on 1st appointment, I supposed already to do banding in Dec.

He came into the room and spent barely one minute with us. We tried to explain my dad's symptoms and how he was feeling, but he didn't listen or ask any questions. Before we could say much, he left, and the nurse told us that he was recommending a colonoscopy. A few days later, we went in for the colonoscopy. After the procedure, a nurse handed us a paper and said the doctor would call if anything urgent came up. We never heard back. Two weeks later, my dad's condition got much worse, and we had to rush him to the emergency room. There, doctors discovered a malignant mass completely obstructing his colon--stage IIIB colon cancer. He went through two major surgeries to remove the tumor and treat a severe infection, spending almost two months in the hospital. It was a painful and exhausting recovery that required physical therapy and constant care. Weeks later, I finally received a voicemail from Dr. Sethi saying he needed to speak with us about the colonoscopy results--by that point, my dad had already endured two surgeries and a long hospitalization. This experience was devastating. The complete lack of communication and follow-up from Dr. Sethi's office delayed a life-threatening diagnosis and caused unnecessary suffering. No family should ever have to experience such negligence.

He recommended a colonoscopy, it was difficult to get him to explain why that procedure was the right next step. I trusted him and got it. After the procedure he gave me a 3 sentence description of what he found and a diagnosis. I had to ask a series of questions in order to figure out how I should be caring for myself after the diagnosis. In all of our interactions he frequently was looking down or away, as if distracted, not frequently making eye contact. Overall it was difficult to communicate and I did not get a sense that he "cared" about helping me get healthier.

Refusing to care for a patient for no justifiable reason is illegal. But that's the type of doctor…read moreyou will meet if you pick Dr Kutty. She is friends with Dr Melissa Adrouny, another unethical "practitioner" (quotes because they fail to do their jobs). I was originally referred to Kutty by Adrouny (might as well drop the doctor label at this point because they don't act like good doctors and are not deserving of the title) and the first thing she said was "I'm sorry other providers abandoned you. I won't do that." But low and behold she has done that and I have no idea why. In the past she referred me to a specialist at Stanford because she couldn't figure something out (who is leagues better than her) but he even stated during my appt that he would be a consult and is not my primary GI, that would remain as Dr Kutty. And even if I wanted to find a way to make him my primary I can't because he is leaving Stanford and decided to go on vacation before he leaves. I relayed all this information to Dr Kutty's office and instead of providing me care they sent me a letter stating that I could see the doc at Stanford. I tried to explain again that he is leaving again since they clearly are unable to comprehend or more likely they have no desire to pay attention and do their jobs. Turns out Dr Kutty closed my file which was never communicated to me and they stated that not only was I not allowed to get an appt with Dr Kutty but also not allowed to see any other provider at the clinic. Why?!? The only reason I can think of is that Dr Adrouny told them to not provide me care because I confronted her for her unethical behavior. And if that's the case, that's also highly unethical and illegal. This isn't elementary school. It's not okay for providers to gang up on patients. So again, find someone else and entirely different clinic than San Jose Gastroenterology. They can't handle accountability. A good provider is one that is knowledgeable, reliable, patient focused and accepts fair feedback; I've met providers like that in the past and they're a breadth of fresh air. But you're not going to receive any of those qualities with Dr Kutty. Shame on her and the SJGI staff. Quoting a best known therapist, "people will tell you to be assertive, but when you speak up for yourself with them, it will create a problem." Kutty doesn't like assertive patients.
