Ramstein village is a small village in between Landsthul and Meisembach and is on the Meisembach side of the village. There was a festival on-going at the time as well so the roads were blocked but we drive around them anyway. There used to be a German bowling alley there as well. Now closed but the gasthaus is still there. Worth the effort to go. The pizza is good as well. Lots of carry out for pizza. Lots of phone orders coming in. Traffic was light and service was good. The Pils was cold and good. Cold is relative here though since beer is just slightly cooler than room temp but it's brewed to be drank that way.

Luxury hotel and restaurant with a deep medieval history to explore…read more The castle ("schloss") originally built in 1152 by famed Emperor Frederick I (aka "Barbarossa" or in English: 'red beard') was part of an extensive network of defensive positions designed to protect the SW borders of the Rheinland Palatinate. The original works were further strengthened by landed-knight Franz von Sickingen to supposedly withstand 16th century artillery. His efforts were less than successful since the castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times afterwards without much success. The current ruins date from the French inflicted destruction of 1689 during the Nine-Years War (which incidentally engulfed not only all of Europe but also spilled over to Asia, the Caribbean, and the New World, where it was known in the Colonies as "King William's War"). History aside, the current establishment is resplendent with first-class room accommodations (renovated and well appointed... check out the eiderdown pillows and comforters) and an impressive 4-star restaurant with changing menus and fantastic chefs. I highly recommend all the local specialties ("spargel" or white asparagus is in season in spring and should not be passed up if it's on the menu as well as all the local game--trout, boar, red deer--if in season and if listed on the menu), but everything is exceptional so let your own tastes and preferences guide you. The wine list is....well....magnificent, but pricey. Service is typical high-end European (for Americans who've never been out of their country before, this means "grow patience, be humble, and just go with the flow"... you won't be disappointed). The rooms are modern, quiet, inviting, exceptionally clean, well-maintained by an efficient but friendly staff who were very pleasant, had old-world manners, and regarded us with understandably professional distance. The rooms were a bit smaller than those in most American hotels, but they are lavishly appointed and very comfortable. Despite the considerable language barrier, our hosts were very accommodating: we made frequent trips to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, visiting wounded/injured American GIs, and our host always arranged reliably for our transportation - which we appreciated very much. A funny thing here is that they do not bring all the food at once and they do bring as it gets ready and released by the kitchen, that seems to be a common practice in the country. the prices here are pretty reasonable and the decor is pretty cool! I really loved that they actually have a water fountain inside the restaurant. The food I got here was pretty good. MUSHROOM SCHNITZEL - it came with a choice of side and the sides are pretty ok, not the best but ok. however the mushroom sauce is pretty amazing and I came back here for this dish many times.
