She trained rhythmic gymnastics at the pre-team level with Miss Sofia, the head coach of the club. I can't fully express my gratitude for Coach Sofia's wisdom this season in approaching all the girls in a way that preserves pure joy for this sport. My daughter has been genuinely happy to come to every single session -- and she's been training nine hours a week since February. She made friendships easily, and I truly feel the environment encourages that. We cheer for all the girls without comparing them. She competed without any nerves, because no pressure was ever placed on these young athletes. I believe she received a wonderful foundation. What matters most to our family is that we have a child who is excited to continue her rhythmic gymnastics journey -- and that says everything. Thank you, Coach Sofia. I also want to mention that San Diego Rhythm has an Aesthetic Group Gymnastics (AGG) program, and my daughter Matilda was part of the team for 4-6-year-olds. Her AGG coach was Miss Lina, and Matilda absolutely loved spending time with her and her teammates during practices. Miss Lina kept the little ones within boundaries beautifully while always showing them warmth and humor. The AGG experience left a lasting impression - Matilda still asks me when they'll do it again. We're so grateful for both sides of our experience at this club!

The girls were taught here not only skills, but also to be a kind person and respectful for others. This year, we also went to the big international stage. It couldn't happen without support from the coaches. I'm so proud to a member of the SDR family.

I've been swimming laps in San Diego for 4 years, and I have just now discovered the wonderful…read moreoutdoor public pools! I first saw that there was one in Balboa Park (which is currently still under winter maintenance), and upon some further research have discovered there are ~15 pools around San Diego with lap lane hours during the week and weekends, with a drop in rate of $4 per day! I've suffered through so many swims at the indoor pool at 24 hour fitness, not knowing there were these available to me! Specifically regarding the pool at Carmel Valley Rec Center. I came on a weekday evening (5:30pm) in May. So I assume things may change in the summer. But I had a lovely experience! The outside of the Rec center, and parking area is much nicer than some of the other rec centers around San Diego I've visited. I paid my $4 entry fee and went through the locker room. Of note, there are no lockers at this pool (there are at some of the others), however I also felt much safer leaving my bag out on a chair at this one than some of the others, there are showers. The water was warm enough, but not too warm during my laps. I swam for 45 minutes and had the whole lane to myself the entire time. It looks like there's a big slide that goes into the pool (that wasn't open while I was there), as well as a cute play area for kids that's right next to the pool.

Unfortunately, what should have been a wonderful family outing turned into an incredibly disappointing and upsetting experience. It started with the facility opening approximately 10 minutes late, leaving families standing outside in the heat. When I called to ask about the delay, I was told the pool chemicals were not at the appropriate levels. Also both slides were not open due to short staffing and that was one of the reasons why we wanted to come to the pool. Once we were finally allowed inside, our 12-year-old daughter wanted to swim in the deep end. She was told she needed to complete a swim test, which we completely understood. She was asked to swim freestyle to the other end and back, and she did exactly that. However, the lifeguard wasn't satisfied and instructed her to put her entire face in the water. Our daughter is a very capable swimmer, but she also has a learning disability and was having difficulty understanding precisely what the lifeguard wanted her to demonstrate. Rather than recognizing that she might need clearer instructions, he had her repeat the test two more times. What happened next was particularly upsetting. The same lifeguard then tested a group of seven boys. We watched as six of the seven completed the swim without keeping their faces down in the water, yet all seven boys were passed. My husband and I were shocked, confused, and deeply disappointed. Most importantly, our daughter was left feeling singled out and treated differently. Let me be clear: We fully support swim tests and understand that safety must always come first. What we do not support is inconsistent standards, unequal treatment, or a lack of understanding and sensitivity toward children with learning differences. Children deserve patience, encouragement, clear communication, and, above all, fairness. A learning disability should never result in a child being made to feel embarrassed or excluded. What was supposed to be a happy Sunday at the pool became an unnecessarily upsetting experience for our daughter and our entire family. Carmel Valley Recreation Center, please do better. Train your lifeguards not only in water safety but also in awareness, inclusion, communication, and consistent treatment of every child. Every child deserves to feel welcome, respected, and treated equally, regardless of how they learn or process instructions.
