This place is literally the worst place you can send your kid. It's in the middle of nowhere and the campus is sub-par. Definitely not worth the money and the education is only good in some majors, barely. I have had friends who have attended college here and they literally transferred half way through their first year because it was so isolating. From my own personal experience the people are not kind either. Greek life is also terrible. Kids die every year from hazing (I get it that other colleges experience this too) but WSU takes it to the extreme and then when the school finds out about it they only suspend the Greek community for like 6 months, then go about their business like nothing ever happened. Greek life should be shut down here if they can't even keep their students controlled enough to not KILL other students. Disgusting, save your money and go literally anywhere else. read more

My daughter and I came here for a campus tour and made the mistake of turning down a road, which unbeknownst to us, was Greek Row. It was enough to make my daughter not want to attend WSU. There were drunk and loud college kids stumbling around (at 8 pm) for as far as the eye could see. There was garbage strewn about for several blocks. It was actually unbelievable. Later in the evening after eating dinner we were in the area again and saw three different sets of paramedics tending to drunken students. What a drain on tax payers money. I am sure the community LOVES (insert sarcasm) funding the Greek Row in first responders time, policing, and garbage clean up. We tried not to let what we observed sway the decision to go on the formal tour the following morning but ultimately it did. The campus is very spread out with many hills. The surrounding town doesn't have big grocery stores or a place to get what you need as a college student. I am sure there are students who have a life besides partying and of course most schools have parties but what we saw was so over the top it made the decision to head east to University of Idaho easier. read more

The first time I ever came to Pullman, I fell in love with this place. The city, the school, EVERYTHING. I was in community college at the time and I just HAD to transfer AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I came to WSU with the sole purpose of attending the College of Communication to study advertising. It's one of the best in the nation. I came out here back in the beginning of Jan 07 (I think) with no real close friends, and lived in the BEST dorm Streit-Perham. I loved having the feeling of "going away to college" it makes your friendships out here stronger because you are all away from home. Soon your friends become like your family, or if you go greek like I did, you create your "home away from home." I wouldn't trade my college years here for anything. If there is one thing I learned at school - it's how to BLEED CRIMSON & GRAY. read more

Overall, this is a pretty good university. For such a rural, out of the way sort of place, there are actually a rather large and diverse amount of course offerings here. There are also huge amounts of activities available, no matter what your interest. Whether it be sports, theater, or some other interest you have, chances are there are great clubs that you can meet like minded individuals to enhance your college years. Also, if you are the type that likes pets, some of the best vets in the world work and teach right here. One knock. This campus has evolved with very little planning, so driving around campus is an utter nightmare. Walking and biking around campus are much smarter. This is my first semester at WSU and I regret my decision. Every single thing that I am required to do such as registering for classes become a multiple month process of no one being able to help me or tell me what is going on. I feel like I am constantly being told the wrong thing or passed onto someone else who also doesn't know what is going on. I applied to WSU clearly stating what my major would be and then in my first semester of that major I was told the major would be taken out and so now I have to take a bunch of extra classes to be a full time student because I can only take one class towards my major a semester. If you want a school to party and do little else than WSU is that school. If you want an education and to meet friends then please apply elsewhere and don't waste your time or money here. read more

I'm a transferred student in WSU and honestly this school has no care for students. I studied 2 years in WSU and my experience is the following: -Most dorms are terrible - a majority of the south side is really old and barely taken care of - the food is bad and expensive , the only good food are fast food restaurants -there is barely NO activities to promote STUDENT ENGAGEMENT. The few available are not free (WSU charges extra fees for everything) -Pullman is a ****hole the only good thing are the professors, yet depending on your major they can be really bad. Also If you decide to go to Pullman and you are a men be prepared to join a Fraternity and pay $1000 for semester because they are everything WSU invests in student engagement. read more

