For some time now I had been walking on the sidewalk of Market Street in the heart of Downtown Roanoke and passing by this Japanese Sushi restaurant called Wasabi's, and today to my surprise, I had the good fortune, that one of my best friends invited me there for dinner. We parked in a nearby parking garage next to the ORVIS store on Campbell Ave. When we arrived to the restaurant it was already open with its lively and colorful neon lights turned on behind the two large windows in of the restaurant's front. They read: "WASABI'S JAPANESE FOOD SUSHI BAR." As we entered the restaurant through the center door, it was not too full, but by the time we ate and left, very few empty tables were left. Right after we were inside the restaurant, that was decorated very simple but tastefully, the Host came out and greeted us with a friendly smile and took us tour our table where he handed us each a menu. We just ordered iced water to drink. Before even looking at the menu, I examined the restaurant, especially the Sushi Bar, where one of the Chefs was preparing a Sushi plate of who's name I can't remember but of which I posted a photo with my review. The friendly host showed me around the Sushi Bar, as the Chef carefully prepared the Sushi plate. When it was time to order, I orordered a California Roll Maki dish as apappetizer and my friend ordered an Unagi Roll dish. For our main entrée we both ordered a Yakiudom Ultimate from the Kitchen Prepared Entrées. They both came with Miso Soup and House Salad with Ginger dressing. Both the soup and salad were very fresh and tasty, as well as our Sushi appetizers. When our main entrée arrived, It did so very hot. The pan fried Japanese noodles looked and tasted very good and were a nice size portion, but the shrimps were very tiny, the beef was a bit tough, and the pieces of chicken a bit dry. It's a pitty because the quality of the ingredients of a dish is a principal factor in the final success of that dish. As a constructive feedback to the owners of this restaurant, I sincerely wish that they look into this, because making this change will definitely earn this restaurant the 5 Stars. For dessert we each ordered an Ice Cream Tempura that we're two scoops of ice cream each, with one of the scoops fried and both with chocolate syrup swirls all over the top. They tasted very good; especially the batter with which the ice cream was covered before it was fried. If you like Sushi. I definitely recommend this restaurant to you. The atmosphere is very warm and cozy, the Sushi Bar is amazing with excellent Sushi Chefs, and the host and servers are very attentive and friendly. read more

Wasabi's is an excellent sushi restaurant and is located right in the center of downtown Roanoke. The staff was very attentive, polite, and gracious. They promptly told us our table had a time limit and when we needed to vacate, which was reasonably and no problem meeting. They gave us a lovely booth and served us right away. The staff approached us right after putting down our menus, so we never had to wait very long. They brought us ice water right away and refilled our glasses two times during the meal, so I could never find the bottom of my glass. This is a somewhat small restaurant, so don't expect a ton of space around your table and you may struggle to get a table at peak meal times. I enjoyed the simple framed pictures of sumo wrestlers and other classic Japanese themes. I thoroughly enjoyed the salad and soup that came with our meal - their garden salad is above average and the miso soup was about what I'd expect. The agedashi tofu appetizer was not somewhat bland, but tasted fresh and what you should expect from tofu. The fish itself was VERY flavorful and came in BIG portions. I had never seen pieces of sashimi or nigiri so large. The sushi at Wasabi's was as good as the fish I ate in Tokyo and New York. Each piece was tasty, delicious, washed down with wasabi and ginger, and I found each one a delightful mouthful that left me wanting more. I would strong recommend ordering one of the 'party boats' because it has better value in terms of fish per dollar, at the risk of having less control of what food you receive and having to share with others in your party. Being from the nova area, I can't say I had high hopes for Roanokes sushi scene, however I can genuinely say that I get cravings for wasabi's when I go back home. You get huge portions (for sushi) and really good quality fish. Their hibachi isn't my favorite personally, especially the teriyaki sauce, however their sushi makes up for it tenfold. They have a great sushi and hot entree selection so everyone always had a great lunch even if they didn't order sushi. Not a fan. I ordered emperor's deluxe ultimate and my friend orders the fried udon. The sashimi and the fish on top of the sushi are very inconsistent in terms of quality. Some of the fish is fresh, some of the fish seem to be in the fridge/freezer for a very long time that the texture is hard and chewy in a weird way. Really good sushi in Roanoke! This is a super nice little spot. There's a huge selection of sushi and other Japanese dishes! We always get the "Love Potato" appetizer and it's the best! Just had a wonderful lunch at Wasabi's. When I arrived I was sat at a table right away and was quickly met by my server Katie. I explained to her that I was still fairly new to sushi and had some questions about the menu. She was extremely helpful and led me toward a couple different options to choose from. She certainly led me right because my lunch, the maki lunch combo with miso soup, was incredible, so kudos to her for explaining the options for me. Pretty decent sushi place. I'm a vegetarian, so it's always hard finding a good sushi place with veggie options. Wasabi's had a lot. My faves include the brocolli tempura rolls, the sweet potato tempura rolls, and their spicy vegetarian maki. They even have a great vegetarian lunch special that I highly recommend trying. Portions are decently sized for the price you are paying. Tempura ends up being super filling and hearty. Would definitely come here again for the sushi.
