The tattoo that I requested was very simple and small, and they could not have executed this more perfectly. Furthermore, this was my first tattoo, and they put my newbie nerves at ease immediately. Pros: Price: The tattoo that I received cost $160 (pre tip). They ask for a deposit of 50% in advance, and then have you pay the rest onsite. I believe that $160 is the minimum price for any tattoo here. Tripp provided me with a quote in advance, per my request, and was very prompt and direct about the pricing as soon as I provided him with an example of what I wanted, which I really appreciated. I initially felt like this price was a bit high, however I called several highly rated tattoo parlors in the area, and this was the lowest price for my simple tattoo. So comparatively, this place checks out, price-wise! I am glad I paid to have it done at Wasteland, as the experience was incredible. Accuracy: The tattoo was executed exactly as I requested-- I couldn't have asked for it to be any more accurate, honestly. It was simple, but I think with simple designs, any flaws are even more visible, in a way? So I was very pleased with how it came out. Friendliness: I had a very pleasant experience here. Banter throughout the tattooing process, I felt like my artist and I were just friends hanging out. There were upbeat R&B oldies playing, which put me right at ease. Pain: Truly painless, to be honest. I was shocked by how little pain I experienced. Honestly, it was reminiscent of a small scratch. Also super quickly completed. Simplicity of booking: Booking this appointment was so easy. I figure that this is partly due to the simplicity of my design, however I was still surprised how quickly they got me in. I was able to secure an appointment within a week of reaching out. When I showed up, they were ready for me, and the entire experience felt very streamlined and efficient. Clean studio: The studio was clean, modern, spacey, and private. The bright colors and upbeat music put me at ease immediately. Masks were worn throughout the process. Instructions on treatment/self care of tattoo: My artist provided me with detailed instructions as to how to care for my tattoo. I asked a lot of beginner, kinda silly questions, but never felt belittled, and felt like I was being taken seriously and really cared for just in the way that my questions were addressed. The care process was honestly very easy, and within a couple of days, I felt that it was pretty much healed up! A super easy and fun process :) Cons: Truly ZERO from me! I am so pleased with my tattoo and impressed with the overall experience offered at Wasteland tattoos. I am recommending to all of my friends in the DC area! Go here! My artist was Dr. Z, I wasn't so much nervous about his artistic capabilities, if you do some preliminary research on Instagram and yelp you will find out that Dr. Z is absolutely amaze ballz, but for someone who has a visible crap tattoo there is still a lot of trepidation because it is so permanent. I had had a consultation with Dr. Z months ago, and staff was pretty good about getting me on his book pretty quickly (I had to reschedule, but they initially got me in within the month). There is a $60 deposit so bring cash. During our consultation he listened to what I wanted, although there was a lot of "I don't know, maybe, what do you think" on my part, he didn't seem to get frustrated. He agreed to draw a stencil and we went on our way. Honest, I was gonna bail, it's permanent, what if I don't like it, maybe my mother is right. Ode to the over-thinker. But come on you can't book yourself for 2 1/2 hours on someone's book and just not show up! That's rude. So with several doubts running through my head and an Eminem song about sweaty palms and weak knees stuck in my noggin I walked in, and ended up walking out with something I loved. Due to artist integrity you don't see what you're getting until the day of. Dr. Z drew a beautiful row of flowers to go between two bands, but I wasn't sure that was exactly what I wanted, I apologized for being so indecisive but he kindly reassured me that he understands this is permanent and that it's perfectly fine to take our time to get it just right. So again he took my scrap ideas, my "maybe this?" To something that was perfect for me. Although I've only had two interactions with Dr. Z he genuinely seems like a nice guy, I never felt like I was being rushed or being a burden, he's there to do his job as best as he can to make his clients happy. I paid a decent amount for what I got, but I believe it was fair, I had been turned away by two other shops because line work IS very difficult and quoted a ridiculous price at another place. I mostly only talked to Z but the interactions I saw between staff and clients was very friendly and welcoming. Laughing hyena is the place to go if you're a little nervous or if you just want great ink! This will be the place I will be going to get my next tattoo. read more

This is a mixed review. I got a really beautiful piece here and I couldn't be happier with it. I had a great experience before and during the process and was encouraged to schedule a touch up appointment within a month. So I schedule the touch up because there's two small things that I have questions about. When I arrived, I learned I had been booked over. The artist was clearly rushing me and made me feel like I was taking away another client's time. Probably the worst of it is that when I did point out the two minor things (I'm talking dots), my artist got angry and pulled other people in the shop into the conversation. It was so embarrassing and I felt like I was being bullied over coming in again (I wouldn't have even gone back if not for them saying "definitely book a touch up!") The only one of the four tattoos on my body I regret is the one done somewhere OTHER than Laughing Hyena. I have had nothing but Amazing customer service, quality art, and complete satisfaction with design and execution when it comes to decorating my skin at Laughing Hyena Tattoo. In my opinion, compared with my one regret tattoo done elsewhere, Dr. Z has a light touch with the tattoo machine...he is attentive to the needs of his clients, communicating well about how far into the piece he has gotten (two of the tats are on my back so I couldn't see progress) and his work is quality...I get compliments all the time on the colorful work on my shoulders and leg. It is a travel for me to get to DC from Harrisburg PA, but it is worth it to go see Z annually to mark another milestone in my journey with a tattoo. read more