I guess you just have to have a "taste" for a place like Pullman. The education is not stellar. Even as I wrap up my degree, I'm still in classes with 50-100 students, with impersonal (and sometimes incompetent) professors. As for "not being in the middle of the city," that's not even true. WSU is in the very center of Pullman-- it just happens to engulf 2/3rds of the town. And beyond that? Wheat fields. Like wheat? Move to Pullman! Like culture? Zoos, museums, art, festivals, foreign cuisine, aquariums, fairs? Stay far, far away. Do NOT transfer here from another school! Because of the mandatory stay in the dormitories, every student on campus is either best friends with all the people they met as freshmen in the dorms (and not looking for new friends), they're freshmen (trying desperately to make friends with people in their dorm), or they're very lost transfer students. This place smacks of elitist bullshit. The professors and the education are mediocre, too. My professors are full of themselves, ineffective, and set in their ways. I had a much better experience at my community college, where I actually learned something about the topics and myself. There's too much drinking, too many frats/sororities, tuition is a rip-off, the public transit is awful. The weather is miserable-- blistering hot in the summer, and it snows from October to April (good luck with those HILLS), not to mention the incessant WIND (welcome, ladies, to NEVER having a good hair day. Ever again). There are NO jobs in town, either. There's literally nothing to do. I tried joining clubs, and found them to be even more cliquey than the general public. There is ONE amazing thing about WSU-- how hot the students are. At this point, I'm sticking around to see the sexy men run around shirtless in August and September. I came, I saw, I conquered. And I was miserable; I don't recommend this university. Ironically, I didn't go to the UW because I wanted a different experience and so I left Seattle. To come here, where nothing happens and nothing changes except the tuition jacks up. read more

They do not pay you what they say they are going to pay you. They offer high wages, only to take them all by choosing a high insurance and then charging you for parking and use of the facilities, even if you don't use them. So your pay gets broken down to less than Idaho's minimum wages. WSU promises at least $16/hour but you get paid $6.25/hour after they take all your money for their crap. I came to Washington State University because on the surface, its programs were exactly what I was looking for, but it wasn't until I actually got here that I discovered the plethora of problems from which this university suffers. The bottom line is the university is struggling so heavily financially that education is sacrificed in favor of the big moneymakers: sports and research. In some cases, departments have become so income-oriented that you have research professors unwillingly conscripted into teaching courses, rather than educators that also do research. As a result, there's a strong air of dispassion for teaching, and students suffer under professors that are genuinely unconcerned about their success. Mind you, this isn't all-inclusive. I have had courses with several phenomenal professors that genuinely give a damn, but for the most part I truly regret my decision to come to Washington State University expecting a "world class" education, as their tagline promotes. read more

This is the best college town ever. As a student here I appreciate all that is around me. The students are friendly, the school offers a plethora of amenities, and the school really tries to find ways to help the students improve academically while giving them a fun experience. WSU is ranked high for a public institution and I can understand why. If you want a college town feel, have the college experience, and meet great people who want to see you succeed, this is the school for you. If you are looking for a commuter school in the city, then this is NOT the place for you. I love this school and have never once regretted being here. Only concern is walking. If you don't like walking up hills, well, better get used to it. Everyone gains what we call "Cougar Calves" by the end of the year so it is quite a workout when rushing to your next class. Ok, so my freshman year was during COVID when classes were online so it was hard at first, but now I love it. WSU offers an insane amount of activities, facilities, and clubs. There is a place for literally anyone on this campus as long as they are willing to go out there and find it. WSU is frustrating at times, but overall they offer an awesome college experience. I've also noticed that some of these reviews have simply been used to trash on Greek life. Kind of seems like the people writing these reviews have never actually been a part of the Greek community, so I don't feel they have an accurate or trustworthy view seeing that they haven't actually experienced it and are simply judging it from the outside. I mean someone claimed that someone "dies every year" because of hazing which is a flat out lie and if this does occur the whole community mourns and the chapter is held accountable because we all know that is unacceptable and a horrible thing. No one says Greek life is perfect and a lot of members have been working to improve it each year, but I think the positives of Greek life are continually overlooked and ignored by people, especially ones who are not a part of it. I've met a lot of my best friends through Greek life and have had a lot of amazing opportunities and fun times, all while working a fun campus job and maintaining high grades. To reiterate, I'm not saying Greek life is perfect, but it's not nearly as bad as some people want you to think and offers a ton of positives; opportunities, and fun people. Oh, and most people in Greek life don't fall into typical stereotypes and it's a shame to see people, again usually not in Greek life, judge students just because they are in a chapter. read more

