This mural was completed in 2018 by Shepard Fairey and is such a beautiful addition to the city. I…read moreread that it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the musician's iconic "At Folsom Prison" album. It's definitely one of the more iconic murals in Sacramento and it's hard to miss when you're in the area. It's fun to see during different times of the day in the city and even more fun if you go on a mural walk through the city.

Located at the Residence Inn on 15th Street, the Johnny Cash Mural covers an entire side of the…read morefifteen-story hotel, and can be seen from several blocks away. If you want to get technical (and I do), it's actually called the Shepard Fairey Mural, after the artist who painted it. Fairey painted this particular mural in 2018, as part of Sacramento's annual Wide Open Walls mural festival. The design is based on a photo taken by famous photographer Jim Marshall. According to his biography on the Wide Open Walls website, Fairey founded the OBEY clothing line, as well as the Studio Number One agency. He was commissioned by TIME magazine to create two Person of the Year covers, including one of Barack Obama. A quick Google search of his name leads to dozens of other incredible murals. Personally, this is one of my top ten favorite murals in Sacramento, and I consider it a must-see. I find it hilarious that the previous reviewer pointed out that it's "free to see," since it can be publicly seen from so far away. Anyway, my favorite Johnny Cash song is Hurt. What's yours?

REVIEWER #1 Okay, so…read morewhen I hear a Taco Festival I am expecting the BEST well known Taco Trucks to be there...Right? Well I was so wrong! ARGH. Good thing I didn't make this only the only event to attend on a lovely Saturday, OH BOY! I would have been disappointed. I walked in around 12PM and it was a good amount of people. They had about 10 booths and it was along the streets of Del Paso Blvd which they had most of the areas blocked off. It cost $10 to get in, plus you had to pay for the food and drinks. I was kind of excited to see what tacos trucks they would have there to represent the festival and the options were not high end or nothing to brag about: *Jimboys Tacos- Tacos were aight but nothing to brag about. However the taco shell was nice and crunchy. The seasoning was salty, which was unbearable after the 5 bite. *Azteca Street Tacos-Long to pay and wait for food was a disaster! *Tina's Tacos Catering-Sold out by 1PM!! WTF?? They also have other vendors there such as: *Issa's Gelatos- No Yelp page for this business *Snowie- No Yelp Page for this business *Spirit Cakes- Selling their cakes and cookies *Little Rich's Italian Ice *Pork Daddy's BBQ No bathrooms or porta pottys in the area. Wtf? With the hot weather and all the water I just can't believe it! Also no trash cans so people are just throwing all their trash on the floor...so disappointing! Conclusion of the story-They cannot get 3 stars!! Only 2.5! And I'm being generous! I heard they were not doing well last year and I see the status hasn't changed. Would I come back next year? NA, I can get tasty tacos in my area for much cheaper and tastier! ..NOT WORTH COMING Review # 38/196

J Street is one of my favorites in Sacramento. Even before we moved here we would visit and we'd…read morealways end up exploring J. It became my starting point for finding anything else in the city. Now that we live in Sacramento it's also one of our most used exits heading into the city. You can get off the 5 on J and the city just opens up to you. First you'll find DOCO and the arena, you could also choose to head off to Old Sacramento. You'll see a variety of restaurants, some only open on the weekdays and some that have become staples of our community. Keep your eyes open for gorgeous and fun murals along the way as well. As you continue, you'll pass Cesar Chavez Plaza and park where there's plenty of parking for nearby adventures. The SAFE Credit Union Convention Center is only a short distance away, followed by the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. Continue your drive and you're in the heart of Midtown with more shopping, food and entertainment. Also, love that Midtown has free parking on the weekends. As you continue past well known businesses like Mike's Camera Shop, Rick's Dessert bar, Ginger Elizabeth, Jungle Bird and more you'll start leaving Midtown and make your way to East Sacramento. Don't worry, there's more to love as you continue. The Sacramento Turn Verein where you'll find annual Oktoberfest celebrations. La Trattoria Bohemia, Pachamama, the newly relocated Allspicery for tasty food, drinks and ingredients. There is a lot to discover on this street. If you drive far enough this one way street becomes two lanes and then disappears into H Street, ok it didn't disappear, it merges and becomes part of H street and then Fair Oaks Blvd. But what really matters are the memories we made along the way.

Dark Musical Beauty Eats Your Mind & Explodes Your Heart With JOY!…read more SITREP Oh my GAWD! Last night's "Artmix Dark Cabaret" was mindblowingly spectacular. The food bites and the drinks were all as yummy as ever. But at the center of it all, we spent the evening with Kat Robichaud's Misfit Cabaret ("Kat's Misfits") - it was like walking into the stand-alone garage of your grandparents home, and finding your really cool, edgy niece there, using it as a hangout with all her equally cool ecclectic & eccentric dancing & band buddies... .....EXCEPT instead of listening to the sugary-fructrose infested music of today's pop airwaves, these glorious dark talented souls SOMEHOW got their hands on your grandparents' (her GREAT-grandparents') CLASSIC VINYLS from yesteryear: a sad, yet special place & time when people were bullied into escaping a very dark period of Continental Europe, and wistfully saying goodbye to the center of what was a new, sexy, dynamic musical movement that started in Berlin, but thankfully not ending there during the 20th Century's Dark Ages: CABARET. THE SETUP Kat's Misfits are an incredibly creative ensemble of vocalists, musicians, dancers, aerial artists and exqusiite burlesque performers. Each group & genre of artists not only immerses themselves into the traditions of the realm they perform in, but makes it their own, and using their chosen foundations, creates NEW & DYNAMIC pieces in that same tradition - to name just a few: * Bree is a whimsical vaudevillian muse who is the beautiful feminine alter-ego of Charlie Chaplin himself with her sweet balance & juggling feats - I would love take her shopping at a Hat Store! :) * Frankie is absolutely AMAZING & STUNNING as the beautiful polished burlesque performer you just cannot take your eyes off of - I've never seen a more graceful feather dance achieved to such a level of perfection! * The Misfits! People always forget to mention the talent backup bands! Not this time! These guys are great performers, 100% into the full time span of the show, and ALWAYS on their musical, just like Kat herself - and speaking of which.... * KAT!!!! And I just can not use enough wonderful adjectives, adverbs, superlatives and exclamation points to describe Kat herself! As a fan of hers since her days on "The Voice", its so wonderful to see how she has since fanned the flames of her amazing talents to become the creative muse & genius behind this exciting Cabaret troupe, not only performing herself to the delight of we patrons, but taking on the inordinate task of managing, coordinating, and bringing other like-minded artists together for fantastic shows. BRAVO! Last night's ArtMix introduction of Kat's Misfit was just an introduction. Make it a point to go see Kat's Mifits in their San Francisco home theater location as indicated on their Facebook page, and/or make sure to follow their calendar of events and catch their troupe's traveling performances like I did when they were here at the Crocker Art Museum for last night's "ArtMix" event. THE LOWDOWN October ArtMix was spectacular and at the center of it all, Kat and her Misfit Cabaret left a big smile on ours faces yearning for more!