Knowing that the top tattoo places in DC are booked weeks and months in advance, I emailed 8 weeks in advance the two places (to remain unnamed here) that were personally recommended to me. Artists from the two shops emailed me back to say they had no availability during my time frame. I work abroad and am rarely home. When I'm back in DC, it's usually for 2-4 weeks at a time. Thus, my time frame was very limited. Laughing Hyena was the third place I emailed. Someone responded immediately and explained their consultation and deposit process; the first appointment is just a consultation and the client is required to put down $60 deposit if they want to proceed with the tattoo. The work is then done on another appointment. This process seemed very formal to me, especially since I was able to get my previous two tattoos done on the same day as the consultations (they were done in NYC--check out my older reviews). I explained my situation and my tight schedule, asking if I can do my consultation and appointment on the same day. They responded with, "Usually no, unless it's a very small tattoo." I agreed to a consultation anyway, hoping for the best. When I went in for my consultation, the artist I requested was busy. I think they might have double-booked. I explained my dilemma again, asking if I can get my tattoo done that day. The consultation seemed rushed (probably because the artist wanted to get back to the client who was waiting to finish a touch-up) and I ended up making a second appointment with a different artist (Isaac) who had more availability. Before I left, I asked the receptionist to make sure she passed my Pinterest board to Isaac so he can get an idea of the designs, styles, and elements that I was looking for since he wasn't at the shop that day to do a consultation. She reassured me it will be done. When I returned for my second appointment, Isaac was confused as to whether I was there for a consultation or to get the tattoo. I was beyond exasperated at that point, but I took a deep breath and explained my entire story from beginning to end, how I was promised that he would take a look at the Pinterest board since he and I never did a consultation. So he went into the emails and found the one where I sent the board, scrolled through the designs, discussed what I wanted... It was a consultation all over again! At that point, I was extremely nervous about the time since they were closing in a couple of hours. Isaac reassured me the job would be done quickly which made me worry about quality; I didn't want him to rush through it either. This long story has a happy ending... Isaac was very patient with me as he had to correct the stencil (it was missing a word), made sure it was placed exactly where I wanted it, and even squeezed in another last-minute change--the placement of the second tattoo. The entire job cost much less than I had estimated and took only a quarter of the amount of time I had expected. Isaac has a reputation for getting tattoos done quickly and done very well; he completely exceeded my expectations and I'm glad things had worked out the way they did. read more

I made an appointment here after an independent local tattoo artist cancelled on me with less than one week's notice. I got a matching tattoo with two other people, so scheduling had already been complicated. Shilo helped us arrange a consult with Simba, who was able to schedule us just a couple weeks later. Our memorial tattoo idea had a lot of personal meaning, and Simba was kind and understanding. She has matching memorial tattoos as well, and we could tell she knew how important it was to us. Two out of the three of us had never gotten tattoos before. Simba was kind and funny and guided us through it easily. The resulting work was clean and beautiful, and it's healed great on all three of us. I'll be back to see Simba for my next tattoo. read more

If I could leave 0 stars, I would. Emma is constantly being verbally abused by Isaac. He is SO RUDE. He stated my design was "too small" even though it is quite simple and standard. I liked his portfolio so I wanted him to do my tattoo but instead (even though he was very much so free) he made Raff do it. Also, they charged me 100$ for this SIMPLE AF 1-color outline tattoo. Not only was Isaac literally the rudest person ever, they would only let one of my friends behind the chain fence they use to separate the lobby from the tattoo chairs. Also, they didn't gauze wrap my tattoo--only saran wrapping it which came off within 10 minutes. Here is the tattoo I got. Also, this place accepts cash only which is bullshit. Love love love Laughing Hyena. I've only been tatted and pierced in Jersey at the places I've known and trusted for years, but big changes call for big moments. He's funny and personable and makes you feel instantly comfortable. He also really knows what he's doing. I'm so happy with my rook that I'm going back to him for my helix! This is my first time writing a review on Yelp and I wholly believe this shop totally deserve it. I knew about this shop when I went to the DC Tattoo Expo on January. I had a clear idea of what I wanted back then and from all the shops that I asked, Laughing Hyena were the only ones who really showed interested and gave me full details about pricing and all of that - It felt almost like I was having a consultation already. After a couple of months of doing some research about their artists, It was so difficult to choose a specific one because all of them showed awesome skills and had beautiful art on their portfolios. At the end, I decided to go with Dr. Z and I was not disappointed at all! From the day I met him he showed humbleness and willingness to do his best. He's really good with colors, I love how he can easily combined and played with them. His line work is also beautiful and flawless. Since my tattoo required more than one session, I went there more than once and every time I was there I felt like I was at home. The atmosphere is really nice, by the second session Dr. Z knew already my name which it might not sound like a big deal, but I think that shows how they really care about their customers. Also, there was one day that they ordered some pizza and when we were on our break with Dr. Z he offered me to grab some and eat with them. So.. I suggest you should get a big tattoo that requires more than one session therefore maybe if you are lucky enough you get some pizza during one of your sessions (I hope I'm not compromising them haha!) The shop is located in Columbia Heights, surrounded by plenty of spots to grab a bite before or after your appointment, and lots of banks to grab cash since they are cash only. The DC USA (target/marshalls/etc.) parking lot is quite cheap, but you may be able to find street parking dependent upon the day/time. You walk down into the shop, so don't look for something on street level. Dr. Z is magical when it comes to line work, and I'm still mystified at how straight and smooth his linework is. I came in with a loose concept and he knocked it out of the park with design. In total, it was a 3.5-4 hour tattoo. Worth every cent! I will absolutely be back for more. read more

