The bartender said we didn't pay for our drinks (we did), then got snotty when we said we had already paid ("Youve been drinking, I haven't"), then I paid (AGAIN!) for our round to end the disagreement and my friend still got asked to leave because he didn't think that was fair. Of course, the owner sided with his staff. I expect that, but I've been going to his establishments for years (longer than this rude bartender has worked there) and I expected more from Henry. Sad. The lighting is dim, the walls are covered in Chinese trinkets and patterned wallpaper, and everything is in shades of red. Wang's has the decadent, underground feel of an opium lounge. It's small, but on a weekday night, it's the perfect place for an intimate conversation. That is, it would be the perfect place if the music weren't so extremely loud. The cutest little whole in the wall next to Wakamono. I have to be honest here... the host of Wakamono didn't know where Wang's when I asked so I looked like a lost tourist for the first 10 minutes. wang's is awesome. wonderful atmosphere, great music (DJ on the weekends), and great drinks. they've been getting a lot of flack in the media recently because of their rumored policy of denying access to women after 11pm. while i have seen the sign that states something similar to "men only after 11pm", and while i am not accusing anyone of lying, i was there recently well after midnight and saw plenty of women in the bar. i also saw the bartender kick out two men who were acting inappropriately towards the staff and other customers. if you walk into any establishment acting as if you own it and the proprietor's don't have authority to refuse service (in accordance to law), then you get what you deserve. wang's is probably my favorite bar in lakeview. read more

This place is nice and cozy (read: small) bar. The interior has a decidedly Chinese theme to it - looks a bit over powering with all the red. The bartender was friendly and quick. The crowd was mixed - both straights and 'mos. Despite the small size they managed to have a dj there the night I went. It made it a little difficult to carry on a conversation with the music blasting so all the more reason to drink. The ginger martini was surprisingly tasty. Pear martinis are delicious. Atmosphere is cool-a small space with Asian decor and dim lighting. There is a room off to the side that is usually empty on early weeknights, so it's a great place to have a conversation. However, service is lacking. This place is great! Its tiny, dark and right next door to the Sushi place which name always escapes me - so I call it the "Sushi by Wang's". I'm not the biggest martini drinker so I tell the bartender what I'm in the mood for and "Poof!" the delicious magic happens. You would walk right by this place if you didn't know it was here. It has a sort of Asian, post-no-bills type of large wood door with a huge knocker on it. The times I've been here there has been dry ice, smoke machine, or some kind of fog making device which makes it kinda funky and sexy at the same time. Its loud, so maybe not a date place although I have had fun here on dates. I have always enjoyed this bar, but I had a very bad experience recently. After having some drinks, I paid my tab but left behind my credit card by accident. I didn't need to use the card again for a few days and only noticed it was gone then. The first thing I did then was check the transaction history, and someone had waited until that very day to use the card. Whether it had been bar staff or a customer who stole it does not matter much, but the fact the person waited so long to use it is very suspicious. I would not go back here again. Very cool small bar. I was next door at Wakamono and had a drink at Wangs while waiting for my table. Atmosphere was top notch: music lights, decor. They take their drinks very seriously and the superior quality of their drinks shows it. I didn't eat anything, bur they had a small menu of appetizers that looked good. I think I've walked by Wang's a million times, always telling myself I have to check this place out someday. Yesterday afternoon I finally got the chance! I loved the " old Shanghai" decor and their martini menu. Unfortunately, everything else went downhill from there. I walked into the bar, and noticed two bartenders behind the bar and two patrons enjoying their drinks. I sat down at the bar, the bartenders did not or would not acknowledge my presence. They continued to slice up limes and other tasks, never looking up, never saying a word to me. Then they disappeared. About five minutes later, one of the bartenders walked up to me and finally asked what I wanted. After I placed my order, she disappeared again. I waited another five minutes or so, then gave up and left. I could understand my treatment if the place was packed, but this was Saturday, around 5pm and there were only two patrons besides myself. read more

do not got there! this place discriminates!!!!!!!!!!!! i have been to wang's twice now, and both times the bartender was excessively rude, and why? because, i am a woman, and none of my friends were men. the first time: the bar was empty, except for myself and my 2 girlfriends, and the bartender's man friend he seemingly was trying to impress by giving us disdainful looks. i kid you not!!! we had ordered martinis. after about 5 minutes, we look over at the bar, and the bartender had left the drinks sitting there on the bar, without bringing them over, let alone telling us we could come and get them. as soon as we got up, he said "that'll be 12 dollars." since we didn't know it was a cash only bar, he gave us sarcastically told us where to go to an atm. when i came back, i was annoyed by his attitude and told him: "you should consider getting an atm," which given my state of frustration was nice. he answered: "actually, things are fine around here the way they are." the rest of the evening, he kept whispering over at his guy friend, clearly in disdain, while occasionally pressing on the mist button behind the bar to give himself an allure of coolness. who is that guy??? the second time was in many ways worse, because it confirmed my suspicions that the bartender is a woman hater: my girl friend went up to the bar to ask for the drink menu, and he literally told her: "i can't serve you unless you are accompanied by a man." at first, she thought he was joking, so didn't know quite what to respond, but he kept a straight face and went about his business. as soon as she told me what happened, we left immediately. after seeing other yelp reviews with the same story, it confirms all of my suspicions on their professional practice. it is always supremely ironic to me when a group that knows what it is like to be discriminated against, does not treat others the way they would like to be treated in return. their practice is unfathomably unethical, and as a matter of fact, illegal!!!! if you believe in supporting the fight against overt acts of discrimination, please don't ever set a toenail in this filthy joint. read more

I loved this place. We call it "secret bar" and frequented it from the get go. Secret bar, because in those days, we felt like it was our own little oasis that no one else knew about - and we weren't even sure it had a name until a year after we started visiting. We first discovered it as a result of our love for Wakamono. Sometimes, our group of mixed sexes, and mixed orientations (gay, straight, bi), would be some of the only people in here. I was happy to see it gain popularity, because it was a cool little spot, but not very happy when they started pitching a fit when we were trying to enter with an inappropriate ratio of guys to girls, and even turned us away on one occasion. I just saw an article about this, which prompted this review, because I literally thought it was maybe just in our heads or the experience of a couple off-nights - but seems to be more of an actual policy than I wanted to believe. Sad that our diverse group of friends can't count this as a place we can all enjoy together :-( read more

I have to say I agree with most of the positive reviews of Wang's. It's a great place to get a drink after dinner or if you're just in the mood to have some drinks with friends without all the distractions of most noisy Boystown bars. The decor is dark and red, but very inviting. It makes you feel like you slipped into a nice, cozy bar off a busy New York street. However that last statement depends on which bartender slash DJ you get that night. On a good night you can get cool indie,atmospheric lounge music or classic rock and blues. But if you get there on a bad night then you get the pain inducing sounds of Britney, Rihanna, Jay-Z and typical pop 40 garbage dance music being played over and over and over through the bartender's laptop. Just when you think a Chicago bar has done something quite cool, they let you know you are still in the conservative midwest with the cliche gay pop/dance music. read more