Alright so I am a senior Coug, so keep in mind I'm not an overly enthusiastic freshman with rose colored glasses. I give my personal experience a 5/5 because of the love I have for the University and what I've gained from my time as a student so far. But this review does include criticisms and acknowledgements of what I think highschool seniors thinking about WSU should evaluate for themselves. Here's my run-down of WSU: (4/5)Dorms: DO YOUR RESEARCH! Some dorms (Rogers, Streit-Perham and Stephenson) are all freshman dorms and will likely be a toss up: either the best or worst depending on your personality. They are cheaper and have a more fun atmosphere, but theft and mischief are real.Honestly, I recommend the male only and female only halls. Medium community and medium quality. The newer halls are great quality, usually poor community. Rich kids, mostly. (3/5)Food: Not bad. Could be better. Find your favorites and just eat them. Fill the gaps with Walmart food. (4.5/5)Facilities: Clean, state of the art, in most places. All of the main building are pretty great! I spend a lot of time studying on campus and have 10+ options of places to go. The Rec (gym is amazing! Make sure to go!) I've always liked mine, but some of the science buildings are older. (4.5/5)Education: Mine was great (I am in the com and bus colleges). Professors are all pretty wonderful, with a few exceptions. But some peoples' educations were just okay. I would go into more detail but I don't know enough about the other colleges at the University. One negative is that 90% of my classes have been lectures of 100 or more people. (5/5)Transportation: ACTUALLY AMAZING. Learn the bus schedule and use it. Sometimes it can be a bit of a longer wait or packed on the bus. But it's easy to get around most of the time. (4/5)WSU Community: pretty great, depending on your personality. It gets wild in a few areas. I do not recommend Greek Row at night for more reserved folks, but you'll always be safe. The Greek system can get pretty annoying and pervasive. You'll see Greek letters everywhere, but you get used to it and you don't need to join a frat or sorority to make friends. But if you hate everything about the Greek system and don't want to be around it, you'll have a hard time. It's not hard to make friends and loads of clubs to join. If you try to find friends, you will usually be able to make them. Everyone is fairly nice. The type of people who you can ask for directions or get random compliments from. Football season can be crazy, so traveling around the stadium is gonna be difficult. It's not for everyone, but 85% of people who go here wanting to like WSU, probably will. (3.5/5)Pullman: A good, solid college town. Cheap, small and friendly. The locals are great and put up with a lot of student bullshit. You do get your four seasons. But I hope you like amazon, because you can't shop a lot in the city, including clothing! It's certainly livable, but not a big city. If you're in a major that requires internships, that's something to keep in mind because you will likely have to move and try to get credits for a big internship. read more

It was Summer 2001, right before my senior year of HS. My family and I were galavanting throughout the state of Washington...UW, WWU, EWU, Gonzaga and even Evergreen were stops on this whirlwind tour. As we all know, however, once you see Pullman, you just get this feeling... It wasn't the look of the CUB, or the 'walk uphill both ways' elevation, no not the fact that the Butch was the name of the mascot...but somehow, WSU called out to me, like a beacon in the night. "Apply here...be a coug..." So, I did - I only applied here and Western; when the acceptance letters came in, I got Western's first, WSU's shortly afterward. I planned on pursuing COM, I wanted to go to a bigger (but not huge) school - I look good in Crimson...hah! Decision was a no-brainer. And so, the legacy began. I spent 4 glorious years here, all on campus, living (and working) in Streit-Perham, Stephenson East, McCroskey and Gannon-Goldsworthy. By the time Spring 2006 rolled around, I earned my diploma and moved off the Palouse, only to return a few months later...to move my little sister in to her new home in Regents! She's now in Pharm school and rockin' the SRC teaching Zumba! So...moral of the story?? GO COUGS! read more

My daughter and I visited the school and took the campus tour yesterday. The campus is beautiful and looked like a world class university (similar in feel & topography as UCLA); had all the proper departments, shiny brochures, well manicured lawns, brand new stadium, brand new fitness center, etc., all the things that would lure any prospective student and paying parent. Go Cougs! Then we took the actual tour. Our "tour guide" was friendly, chipper senior who majors in marketing & branding. She talked about the campus, the stadium, football games, how all students can attend all the home games for a single annual fee. Talked about entertainments and concerts. Our first stop was the stadium. Thank goodness it was in the shade cuz the temperature was hovering below 100F! Then stairs, and hills, more stairs, more hills. I started to feel faint and annoyed at this kid. Does she not see we parents (no spring chicks) are hacking, panting and sweating profusely need to rest every now and then?! Did I mention she's originally from Las Vegas (which explains her complete nonchalance at the outside temperature which at this point was starting to give me boils & blisters)?! I'm from LA, nobody walks in LA! Then she finally takes us indoors to air conditioning! Shows us where the library is, the Apple store, the student store where one can get all the WSU cougar gear, blah, blah. I was hoping she would just let us spend 15 minutes or so to get souvenirs before moving on. Nope. Moving on. Outside. More hills, more heat. I saw her mouth moving but at this point my brain stopped accepting anymore blah blahs about sports and Greek life and fun. I looked down at the manicured lawn and I see a used condom and wrapper!!! On the lawn! Students must really enjoy themselves at this school! I have two college bound kids and I'm not going to pay for them to enjoy themselves! I want them educated and given a fighting chance to enter high paying careers. I spoke to a "department head" and some students on campus. They know a lot about campus life but not much on academia. Not much on mentoring. Not much on internships. Not much on support by WSU for graduates entering the workforce. Based on the tour, the distance, the isolation and difficulty getting in/out of town, I'm convinced my kids will NOT be attending WSU Pullman, at least not on my dime. Oh, did I mention my kid & I both suffered heatstroke from the tour?! Nope and nopers! read more

