A rarity in New York--better (and cheaper!) than therapy! So what does it mean to "Dancorcize"? Well, it's an hour-long class with aerobic, choreographed routines--nothing too difficult and if it's your first class, by the end of the song, you'll know the routine. And if you don't, no biggie--as Debbie always says, the only rule is that you're having fun. The best part is really Debbie's musical selection. She's also a DJ, so knows exactly the right way to incorporate familiar and not-so-familiar songs, from reggaeton to '70s disco to '80s pop to all your current favorite songs. By the end of the class, the mood is akin to the happiest and most alive you've ever felt on the dance floor. She ends it with yoga-based stretching (she's also a certified yoga instructor) and a chill, always-welcome savasana with an ever-changing soundtrack. What more could a stressed-out New Yorker ask for? The space is a huge gym at a super cool non-denominational church across from the lovely McGorlick park in Greenpoint. The crowd is a fun mix of easy-going, dance-loving people of all ages. I had forgotten even how to have a good attitude about it. As we all know, having a body means you have setbacks sometimes -- but my experience at Fit Club in the last almost two years has taught me how to be strong, put one foot in front of the other, breathe, and achieve milestones, inch by inch, day by day. My experience doing PT sessions with Dr. Manny, and Dr. Kellen have been nothing short of transformational. There's a really positive and safe environment for people at all levels here. The music is always bumping, the receptionists are keeping it running, trainers are positive and helpful, and people are working out alongside each other, each day, to meet their fitness goals. People just start smiling in there. There's so. Much. Great. Equipment. I never get bored or feel uncomfortable, in any way. They sort of go out of their way at every level to help you reach your fitness or movement goals. Having been to many physical therapy places over this years, this is hands down the most personalized program engagement I've ever experienced. I think this has to do with the leadership's mentality and work ethic. They share their values and appear to exercise them every day, accepting people of all gender identities, age, or background abilities. I've now come here via ClassPass twice to use the Air Relax Recovery Boots. The staff was really…read morenice both times. The first time I went to this location, it was also my first time trying this type of compression boot and I appreciated the explanation and answers to my questions. It turns out there are different levels of compression on this particular machine with 1 as the lowest and 4 as the highest. I started with 3 and then went to a 4 (each time it's 15 min and this was for a 30 min session). For me, I realized that when my foot is all the way inside the boot, my toes get crunched and it's a bit unpleasant. Fortunately, I was able to adjust this after the first 15 minutes and had them stick out which drastically improved the experience. The first time I came, I had completed a half 3 days prior so my soreness was not nearly as bad anymore. I didn't feel any dramatic effect though this was largely due to how I felt before I started the boot session. I decided to come back and try it closer to my initial recovery period to see if there would be more tangible results! Fast forward to my more recent visit, I'm happy to report that while there's no miracle wonder that fully takes all your pain and soreness away, I did notice a more visible improvement after the 30 min session the second time I went in. This time I went 2 days after my half but I had also run the next day so this was a day after running 2 runs in a row (day 1 was significantly more mileage than day 2). My legs were still visibly sore prior and I could also feel soreness when I squatted. After the session, (same 3 to 4 progression) I tried squatting again and it was a lot less sore (and this was noticeable immediately). I do think that there's a bit of a learning curve with the compression boots but I'd do 4 and 4 next time since it would likely achieve the best results. The staff there is really nice and someone checks up on you 15 minutes in to set the next level of compression. They sanitize the boots after (between sessions) so it feels like they also have good practices in place. I chose to wear leggings and that seemed to work well both times. I'd definitely come back and book future appointments and this is definitely something that's helpful for more immediate recovery (less impactful if it's a few days out).
