I checked the confirmation email and realized I called him the wrong name. I went back to where he was, showed him the email and apologized for calling him the wrong name. His attitude continued to be standoffish and condescending. We started the tour by Javier telling us he left Spain for a long time, but returned a few years ago to Barcelona because there's a lot of tourism and he does this for the money. He continued by saying "I wish you good luck with pickpockets here, don't take it personally if you get robbed", and then started with a bit of history about Barcelona. We have traveled Europe for over two months, doing free walking tours in each city we stayed at, and this was the first time we left a tour after 20 minutes. Javier's attitude was dispassionate, condescending, and you could tell he does not enjoy showing off Barcelona to travelers. Honestly, I thought his original comment about doing it for the money only was a joke, but soon realized it wasn't. Javier, I'm sorry I called you by the wrong name. I'm sure sometimes you also make mistakes, right? Even after apologizing to you, you made me feel unwelcome and out of place. Perhaps waiting for Sergio's tour would have been best. We were excited to take our first tour in Barcelona and the way you mistreated us left us with a very bitter taste in our mouths. It's unfortunate someone like you is showing this wonderful city to tourists. Perhaps you should reconsider your career. Hospitality doesn't suit you.

The ride was beautiful as we came closer to Montserrat, the basilica was phenomenal, the market was amazing. I ended up purchasing two delicious cheeses - goat and truffle. The walk to the cross was challenging as we had limited time but well worth it. It's an uphill climb. I loved the family history of the winery. The stability of the family to keep the property in the family for 36 generations since 964 was incredible. The vineyards were started in the 1800's. The ambience was perfect with stone cellars and towers. Great place for an event. Loved it! If you go to Barcelona, DON'T miss it!

What really set Antoine apart, though, were the little things he did throughout the day. After our windsurfing lesson, the sand was unbelievably hot! I was stranded, standing on my sail to avoid burning my feet, and Antoine ran over, grabbed my sail, and helped me off the beach. It was such a minor effort, but it perfectly reflected how attentive he is. For lunch, he took us to an amazing local restaurant and patiently walked us through the menu, explaining the dishes. Later, when we decided to relax on the beach, he even arranged towels and an umbrella for us to borrow since we hadn't brought any. Again, it was those thoughtful touches that made the experience so memorable. Antoine was simply fantastic with my 15-year-old son, engaging him with ease and making us feel like he wanted to be there with us throughout the day. Paul, the owner and our tour guide also made sure we learned some of the history of Barcelona, and knowledge of Catalonia and even stopped on the way to some hidden areas to explain the history visually as we walked through the neighborhoods of The Old City to the next tapas restaurant. History was such a big part of this and we got what we paid for from the start. At our first tapas restaurant, Paul pulled out a map of Barcellona and explained the importance for first to give us an overall understanding of Barcelona and as we moved on through the night, we would get to know each other more and dig into some of the details about the Wines, the Tapas, and even discussed some things about ourselves. After several glasses of wines, we got to know a whole lot about everything. The more we moved on, the more fun and the more we learned. What better way to learn wines, tapas and history than by going to some of the best Tapas places, sitting down at a table, tasting different wines and having them paired with different tapas combinations and have Paul discuss the history of the area as well as where the wines come from and the background of where you are eating while drinking these great wines. My wife and I met him promptly at 5:00 pm in front of the University of Barcelona along with a great couple from North Carolina. So it was the 5 of us that where going to go on this 5 hour adventure. We ended up going to 3 fabulous tapas restaurants and ended up at a Cava tasting in one of his favorite wine stores in the Old City. By 10:30 we learned local wines, new tapas places, more history, and met a great couple that we ended up exchanging numbers with to get together in each other's cities and do some more wine and dine adventures together. We found we had a lot in common. After Paul left, the 4 of us just hung around until the owner closed up. The key here was that Paul knows these places and they know him. When we walked in, they knew what to serve us and the dishes kept on coming. All the wines and food are included in the price and it was extremely reasonable for what we drank, ate and learned.
