This place appears on lists of top places for jewelry repairs. So, I decided to stop by and bring some broken items I have - two pearl necklaces and a pearl ring. The front door was locked, so I had to speak with someone on an intercom to be buzzed in. I then think there was another door that I also had to be allowed in. Once inside, I found a totally empty place except for a woman at a reception desk. I asked her if they repaired jewelry, and she said they did. So, I pulled out my pieces to show her. The next thing I know another woman is standing next to me and looking me over. I told her that I had some pieces that I was looking to have fixed. Without looking them over, holding them, examining them, inquiring about them or anything, she announced it would be $99 for each piece because that is what they charge for everything. $99 per repair! That struck me as so strange! I'm used to bringing my items to jewelers, having them examine them and discuss them with me, and then receiving a call within a day or two with a quote. How can you give a quote for a piece without having any idea of what work and parts are needed to repair it or even what the customer is looking to have done? I really got the vibe that she was acting this way intentionally because for whatever reason she had no interest in fixing the jewelry. I mentioned that one of the necklaces broke shortly after I had it repaired from another place, and she told me I should just take it back to them. I don't think she was trying to save me money. I think she was trying to get rid of me. It was a really weird and uncomfortable experience. So, I just bagged up my belongings and left the store. I cannot recommend Washington Diamond enough! My fiance and I went to Washington Diamond after it was recommended by a friend, and we happily decided to get my engagement ring there after meeting with Walter. The entire process was unbelievably smooth - Walter was extremely knowledgeable and kind, and I felt that we were in very good hands from the beginning! I never felt at any point in time that he was trying to upsell us, and I felt very comfortable that he was answering our questions honestly without focusing on profit. The ring ended up being very reasonably priced! I wanted a non-traditional ring - one with small, non-diamond gemstones. Walter was extremely supportive, and helped design a (custom) ring that is absolutely gorgeous! I mentioned an interest in emeralds, and Walter suggested an alternative - tsavorite garnets - that are a gorgeous color of green, and more resistant to damage. He called around to a number of places to source the stones, and ended up finding something extremely lovely. The whole process was as easy as it possibly could have been - Walter maintained communication at different stages of design, and I ended up getting the finished product about three weeks after our initial appointment. I went to Washington Diamond today to get a diamond ring repaired. I never even got in the door to have a person look at the ring. When I buzzed the door, she asked me what I wanted. When I said I needed to have a ring repaired, she said i should go down the street to another jeweler. When I said they'd been recommended to me, since the repair involved replacing a missing diamond, she said their goldsmith shop was really busy and backed up. I responded that clearly they didn't want my business, and thanked her for her time. Really?? You couldn't even have this conversation in person, but rather over the speaker at the front door? I'd never recommend this business. I am NOT a newlywed looking for a bridal set, so maybe they she just didn't think I was worth their time. Caveat emptor. read more

Their prices are very competitive and they only deal with GIA-certified diamonds. I considered buying an engagement ring from an online site because prices are 10-20% lower, but decided not to. It was important for me to be able to see the diamond and setting with my own eyes, and it was also important for me to buy from a reputable, well established local vendor. One big plus for me is their use of information technology, which has many benefits. Their products are listed online and can be referenced by product code - this is how I chose my setting. They can schedule appointments online and send reminders via email. They have a record of items you looked at, in case you decide to come back later. They also provide sample invoices with price and details about products you are interested in so you can take it out of the store and compare it with other retailers! Another benefit is that they have on file the insurance appraisal of your diamonds, which they emailed to me a few days after my purchase. The employees at Washington Diamond are very professional and not pushy. They let me see what I asked for and only gave recommendations when I asked questions. I recommend coming in during the day - they have skylights that make the diamonds sparkle really well so you can see them in their full glory. Buying at a local vendor has benefits too. For one thing, they offer free regular inspection and cleaning services for their products for the life of the product. Resizing was simple since all I had to do was come back to the store - they had all my account information already and quickly took the ring in for resizing. Another benefit is knowing that since it's a well established brick and mortar store, they can't screw you over and leave - this is important when buying a high price product. Their selection is good, but I think it would be better if they had more to choose from. I think all their settings are custom made on site by their goldsmiths. The diamond I ended up getting appeared to have very high quality for its grade (to my untrained eyes). I got an H color SI1 clarity diamond, and to me it appeared clear and I couldn't see any inclusions with the jewelers loupe, so to me it was effectively "flawless" without a loupe. Overall I would definitely recommend Washington Diamond. You may pay a bit higher than some places, but to me it's worth it. read more

The prices are fair, not as competitive with on-line places (or smaller local places) but definitely better prices than a big box retailer like Mervis. I thought the prices of their platinum settings were very good (better than other places). It's a good place for a "one stop shop" experience. We saw a couple of stones we liked but selection was limited due to our budget (which actually was a decent 5 figured one albeit on the low 5 figure side). A couple of SI1s and G/H (1.2-1.3 carat range). We kept looking because we felt that with our budget we could get a little more for the money. We ended up buying our stone from a family friend and got something close to 1.40 carats, VS2 clarity, and triple excellent) for the same price as a 1.2/SI1/H color offered to us by WD. read more

I felt that Washington Diamond had the best setting selection for the price. Craig provided additional education on diamond color (he showed us how to see the yellow in a diamond on white paper), clarity & cut (sparkle), and diamond location. We weren't sure if we would purchase the ring here after our visit. Craig kept in touch with us via email to ensure that all our questions were asked. My finance later surprised me with the ring over New Years Eve last year. I was expecting it later this year. He ordered it in October and the ring was ready in 2 weeks. I took it to Washington Diamond and they took a look at it- only for me to learn that the stone had chipped, which was why it fell out of its setting. I had a great experience at Washington Diamond buying my wedding band. They have great prices, high quality, and a huge selection. I found a number of unique items I hadn't found anywhere else. It's frustrating sometimes that they work only on appointment, but it makes sense because then the salesperson is devoted to you. I didn't feel any pressure to buy. I even was considering having them make me a ring I had designed instead of buying a ring pre-made but they talked me out of it, even though the self-designed ring would have been way more expensive. All of the staff there are nice, but Tom especially deserves a shout out on Yelp! for being a great non-nonsense salesman. I had had a lot of trouble looking for wedding rings because all the big chains seem to have the same items and all the boutiques seem to have the same huge mark-ups. I had looked up the rate of gold/gram already and the quote received was abusive. When I questioned it, the guy (not Tom) was a bit belligerent. Anyway, then he re-calculated and brought the amount up almost $1K. My radar was pinging though, so I took my gold someplace else and they paid me $800 over the increased quote.