I've gone to Isaac at Laughing Hyena twice now and both experiences have been so positive and fun! Isaac is an incredible artist who listens to his clients. He makes it clear that he takes the design/placement process seriously and wants people to be thrilled with the tattoos they get. He designed and inked the octopus on my thigh, and over a year later I still regularly think about how much I love it, and how it looks even better than what I imagined in my head. (And for what it's worth, he works quickly without making things look or feel rushed.) The shop itself is really clean and friendly, and the staff at the front desk and on the phone are so helpful and kind. They helped my friend through their first ever tattoo experience without a shred of judgment or condescension (which, tbh, I have not always experienced in tattoo parlors). They're responsive and compassionate and take their work seriously while also creating a positive environment for one another and for their customers. I had the & for &pizza tattooed here. It was my first tattoo ever and Isaac was very informative and professional! The tattoo was only 3/4 inch and I don't even think it took over 5 minutes. I thought it was done extremely well and it's healing quite quickly (he put a medical wrap over it and told me to wash and put a+d ointment over it). This review is 3 years post getting pierced here by Tom. I got a nose & conch piercing when I visited DC from Chicago in February 2015. I was just starting to get into piercings and these two were my first piercings that were "out there" for me. Since getting these done, I have had horrible, horrible pain and problems with them (still 3 YEARS LATER). Since, I've gotten 7 other piercings...with no problems. I asked my piercer here in Chicago (25+ years experience) to take a look at my piercings pierced at Laughing Hyena. He let me know they were both pierced at horrible angles resulting in the problems I have with them. In total, I have 16 piercings, and these are the only two with issues. I have keloids on them that now have to be removed surgically. Super upsetting. I'm giving two stars because they were very nice in the shop. read more

The place was clean sand not too busy on a Saturday afternoon. All the employees were friendly and let off a good vibe. I got a palm sized tattoo of a claddah and Celtic knots. Overall: Incredible shop, hands down - best in DC. The staff are the friendliest, warmest and most welcoming individuals you will meet. They are extremely responsive and helpful. The shop is super clean and has a great vibe. You won't be sorry booking anyone from here for your first, second or 50th tattoo. They are all incredibly talented! Dr. Z: I now have 2 pieces done by Dr. Z and I am already thinking about my next one I am going to have him do. His talent is ridiculous. He may as well be a magician because his hands are magical. I don't think there is something he cannot do. Aside from his immense talent, Dr. Z is wonderful and puts so much pride in his work. He is a calming presence which, in my opinion, is a very important characteristic for a tattoo artist to have. This was a great tattoo experience! I wasn't getting one but I was with my friend the entire time he got his. Chris was his artist and from start to finish, you could tell how invested in his work that he was. My friend emailed a photo over and Chris ran with it! It looks absolutely amazing. Chris was extremely personable and made the experience that much better. I can't wait to come back and get one done by Chris for myself! 10/10 read more

I have 15+ piercings and I somewhat regularly need help changing jewelry that has fallen out. The shop is located near the Target and is terrace level with clear signage. It is cash only, so remember to stop by one of the nearby ATMs on your way over. This was the most pleasant experience I've ever had in a DC piercing/tattoo shop. I didn't catch the women's name at the front desk but she was pleasant and easy to work with. Rachel was the piercer and was super cheery, informed and just made the whole experience really comfortable. She was quick and gave me a card and encouraged me to contact her directly with any questions or concerns. A lot different than other shops where you get a little attitude. read more

I cannot sing the praises of the Laughing Hyena team enough! It would suffice that my new tattoo is stunning and beyond what I could have imagined. But there's so much more. Everyone who works there - Dr. Z (my tattoo artist), Isaac (tattoo artist), Emma (reception), and Thomas (piercing) were all incredibly welcoming and down to earth humans. It was an absolute joy to work with Dr. Z from conception to execution. I'm so happy my new art is on my arm so I could watch him create this permanent beauty on my body!
