The interior is one of a traditional German village eating establishment, but being located close to an American base, it make concessions such a menu with pictures and English to make it easier to order. The "Stammtisch" (German for "regulars' table) is not a table, but a section of bar. Great traditional fare with accompanying beer or wine. I dined on the traditional schnitzel and it did not disappoint as it was accompanied by a great local beer. Keep room for dessert and some schnapps to help with the digestion. NOTE: it is a smallish establishment so you need to make reservations to dine, it is well worth the effort to make a reservation and dine. Guten appetite!

So take a butcher who know hows how to cook and how to respect the cut of meat, add a healthy dose of love of food and Bavarian/German cuisine, and you have a quaint little restaurant near Ramstein AFB/Landstuhl. If you are within driving distance, don't miss this gem! I had the "Garlic Marinaded Pork Ribeye" and selected the pan fried potatoes. OMG OMG OMG ... meat cut thin so two cuts served... the garlic was there front and center but NOT overpowering in any way. A bit of herbed butter, roasted garlic cloves that melt in your mouth, and these fantastically flavored potatoes that are just divine. All served with a generous side of a parsley and ?? Sour cream to die for. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Bring cash, no plastic. I wonder if I can get a free ticket change if I tell Delta I'm "dying"... they just don't need to know I'm dying to go back...

They may be potato in name but don't miss out on their meats. The steak with garlic butter is tender and cooked to perfection. The Leberkaese and Wurst is also excellent. There may be tourists here but also many local people since good food is good food no matter where you are from.

We stopped by at opening (18H) and asked if we could make a reservation for a bit later as we wanted to explore the city a bit more. The owner with limited English told us no reservations, just come back. We did just that an hour later and he was able to seat the two of us. The owner suggested a great Riesling. We struggled a bit with the menu in German since the options variety boards and not the typical entrees we had gotten used to so the owner sent out the cook to help us. We ordered a cheese variety plate and a plate with some meat varieties, cheese, and bread. Both included a few pickles and tomatoes. They were exactly the type of light fare we were looking for that night and what we expected at a wine bar. The restaurant was loaded with antique character and fit the image of what you would want a hidden gem winestub in an old city like Cochem to look and feel like. The same larger groups we saw waiting for the opening were still enjoying their meals and more wine which was easy to understand. We started with a glass each, but enjoyed it so much we got a bottle. Highly recommend Alte Gutsschanke!

Nestled away in a dark, heavily-wooded ravine, the Waldhaus Eifel offers fantastic seclusion and a little piece of heaven for those individuals wanting to sneak away to somewhere quite while in Germany. The food is stellar, with a wide variety of traditional German fare along with a smattering of other options from around the world. We sat on the outside veranda which offered a quite, peaceful lunch with only the wind through the trees making any noise. I ordered the Jagerschnitzel with Mushroom Cream Sauce and was exceptionally pleased with the meal. The entrée came with a house salad, which was almost as good as the main course! My friend and I enjoyed several beers with my favorite being the Erdinger Weissbier. Our waitress spoke excellent English and was very nice. The hotel is good, with traditionally smaller rooms than you would find in America, but this is Europe. There did not seem to be air conditioning, so the room got a little hot during the night. Also, the bed left something to be desired with regards to comfortable mattresses. In the morning, the hotel offered a spectacular European breakfast, replete with sliced procuitto, melon, and cake. The also offered a wide assortment of hot dishes to include eggs, bacon, and sausage. Strongly recommended for the traveler looking for a quiet place to sneak away and relax.