Small town, BIG school. Lots of school spirit here. Everyone loves to be a coug! Words cannot describe how much I have loved going to school here.There are so many smiling faces. Cougs are always willing to help out fellow cougs. The love here is contagious. Everyone who has gone here knows what it's like to enjoy a scoop of Ferdinand's. Everyone has watched a Cougar Football game despite the icy weather. Everyone has gained calves of steel from walking up the endless hills. Nicest major college campus I've ever been through....it's not parked in the middle of downtown anywhere. It's a well-kept, landscaped hill basically surrounded by farmland. Every point on campus is accessible by walking from any other point. And, as an added bonus, because it's a land grant school, it's on land that was basically un-farmable in the 1880s. So, no matter where you're going, it's probably uphill. This is a highly effective means of eliminating the "Freshman 15". It's not urban, so entertainment options are limited, but the basics are there...and since every college student requires it, there's a liquor store and one of the biggest walk-in beer coolers I've ever seen, as well as several taverns and bars. Academically, well...it varies, just like every other school. Some departments are good (Communications, Business, Pharmacy, Vet school), others....not so much (Physics....instruction is NOT their priority) It's not a fit for everyone...but what college is? Five stars may be excessive, but it should balance out the useless rant of the other joker here, and give a rating that's much closer to being fair. (by the way, it's "Wazzu") The best way to say it is to quote one of our old football coaches: "I can't define it. I can't tell somebody who isn't a Cougar what it's like. There's something that happens at Washington State, you quietly and subtly become infected...Washington State is a passion. Being a Cougar is a passion." read more

I received an excellent education in the College of Pharmacy and have been rewarded with a good paying, meaningful career since graduation. My brother, son, and daughter in law also attended WSU and love the university as much as I do and received excellent educations. I laugh as I read some reviews (it got hot on a tour--yes WSU is in eastern Washington and it does get hot during the summer-see map) (I took a wrong turn and got lost because it's so isolated--yes, it's a land grant university. This campus is gorgeous! Pullman is such a small town that the center of their community is this university. They even have their logo in the middle of their intersections surrounding the campus, as far as saw. Fun Fact: Pullman only has 19 stop lights. I was here for a conference and I really enjoyed this campus. It had oldish looking buildings, but inside they are pretty new looking. Their "student union" like building is huge and has a lot of food choices, even a bar! Their library was very nice, but very old school. Apparently they are very famous for their broadcast journalism program there. Glenn Johnson is the mayor of the town, a professor at the school, the "voice" of the cougars at sports events, and pretty much the overall hero of this town. He gave us a speech at our conference there and he does everything in that town and still manages to smile and love every minute of it. Though I would never live there because it is way to cold for my Las Vegas blood, but it is a great campus and a great small town. I do not know how campus life is because I was there on a weekend, but I would visit again if I had the chance. read more

Washington State University is a beautiful college campus in Pullman, Wash. It sits on a hill and for most classes you're going to have to go uphill to get to them, enter the awesome Cougar calves! I may be a little bias but I think they have a wonderful College of Communication (named after alumni Edward R. Murrow). When I was doing research on universities for their communication programs, and especially public relations, WSU ranked pretty high. Plus the Cougar spirit can't be beat. We may have our slumps but that in no way quiets a Coug, if anything, it makes us put more of our hearts into cheering. The wins feel all the better for it. Football is great to watch, basketball is a fun time, volleyball is quite the experience and baseball is nice and relaxing. Go Cougs! read more

