Captain Louis worked with us ahead of time to plan a trip that the whole family would love -- a stop at Thumb Cove, picnic on Fox Island, and an incredible view of whale bubble netting in the bay. The trip out to the bay was smooth and boat very clean and comfortable, with life jackets for the kids. We loved our picnic and scenic walk on Fox Island -- kids, dog, and all! Very easy and save to get on and off the boat with our kids and small dog. After our picnic, Captain Louis navigated us to the most remarkable bubble netting whale watch, which felt like National Geographic (see the video here!), and was a highlight of our trip. We will definitely be joining Alaskan Coastal Safari again next time we visit Alaska, maybe for a fishing trip and Bear Glacier!

This was one of the most special things I've seen in my life. If you are in Seward, you need to see Bear Glacier and very few operators go there. Bear Glacier completely blew our minds. I know decades from now, I will still think about that time my husband and I went to Bear Glacier. Captain Louis also took us to see various wildlife: birds of all kinds, a humpback whale, otters, seals, and sea lions. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the animals and the area. Captain Louis brought us to spots that the big tour companies don't go, which I really appreciated.

There are several areas with benches to sit and take the scenery, which is also beautiful. When you come, there is no fee for parking, which is great. Restrooms are available and be mindful that the ones closest to the parking lot are out houses, but they do have regular bathrooms with running water. This is such a scenic place to see and interesting to view all the markers of where the glacier was over overtime and how it's receded. Happy hiking!

Along the way, you'll see signs showing where the glacier used to reach as far back as the 1920s. Seeing how much it has retreated over the years makes it feel so real that one day, this glacier might disappear. It's a little heartbreaking, but also makes you pause and truly appreciate what we still get to see today.

We were in a big group and covered 4.35 miles in a little over 2 hours. Once you get to the beach, you can go as far as you want First couple miles is shaded and has lots of mosquitos in June/July. It goes up about 600 ft of elevation. Then you get to a bridge, cross a creek, and can basically go as far as you want down the rocky beach (another group did 14 miles round trip). The beach is pretty easy to walk on, can be a little uneven/slippery if you're trail running. There are restrooms and plenty of parking at the trailhead. I didn't see any water but may have missed it.

Tucked away at the MOST southern most point on the southern most road in Seward, this park is apparently VERY popular with locals. There's an upper and lower parking lot. The lower parking lot (closer to the beach) is for day use ONLY. The upper lot may be used by day users, or folks who are planning to back pack in for a longer visit. We only hiked in and out the first 2.5 miles for total of 5 to the beach at Tonsina Creek. It was a nicely paced walk larely uphill through a rainforest. The canopy was really beautiful in some places, with lovely songbirds and mature redwoods covered in ageless moss. The last 3/4 mile of the Tonsina Creek Trail is though a magical swamp through adequately paced switchbacks and bridges. You can hear and smell the ocean as you make your way through the forrest. Then you arrive at a bridge and voila! Tonsina Creek feeding into Resurrection Bay lakes out before you... fabulous. Walk down the beach a bit and you'll see a glacier ahead of you and Miller's Landing to your left. From this point you can continue on or turn around depending how much time you have.

"Where Mountains, Ice, and Ocean Meet"…read more Exploring this National Park was a nice addition to my trip to Alaska. I came here to do volunteer work. In the evenings, we mostly fished in the Kenai River. After finishing up our work, my group planned two fun days at the end of the week. One day we chartered a boat in Homer to Halibut fish and the other we visited Seward and got to see the Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. Kenai Fjords National Park is massive. It is the fifth most-visited park in Alaska and is the closest national park to Anchorage. The park was established in 1980 and encompasses over 600,000 acres outside of the town of Seward. Snow and ice cover 50 percent of the park with the Harding Icefield stretching over 700 square miles. The park's headquarters and visitor center are located in Seward. The nice thing about Kenai Fjords National Park is that it provides both leisurely and adventurous activities for visitors. Activities include kayaking, boat tours, camping, fishing, biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, dog sledding and mountaineering. Various companies offer tours that are guided by National Park Rangers. In addition to seeing the beautiful scenery up close, you can also see both land and marine wildlife. Seward is also a destination for cruise ships and provides passengers from the ships with tours of the park. Kenai Fjords National Park lies on the southeastern side of the Kenai Peninsula and can be reached from Seward. The most significant fjords include Aialik Bay, Harris Bay, McCarty Fjord and Nuka Bay. Most of the interior of the park is covered by the Harding Icefield. A cool thing for me was that I was doing work at an airport when I was here in Alaska. Because my work was volunteer, one of the pilots offered to take some of us up in a plane to see Alaska from above as an appreciation for the work that we were doing. We flew over the Harding Icefield and got to see how massive it was. It was such an awesome experience. Another way to see the icefield up close is to hike on the Harding Icefield Trail. Kenai Fjords National Park is made up of three main areas - the Exit Glacier, Harding Icefield and the coastline. The Exit Glacier is the easiest section of the park to reach. I stopped by the visitor center in Seward first before seeing the glacier. It is a nice place to visit and to learn about the park. There are park rangers on hand to answer questions and a gift shop. We then headed over to the Exit Glacier. It is the only destination in Kenai Fjords National Park that is accessible by land. They have a small nature center that you can visit before heading out on the trail to the glacier. The Exit Glacier hike is the best way to see this glacier up close. Sadly, the glacier has shrunk considerably due to climate change. They have signs showing where the glacier once stood by year. Park scientists continue to monitor and record the glacier's accelerating recession. At some point, you won't be able to see the glacier anymore from the overlook trail. I really enjoyed my time visiting this park. Getting a chance to fly over the Harding Icefield was an amazing experience for me. Then checking out the Exit Glacier later in the week really made me appreciate how beautiful this park is. I hope someday I can return here and hike on Harding Icefield Trail to get up and close to it.

We saw the Holgate and Aialik glaciers, tons of wildlife (Orcas, sea otters, Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, puffins, and more). The finale was seeing the amazing rock formations in Porcupine Bay. Afterwards, we stopped by the Kenai Fjords National Park visitor center to learn more about the park. Wish we had more time for further exploration!

I think this is a really wonderful trail that is 16 miles long. I've hiked in from Primrose and…read morecamped at Lost Lake, which is about 7-8 miles in and is amazing in scenery changes. I also hike in from the other side to hit up Dale Clemens cabin which is 2.5 on the winter trail. One time I tried to find the cabin from the summer trail and we got lost, so I'd like to think I've hiked about 12 miles of this trail total. Looking back it would have been great to have continued on and ended in Seward when I overnighted at the lake, but I just didn't have all the facts at the time. There is a creek near both trails for water if needed, and the terrain goes from mossy woods to hiking through a mountain pass not unlike the gap of Rohan. If you come from the Primrose side there is an old mining cabin off to the side, about 4 miles up, and has a wheel in the water that I think was used for power. It's an interesting feature to the hike that is worth the stop. I would come again and hopefully complete the entire trail sometime.

It also leads to an overlook of roaring falls. Salmon can be seen jumping the falls or taking a...uh.."breather"(?) by the fish ladder. We were setting up to fish and a Brown Bear came down from the forest, grabbed a dead furry thing out of the river, went up a hill, and started eating it while staring at us. So, we left. 3-stars because this trail ain't all that scenic if you don't see a bear. Also because it is EXTREMELY crowded. We saw a single group of 20+ people. How a trail that wasn't even listed on Yelp, and isn't near a major population center, is this crowded...I don't know.
