This unforgettable, darling museum created everything I dreamed of in a place for family and…read morefriends to celebrate our wedding. I planned the event from out of town in Pennsylvania and sent my grandmother and a bridesmaid on an initial scouting mission to other banqueting halls in the area and to this museum, and they both agreed that Hope Gallery was undeniably the place. Were they ever right! My fiance and I have a love for traveling and for lavishing time in worthy museums, and the Hope Gallery communicated the vintage travel-inspired reception that was held for us in Pennsylvania without any of the cost -- the decor is already there! The building is a repurposed bank from the early 1900's, with great stone columns out front, a fabulous stained glass ceiling on the second floor, and a vault that is still intact. The collection is varied but true to the old European Masters aesthetic, with both originals and reproductions displayed. The Danish family who owns the gallery are artists and collectors, and that was also one of my favorite aspects of renting the space -- working with a family business that made for such personable and professional staff to work with! The floor layout was ideal for an open house situation, with round tables situated in alcoves lined with artwork that allowed for significant guest flow. The kitchen and serving amenities were perfect for our needs. Guests enjoyed appetizers and desserts on the second floor and also browsed the collections on the first floor. The museum is also accessible to Temple Square, which was something we were hoping for in order to take family photos on the grounds of the Salt Lake Temple and then walk to our venue in order to maximize our photographer's time and our own. The short walk from Temple Square to the Hope Gallery made for some great photos and avoided the need to park and repark in the city. Hope Gallery does not have its own parking, but there is street parking and multiple parking garages nearby and none of our guests complained about finding a place to park or were deterred from getting themselves to the open house! Camilla, the manager, was a pleasure to work with, both in the planning phase and on the day of. She did the follow up, was incredibly responsive, provided tables and linen with the (hugely reasonable!) rental fee, assisted with welcoming and directing our 120 guests, and has the best personality. Upon our departure, Camilla presented my groom and I with our choice of a print of one of the gallery's artworks, which we now have framed and hung in our apartment as a reminder of the day -- and is also a great piece! This place is a treasure. I can't recommend the gallery as a wedding venue (or just for a tour) any more highly.

Art Access has…read moregrown to be an organization that's really pushing to bring art to those with disabilities and those who may not otherwise have access to it. You'll find their gallery and offices here at this address. The front part of the gallery is a small but open "gift shop" -esque area with cards prints, and other small items for sale. The back part is the gallery where different shows rotate throughout the year. The big highlight of the year, IMO, is the 300 plates exhibit/fundraiser. Around a hundred artists from around the state create unique works of art on plates (the art kind, not the eating kind) in their own style. Then the gallery opens and the plates go on sale. It's terrific exposure for emerging artists and a nice way to see many different styles and add a little something to your collection.

I had an old but precious brass Zippo lighter I wanted engraved. It had to be special. AND it had…read moreto be onsite. Of all the typical places, i.e. jewelry stores, trophy engravers, etc. This is what I encountered (one or more of these). 1. It'd have to be sent out. 2. It was lazer engraved (a very shallow etch that burns changing the color of letters to black). I have nothing against this per se but it's not what I wanted on the lighter. 3. Fonts are very limited selection. I wanted more unique custom. 4. I wanted the placement very different then horizontal/vertical. I drove by the place that yelp had listed and I found out that Dave has moved. I finally go old school and CALL. I left a message and he got right back to me. After telling him what I had and what I wanted he told me the charge is $6 a letter $60 min very quickly because a lot of locals hang up on him. So basically you're getting 10 letters for $60 and then it goes $6 per. He gave me his resume over the phone which is quite impressive- and the method he uses to engrave- old school with 20th century modernity. He takes clients locally by appt only. The bulk of his business is people shipping THEIR precious items to him. He was very accommodating in arranging an appt for me given my rush circumstance- he had a heart. When I arrived at his workshop he apologized for state of his workshop- Martha Stewart does not live there. No, it's what you'd expect from a real tradesman. We sit at his desk while he analyzes the lighter and gives me a book of scripts to peruse. One caught my eye but he says that will be extra (shading and such), but I didn't want that one EXACTLY. I came up with an amalgamation via the book and my description. It was font ala carte :-) We settled in for the lengthy precision placement of the characters. It wasn't traditional by any stretch. I specifically wanted a character to be halved on the lid and the body. Preparation was the bulk of the time. Then the actual engraving takes place. He loves to talk about his craft and you can tell he absolutely takes great pride in his finished one of a kind pieces. So when the lighter was finished, I was absolutely blown away by the beauty. It had the perfect amount of depth to compliment it's age, no puddles or pooling. It is gorgeous. When I presented it to my husband (who could find fault with Michelangelo). He loved it. Told me like 5x over days randomly as he used it. Even remarked that his pistols (engraved ones) look like a 5 yo did them. Which Dave does those too. His prices are NOT cheap, take your cheap stuff to the stock guys. His is the kind you take your priceless, heirloom or sentimental items to. He does odd shaped items, scenes and anything you can imagine. His facebook name IMHO is not befitting the scope of his offerings. www.facebook.com/DuckBandWeddingRings
