I visited this Martin's to buy snacks and beverages for my road trip. Prior to my visit to this…read moreMartin's, I had not previously heard of the grocery store chain. Apparently, it is owned by Giant and operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. This grocery store had the typical departments that most grocery stores have, but I felt very pleased with the large selection of products and the low prices. I also noticed a sign that said that employees start at an hourly wage of $15 per hour, so I feel happy that the employees are paid well above minimum wage. My cashier was nice and accurately rang up my items, but she was also emotionally withdrawn because apparently a previous customer had been mean to her. But I understand the situation, and I liked how two other employees were team-oriented and were empathizing with her. Finally, I saw a robot that was searching for spills and other hazards--how fun!

The last time I shopped my order was over $250 and I saved $80. That more than made up for the gas my car used in the trip to the store. However, after viewing my receipt I found a purchase I didn't recognized. I looked up the abbreviation and discovered it was for firewood. Huh? I didn't purchase firewood which cost 8.79. And I didn't even get the firewood. Well, I guess that takes care of the cost of the gas used to get there. Then I thought I would look at the rest of the purchases on the receipt. I noticed that I paid full price for the salmon that was on clearance. That was another $6.03 extra I paid for. But never mind, I still saved. Just not as much as I thought and I learned a lesson. Always watch to screen when checking out. Or at least look over the receipt before leaving the parking lot. One last thing that I should mention. The cashier was top notch, on the ball. Excellent service.

This Giant Eagle at the top of the hill used to soar. In fact, my Pennsylvania family still…read moreconsiders it to be the best of the Giant Eagle locations in the area. However, I think that's based on fond memories of the past that are no longer true today. Looking back on past reviews, where this location was compared favorably to other beloved grocers, tracks with my memory. Sadly today, the eagle is a feeble version of its once great self. The clearest indication of the fall from grace can be seen in the once sprawling beer section, set off in the front right hand corner of the store. It used to be overflowing with amazing brews from all around the world, with a deep selection of regional craft cans and bottles. Now there are empty shelves and other products tucked in where small Pennsylvanian breweries used to strut their stuff. My mother-in-law said this was the location to go to find anything you might be looking for, but I did not find that to be the case any more. I do not know if the culprit is store management, or if the reduced selection across the store is more of an indicator of the economic conditions of the town. Either way, I was compelled to weigh in on the change. Hopefully Giant Eagle can turn this location around and bring it back to its former glory.
