I have to say the proprietors are a bit 'unusual' in that one might lose sight of a customer completely after a pigeon that just flew in 'ruined' the shop window, when this could be dealt with after having taken care of the customer. But I guess that only adds to the charm (if you're not in a hurry lol). This does not however diminish in any way the quality of their product. Their freshly roasted nuts are delicious, often still a bit warm when just after you bought them. They often have salted and NON salted versions of most nuts. They also have a nice selection of dried fruits and berries and if I remember correctly homemade peanut butter (I still have to try that one though). For a great selection of freshly roasted nuts, dried fruits and the like, this place will not disappoint you.

The owners are from Pampanga, which is renowned to be one of the foodie regions of the country. It's a land locked region that had a significant Spanish influence, so expect a lot of meats (pork, chicken and beef). Flavors tend to be savory, sometimes sweet and often rich. This is not diet food! If you want it spicy, ask for a side sauce to add to it - they'll happily oblige - but the food will not come spicy. It's just not part of the cuisine, the spice is added after. Particularly good at Mr Pinoy are: 1. Longanisa - sweet and savory sausage that is usually served with eggs and rice 2. Tocino - sweet and savory pork belly also served with eggs and rice. They also have a chicken version that I didn't try yet. 3. Bulalo - beef shank soup 4. Liempo - grilled pork belly 5. Crisy Pata - deep fried pork knuckle 6. Menudo - Stew with garlic, onions, diced pork, diced potatoes, soy sauce, vinegar, tomato sauce and some other ingredients To those familiar with Filipino cuisine, give them a call a head of time so you can find out what they're cooking for the day, or they can prepare what you like or get the grill fired up for fresh liempo. It's what makes it so pleasurable. The Gravenstraat, where it's located, is literally 10 feet across. The two benches attached to their front outer wall seats 8 comfortably and standing in the middle of the narrow street or against the opposing wall - with a drink - can bring them a hefty fine. So, they draw a line of demarcation (two feet in front of the benches) on the brick street with a piece of chalk which you are asked and required to stand behind. It just makes it all the more cozier. Inside, the bar seats 6-8 and the two tables, left and right of the door, seats 12-14. And that's it. Weather permitting, sitting on the benches is the best place to people watch in Amsterdam. Trust me.

They have a good international section with not only sauces and international processed foods but also raw foods. They even have yellow pea flour! What I really like about this place is that they have a wide array of organic products. I love my organic breakfast cereals, my favorite being plain rolled oats, and they have them here at a very decent price. They also have a bunch of Stevia products but you should always read the list of ingredients to see what kind of crap they add to it. It's all well and nice to say "100% natural", but so is feces, heroine and cocaine. So if you're health conscious enough to buy Stevia products, then also be wise enough to read the ingredients, as well. The place also has a bunch of Soma brand breads. Soma mostly makes those dense and mushy ryes and sourdough ryes. I emailed them to ask if they used any form of raising agents in their products and they let me know that all their products are 100% free from artificial raising agents and that they only use natural yeast and cultures as such. I'm not gonna cover every single category of what they sell but they have all the major brands and then some. So if you live nearby or if you know another Jumbo, give it a go!

But I must take issue with one of their rather unsavory business practices: I am of course referring to their notorious custom of using anthropomorphic Heineken glasses to serve the very same Heineken beer to guests. Try to imagine this existential horror (or if you can't, I've posted a picture to this review): a Heineken glass, suddenly granted sentience, and not a moment after this revelation of life and cognizance is forced to serve the very stuff that makes up himself to ravenous Heineken devourers. Imagine watching their wet lips smacking and slurping down by the glassful remnants of what was once your comrades, indeed, what was once yourself. Without a moment to wonder what any of all this makes you, or your place in this new world and new life, you are forced to stand by and watch as your non-sentient Heineken brothers are guzzled down and belched out by stranger after stranger, as they laugh and mock you while they note to their friends how much more delicious Heineken is once you drink it closer to the source. Imagine each transaction, each quaffing of the stuff, as another potential sentient Heineken, another possible friend, who knows, maybe another true love, another chance for contact with someone like you, who knows what you're going through and understands you, gone down the gullet of another callous drunkard stranger. Forced anthropomorphic-Heineken-glass labor is cruel, inhumane, and also inefficient. For all the harm it is causing them, there is in fact no real benefit to this practice compared to simply dispensing Heinken via human bartenders to guests. I therefore do encourage this place, and indeed all licensed establishments in the greater Amsterdam, to practice more ethical hiring practices regarding their anthropomorphic-Heineken-glass populace.