I wish I had the gymnast body.. well, I do, but it is a bit surrounded with umm Seattle good eats! I am wearing the results of the last Apple Cup. I was getting my hair cut during the double overtime and the stylist g t excited and then WWHHAATTTT !! A big hunk of hair on the floor!! My professors were well-qualified. My studies excellent. Spanish speakers are often incredulous at my grammar knowledge.. all those nights staying up late translating stories paid off! And a job at Pizza Haven.. my introduction to making pizza after hours! I love WSU. It was really the best university I could've gone to. Everything in this town is an experience. There is something so exciting that comes with learning to be independent, and navigating through things on your own that I felt I would only get here at WSU! I wanted to apply here over UW because I wanted the college-town feel. Everything here is convenient! Winco in Moscow, ID is a 10/15 minute drive away--much better place to get groceries than Walmart. And then Walmart in Pullman is also really close. Idaho has more stores, so it's kind of nice to take your car with you to campus so you have easy accessibility to get around in Pullman or Moscow. Everything in Pullman is within a 10-minute radius if you drive. It makes things really easy compared to living in the city. As for partying here, it's really what you make it. I think that if you seek the resources out here, show professors you care and get involved on campus, it's highly likely you will succeed! In that case, partying probably won't be the focal point of your time here. I enjoyed going out, and loved the craziness of WSU on the weekends. However, it didn't have any impact at all on my grades. I don't think a college tour with parents is enough to suffice. Obviously this place won't be for everyone, but if you have any friends who attend you should stay a weekend with them by yourself. It's a completely different experience when you get to explore the campus of on your own. Lastly, I can't say how many professors made an impact on my education. I think I enjoyed classes more since I had so many caring, supportive professors here. I got involved with teaching assisting and research, and I loved it. The Coug network is a great one!! WSU is really a special place!! I can't say enough about how much I recommend it. read more

My little brother who is taller and smarter than me and my older brother...is going to be a Dr. in just a few months, because WSU turned what UGA first established as a BIO man into a very very very very smart researching/scientist/Phd MAN...that is Doctor to you...so yeah WSU deserves the Woohoo! Back in 2008 when I was seriously contemplating going into non-profit management, I chose to enroll in the WSU Volunteer Management certificate program. Unfortunately, shortly after I had signed up for the "full series" package, my grandmother feel ill. I wasn't able to complete my first course in the allotted time and had to call the university staff for an extension. That's when I found out that the program was being canceled. The program was canceled at the end of 2008. The program contact, Linda Kildew, told me that at the time, they hadn't worked out a "process" for student refunds or credits - just that someone would be evaluating my progress (which was nonexistent, since shortly after I started the program I was informed by the instructor that "this program isn't for you") and that they would make some sort of a determination (issue certificate anyway, or find a way to do some sort of refund - apparently the university was dumb enough to pay the instructors the full four course tuition upfront, despite the fact that course had to be taken in sequence and there was a more than likely chance that students may not finish the program). Once again, that was in 2008. It's 2010. It's been a year of on and off harassment by me to Ms. Kildew via email and voicemail. 90% of the time, I don't get any sort of response. Responses are best solicited when I call and call and call... Most recently, I emailed Linda on Dec 14 and Dec 21. When I finally got ahold of Linda on the phone on Dec 28, I was told that she had forwarded my information *again* to the instructors/committee (whatever they've been named this time) to evaluate my course progress. I am deeply confused as to why she never emailed me back to tell me that she had done that - and it appears that she does not she follow up on any of these supposed emails to the instructors. I shouldn't have to call her for her to tell me that she forwarded my information - details should've come back to me when she did that (if in fact it was ever done; the lack of response and follow-up makes me think that she just deletes the messages). During said phone call was I informed that "some instructors have allowed some students to continue the program." Funny, no one made that option available to me. In fact, it strikes me weird that not ALL students were allowed to continue if they had enrolled prior to the program's cancellation since it sounds like instructors got all the money upfront anyway. I get that there have been all sorts of budget cuts to schools and staff are strapped for time and probably doubling up on their duties, but this is ridiculous - absolutely ridiculous. In all honesty, if they aren't going to give me money back or give me some sort of account credit to take other classes via WSU online (I'll be honest, I don't think I ever want to do any sort of business with these people ever again at this point.), I'm okay with that. Someone just needs to make that clear. I just want this resolved at this point, but apparently that is too much to ask. * I would also like my name removed from the Portland State non-profit program mailing list. I find it very shady that the instructor from my first course was allowed to take my personal email address (which I used when I registered for my course) to her new school without my consent. read more

It's been a challenge for many colleges due to covid but WSU has gone online and yet the faculty that teach don't appear to be prepared to teach online. They don't grade the homework, they base tests on only a few questions and they don't tell you what the style of test will be until the day of. They don't grade labs until the end of the entire semester. You never know how you are doing grade-wise until the very end. Many of the classes are really taught poorly and they spend time teaching the easy stuff which means math calculations and ignore the material that might be useful. If you can wait to start college elsewhere or start at a local community college it would be probably cheaper and better than starting at WSU. I know this sounds harsh but all of these issues have happened. WSU might be fine non-covid but during covid this is a tough spot to be. The faculty might be over-whelmed, I'm sure they probably are, but it doesn't address the lack of material and education for the students. read more
