The staff and practitioners outside of one person were great, but that one ruined my experience. I…read morehave 8+ years of grappling experience(mostly in collegiate wrestling). I had taken 2 years off from grappling and decided this would be a great place to try to do something I used to love. I did their 10-day trial and had an amazing time with instructors and students alike. Got to roll with their more experienced students. Pretty much got my ass kicked for 8 days, but it was great. I went in on my 9th day with the mindset that I would do something new. Instead of just going hard and trying to win, just survive and try to use what I am good at so that I can do better than just lying as flat as possible for 3 minutes. Insert the head instructor/gear/owner of the gym. He had been sick. First, we talked privately about my training and all seemed well. Then he allowed me to enter his more advanced class. I roll with someone of his choosing(who I had rolled with before, so we had a bit of an understanding of how the other person rolls). Immediately, we both stood up and I got to work wrestling. We go to the mat off of a botched takedown from me(just a bad single leg, we both fell). Afterwards, the head instructor called me over and proceeded to talk to me, telling me I needed to slow down(hard to hit a takedown if you're taking shots at a snail's pace and I had already slowed down the speed of my takedowns because I'm not going to try to slam someone or run them off the mat, saftey first) and as another student passed and gave me a compliment the instructor said and I qoute,"alright relax, I'm trying to bring his ego down a little bit". I was then no longer allowed to roll(nothing from the roll should have indicated that I was allowed to. I had trained with them for 8 days and received no complaints and talked to multiple students and instructors about their mat rules and courtesies). I asked him about what I was doing wrong and before I could finish explaining that I just wanted to learn more, then lying on my stomach and getting destroyed, he cut me off and said,"because you're just trying to win". I got my ass kicked for 8 days straight and allowed everyone to work their submissions and guards on me. I'm good at standing and I was punished for even attempting to use what I'm good at. Alaways suck at new things and to be told by students and other instructors that I'm doing fine and that I'm a great addition, then turned away by the head instructor really sucked. Especially if you're going to pay 200+ for their service. Hopefully, this is a one-time experience and everyone else has a wonderful time because EVERYONE else was a joy.
