When I lived in WNY I was so spoiled to have this gem! This is one of the best for fresh sushi and sashimi around Elmwood! My boyfriend, our friends, and myself would specifically commute an hour to dine at this restaurant once a month, and we were never disappointed with the service and meals. Be grateful for the sashimi you order here; not only is it affordable but the cuts of fish are thick, fresh, and generous compared to nearly every other location available. Their appetizers are also delicious and made with finesse. The sake list is decent. I usually sealed my evening with a plum wine and mochi ice cream--an experience I highly recommend! Note that their dining area is a small space (they have outdoor seating but to hell with that in winter!), so it's best to beat the dinner rush and stop by for a late lunch or early dinner hour. I eat at wasabi a lot. It's a good spot to either grab takeout or grab a quick bite in the elmwood village. As far as the food goes, it's pretty good. Definitely not the best sushi in the world, but good spicy tuna, fresh fish, and plenty of options. Appetizers are good as well. Not great for larger parties due to the spatial limitations of the location but absolutely perfect for small groups, solo diners, or dates. I was here on a Wednesday evening after a spell at a local beer garden for dinner. The staff, in my experience, has always been on point, attentive, and quick. My partner in crime lost a chopstick to the floor and when I looked up a waitress was already on her way over with another pair. We tried the sushi for two and a Sunflower roll. The sunflower roll was cleverly plated which I didn't notice until we had already finished it. But, it had an asparagus sprig for a stalk with the mango slices atop the sushi in a circle. The sushi for two was an impressive spread. I wish I knew more about what exactly we were eating but it was all delicious and was the first time I had to take sushi home. Great atmosphere, great service, great food. A bunch of my friends and I stopped by Wasabi for a quick bite today. Wasabi is a small sushi place located in the heart of Elmwood Village. Wasabi has the usual lunch special that many sushi places have: 2 rolls for $6.95 and 3 rolls for $9.95, both options served with miso soup. Additionally, they have a few entree boxes that came with soup, salad and a California roll. We were seated right by the window. The whole place is small so at max seating capacity, it probably fit 20 people. There is additional outdoor seating for maybe another 10. The menu was simple and easy to read. I ordered three rolls: shrimp tempura, sweet potato tempura and the crunchy spicy tuna. My other three friends also ordered the 3 roll special. Everything came out fairly quickly and the food was good. One of my friends tried the mushroom and beef roll, which is a bit unorthodox as I have never seen anything like that on a sushi menu. I tried a piece of that and it was alright. My spicy tuna was good - not too spicy with just the right amount of kick. By the time we were done with our meal, the place was picking up with business. It seems like the prime location of Wasabi is keeping it opened. The food is good, but nothing particularly special. The service was also good - it was a bit difficult to tell because when you're one of two tables in the restaurant, it's hard to gauge how attentive and inattentive the server is. I would not mind returning to Wasabi for lunch again but I might venture to another place for dinner if I was feeling sushi. read more

No joke..I order takeout sushi from here about 4x a month. My favorites to order are the avocado tofu salad, the sunflower roll, and the spicy/crunchy crab rolls. One of my favorite little sushi places in the city. It is certainly a bit of a hole in the wall and is really cramped when it gets busy, but service is always fast and friendly. The prices here are killer for what you get, and the sushi rolls are made fresh right in front of your eyes. We tried a couple if different sushi rolls, miso soup, seaweed salad and some sake. Everything was great and it ended perfectly with the bowl is green tea ice cream that we ordered for dessert. Absolutely used to be one of my favorite sushi places but recently ordered take out and was seriously dissatisfied with not only the food but the customer service. I not only did not get one of the rolls that I had ordered and paid for and also got extremely sick after my meal. I called to clear up the issue and let them know as to hopefully prevent other customers from getting ill and was floored when they said that I was making up the food poisoning and that I was lying about not getting my complete order. Ventured out to Elmwood tonight for some sushi and I was not let down by this place! The place is very tiny when you walk in but quaint and well lit at the same time. I'm not a very exciting guy when it comes to ordering sushi as I am a fraud and simply order cucumber rolls and sweet potato rolls (along with miso soup of course). The soup was perfect and not to hot and I absolutely loved the rolls. The staff here was very quick to serve us and the prices were lower then most other places I have managed to venture too for similar rolls. Sometimes I get a roll that isn't well