A year later, with the company claiming multiple failed attempts at recovery, I asked them to return the hard drive, and on the basis of excellent reviews, decided to take a chance with Utah Data Recovery, if for no other reason than to confirm my data was not recoverable. Within 24 hours, I had been contacted by UDR, who asked me to provide all the information I could on what had happened. They even tried multiple times (not surprisingly unsuccessfully) to contact the California company to try to ascertain what they had done to the drive. At the end of December, it was stepped on and there was a single crack across the screen. We took it to these guys to fix at the beginning of January. In order to fix it, the whole screen component had to be replaced. They ordered the first screen, and it was not touch screen... but in their attempt to remove the screen, they cracked the screen even more and you can clearly see where they were prying it away from the back. It looked horrible. But we said it won't be like that for long because they said they would order the correct touch screen this time and replace it. Fast forward 3 months later. The screen is still not fixed. They must have ordered 9 or 10 different screens and none of them were the correct one. In addition, the screen is even worse off than before, there are chunks of glass missing from the screen and additional pry marks, cracks and scraps. Not to mention any time we went in to drop off the computer they all seemed like they were stoned... We finally called it quits on them after they repeatedly screwed up, broke our laptop even more than it was when we took it in and were so incomprehensibly incompetent. Some of the other reviews say they were great for fixing a battery or other minor fixes, that any hobo with basic computer knowledge would be able to fix, but when it comes to an actual real repairs they are absolutely inept and unprofessional.

I searched multiple ratings and found CCW Technology rated very well and looked to be affordable and trustworthy. I brought my computer in and met with Allen and Angie. Allen grabbed some testing equipment and checked for a few common problems to see if he could get me up and running while I waited. Allen found and showed me a small resistor/chip that blew on my motherboard. I left my computer with CCW and they took care of everything. CCW got my replacement motherboard and had me back up and running like nothing happened. The price was very affordable and the turnaround time was quicker than expected. I also appreciated that CCW sent me update emails, letting me know when the new part arrived and the status of the repair. If I should have any other problems CCW will be my fist call.

DO NOT make the mistake of dealing with them! They appear to be local, but they require you to send your drive out of state. Since the turn around time and the inconvenience was stupid, I decided to shop around. Fortunately I found Allen's company. He really is local and he is highly capable! Even in this crazy time of social distancing, he was able to arrange to evaluate the drive the same day that I called him. The other company had given me a "ball park" estimate of $500.00 to $1650.00 and a turn around time of 4-6 weeks. Allen's estimate was $134.00! Which also included him "cloning" my data on to an SSD that I provided to him. The best part was that he was able to finish the repair the next day. My computer now works fine and boots faster than when it was brand new! I very much recommenced this company for all your data recovery needs! So what about Secure Data? They followed up with me today to see if I was still interested, and when I told their rep my story, she proceeded to disparage Allen's company, saying that I was lucky that it was such a simple fix because if he had had to open the drive he would have ruined it. The other day someone actually asked me if I was using a brand new computer after the fans/ keyboard/screen was cleaned at Computech. Service is always super fast and thorough. I don't know anything about computers, including my own laptop and these guys will never make you feel silly (As a woman, going into other tech shops, this is a common issue for me). Earlier this year, when my boyfriend was getting his computer "checked up", the tech noticed signs that the fans were close to dying - Computech got into contact with us and offered to order and install the fans.
