Downtown Ann Arbor, Main Street

In a day and age when bookstores are being run out of business by Amazon and other online…read moremarketers, it is good to see an old-fashioned bookstore stocked to the ceiling with titles ... all new books in a wide range of genres ... leaning academic or at least intelligent nonfiction with only a bit of popular fiction. We were not surprised to run across this kind of bookstore in a major college town like the University of Michigan. The store is located on a corner in a busy area of Ann Arbor, and covers two stories ... a first floor and a basement ... both well stocked. The staff was very helpful, especially with their "staff picks." We'll visit again ...

I love to purchase the shelves and find something new, although I found the layout slightly confusing, and I found various books and multiple locations. The little tags that talk about unique aspects of the book are a really nice touch. I did find it to be slightly biased politically, but I'm not sure what you can expect in downtown Ann Arbor. They did have a beautiful special version of a book that my best friend from Australia loves, so I was able to pick up that copy. I can't wait to send it to her. When I told her about it, she cried. The book is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much Literati for stocking such lovely products! Sidenote - this bookstore used to have delicious oat milk, lattes and unfortunately, they do not the café upstairs anymore. I do like that they got rid of all the tables where people would sit for hours on their computer computers. Now there is more room for books and I enjoy their selection of YA, cookbooks, and other genres. This is the same bookstore. We brought our Canadian friends too to browse, and it was very fun also. Thank you so much Indie bookstores. We love to stop in!

Elevated Press is absolutely amazing. Michelle and Peter are two of the nicest people you could ask…read moreto work with and extremely professional and "on top of it" to boot. I came in with a very scattershot idea of what I wanted for my wedding invitations and Michelle very patiently listened to my thoughts and expertly guided me through choosing paper and figuring out what I wanted more exactly design-wise. (Keep in mind that you can also come in with a print-ready design and they'll print it up for you! I highly, highly recommend their design work though--SO beautiful.) Throughout the design and printing process Michelle kept me updated on every development through email and responded quickly with any questions I had. At one point I thought I might have to make a last minute change, but then realized I didn't, and she very gamely accomodated my waffling, even offering to rush order a new plate for super-cheap if I needed it. The entire process from first meeting to getting the invites in my hands took about 5 weeks, so make sure you give yourself ample time if you're interested in their services. Also--it ain't cheap, but it is so, so worth it. Each invitation is truly a work of art and people have been going nuts over how amazing they look. I cannot recommend Elevated Press highly enough! Such a wonderful resource to have in Ann Arbor.

There seems to be something for everyone. * Old fashioned candies * Games and toys * Fabric and craft section * Housewares * Boutique with handbags, jewelry, etc. * Gifts * Baby stuff We were there to shop for fabric. There is a nice variety of fabrics, especially if you like "modern" fabrics by designers such as Amy Butler. There was a lot of embroidery floss and crochet and knitting needles. Books and patterns for quilt making. See my photos for a charming flag quilt that was hanging as a sample in the store. Great idea: Take a pre-stretched painter's canvas, stretch some attractive fabric over it, chunk it down with a staple gun, and voila -- instant wall art. The samples were very inspiring. I had a good look at all the games. Lots of mind-stimulating activities for all ages. Lots of fun stuff in this store, and the atmosphere encourages one to slow down and linger. At one point I said to my friend, "I really LIKE this store!" Nice selection of candies, including chocolates, jelly beans, penny candies, bit o' honey and similar treats from your childhood. Yum! I would love to go back and visit any time. A slice of old-time fun.

One thing: be careful about the classic candies, gums. I bought a pack of Teaberry gum last time I was there and it was hard as a rock...like it had been transported from the Sixties... If you have any time to kill before a concert, it's a third Thursday, or you're just wanting to browse, this is definitely the place for you. The store specializes in cute fun gifts and trinkets. They have everything from cookbooks to baby toys to stickers. There are gifts for almost every age and demographic. There are often goods from local artists and creatives which is really nice. One of my favorite features is the monthly art locker. For a one-time cost, you get a physical key with access to a locker with monthly goodies! The staff may be some of the kindest I've met. You can always talk about your day or learn about what's been going on downtown. There is a shop cat named Yuki who is soooooo cute and is my personal "where's waldo" whenever I'm in the store. Their marketing and promotions are really fun and the videos often make me laugh. They offer some free and paid events, making it a nice place to meet new people and engage in creativity. One of these days I need to make their cloud workshop!