put together, which is disappointing considering how good I know they've done before. I frequent Wasabi pretty regularly considering it is a couple block from my home. I do mainly order take-out, however it is a nice place to take a lady on a date! It is intimate and small. I would suggest making a reservation, as it has a tendency to fill up occasionally. I've have only really dabbled with the sushi rolls, specially the spicy crunchy tuna and salmon. Sometimes they have brown rice and sometimes they don't. I think if you are a sushi place, you should never run out of rice, regardless of the color. On days when they have brown rice, I will order a roll or two. My last experience here was really disappointing, however very affordable. I ordered two rolls, a salmon and avocado and a tuna roll. The price came to $9 and change and was ready for me within 10 minutes of ordering. The meal came with miso soup as well. The restaurant itself is really tiny. The fish displayed at the sushi bar area looked like it had seen better days. The customer service wasn't the friendliest, just got a, "What is your phone number" and a, "Sign here" after running my credit card. The underwhelming experience continued from that point forward. Got home and the sushi was just so blah. The rolls fell apart after picking them up. They were not rolled well and ended up being a giant mess. The rice completely came apart from the roll. It was like someone did a rushed job, was not impressed. Nothing special about my meal. The soup was the best part. I absolutely loved this place! Good sushi is very hard to come by in Buffalo. I didn't have high expectations going in. The place is small but the food is definitely worth coming. Service was terrible. The waitress that served our table was rude when delivering our dishes and the waiter that gave us the bill was terrible at math. We had asked to split the bill per dish per person for the 5 of us. Unfortunately, he did not do it that way. It was a random dish split five ways and then some people's bills were so much higher than others for no reason. How do you split a bill and have one person only pay $4 and another person pay $22 when clearly everyone had a full dish?! However, food was exceptional! They provide very thick generous sashimi pieces for an affordable price. I was quite surprised! I would definitely come back for the food, not too sure about that service. read more

I'm from the D.C. area, I'm Korean with a background in Japanese, so if I'm giving a sushi place five stars, there really must be something special about this place, #amirite? Firstly, I want to mention that I am a woman dating a woman, we're both Korean-Americans, and we both love sushi. We walk into this place and we are immediately greeted by happy Asian people working here. Now, if you're not Asian, this might sound strange. But older Asians look down on younger Asians, younger Asians look down on Asians within the same age range, even most Asian employees to customers. On top of that, we're a female couple that shows PDA like any other couple! I love the izakaya feel, and it's always packed when we come here, but we always get seats. The service is fast and the presentation of the food is gorgeous! Their sushi is also just as amazing as the service. It's so fresh in fact, I wonder where they get it from! You can't eat at a place like this, especially not raw fish. If the bathrooms look like that I can't even imagine what the kitchen looks like - where the public can't see. What's totally unsettling is that cleaning the bathrooms is easy. Why not do it? Are the owners insane? If so, do you want insane people in charge of your raw fish? You don't have to train in Japan for a million years as a sushi chef to clean a sushi restaurant - just procure a roll of paper towel and a bottle of spray - even vinegar will do - and they have to have that. Wasabi is the first sushi place my girlfriend and I tried in Buffalo. Having lived in larger cities like Portland and Los Angeles, we weren't expecting the sushi in Buffalo to be amazing, but we were hoping to find a solid sushi place. We went to Wasabi for lunch and found that their lunch menu was a great deal. A sushi lunch for $8.50 each was a bargain. The waiting staff was nice and hospitable. However, when judging on the food itself, the restaurant fell short. To start off, the seaweed used to wrap the crunchy crab rolls our sushi lunches came with was stale. This made it so eating the roll was more of a chewing experience than a tasting experience. Onto the sushi, the fish quality was a little below average. The fish did not appear or taste fresh. The rice was done well, however, the fish to rice ratio was skewed since there was way too little rice to supplement the fish. Secondly, when eating the sushi, we found hair in our sushi. I could have overlooked the hair, except the skill in cutting the fish was also subpar as my fish would fall apart when I picked up the sushi (and I've been using chopsticks since I was a baby). All in all, the place is a good value if you aren't too big on sushi quality and want a slightly below average dining experience. As far as returning to wasabi, I will probably return only if I'm in a rush and have a sushi craving during lunch. read more
