Lisa was engaging and knowledgeable!

Free 2hr walking tours daily! Meeting point is at Plaza Reial (Carrer del Carme, 44, small street off La Rambla...look for a KFC) Arrive 15-30 mins early. Wear sunblock, comfy sneakers or walking shoes and bring water. Also no bare shoulders/knees to enter the cathedrals. Lisa was our tour guide for the walking tour of the Old City. She imparts history and cultural knowledge in such an entertaining and captivating manner throughout. We wanted to take more tours with her specifically but time would not permit. Wholeheartedly recommend Lisa (with the Irish accent) and Runner Bean tours! Recommend the Old City/Gothic Quarter tour first, then highly recommend the 11am Gaudi tour on same day you visit Sagrada Familia. Buy advance tickets for Sagrada Familia online for anytime after 3pm.

Runner Bean Tours popped up on my pre-travel research of Barcelona. They've been mentioned by Rick Stevens, so that's a good endorsement. They have couple of tours - the one which I selected was the 'free' Gothic Quarter walking tour. Free, means, at the end of the tour, you pay what you think it was worth. Our tour guide was Jess. She spoke perfect english and then told us that her parents are British, but she grew up in Australia, then she moved to Europe (another city), but finally decided to live in Barcelona! She was very knowledgeable and had a good sense of humor. All runner bean tours start from the same place, which is near La Rambla street. I'd made online reservations. Their website is very user friendly. After the reservation, I received an email with detailed instructions. It had a map of the starting point, so it was easy to find. My name was on the list with the crew. Tour started on time. I highly recommend Runner Bean Tours in Barcelona.

I really enjoyed the Gothic Quarter Tour with Jarrod. It was a fun and interesting insight into the oldest part of the town and the people that shaped it. I already signed up for the Gaudi Tour and would absolutely recommend checking Runner Bean Tours out. :-)

Free Gaudi Walking Tour (9/9/2018)

Using Yelp, I was able to do a little bit of planning for my trip to Barcelona. I knew a Gaudi tour was a must-do, see we reserved spots for Runner Bean's free Gaudi walking tour. **Note: RBT's website was really easy to navigate, pand reserve a spot. In the email confirmation, details about were to meet, cancellation, etc. Very thorough! Jarred was our guide. He did a great job giving detail into Gaudi's life, showing how his architectural features and designs evolved over his years. There's several Gaudi buildings around Barcelona and, after the 2 hour walking tour, we still hadn't seen everything. My personal fav? Of course, the Dragon House! Basically, a whimsical fairyland that belongs on the Candy Land board game. No angles, bright, bold colors, lots of broken glass mosaics, an amazing sight for the eyes! I definitely recommend this free walking tour -it's a perfect glimpse into history, and a magnificent specter of Barcelona!

I came across Runner Bean Tours because the meeting location, Plaça Reial, was downstairs from my AirBnb. I wasn't sure what to expect because I never have participated in a free walking tour before, but my friend and I were extremely pleased with our decision to go with Runner Beans! Runner Beans is a family owned company and tour guides work off of commission. Between both of the tour guides, I never felt pressured to tip or did not see any awkwardness if someone chose not to tip. Any time received the guide seems genuinely appreciative of. Check in: Directions provided to get to the meeting spot is easy to follow. It's easy to spot the tour guides with their green umbrellas. They are approachable and extremely friendly too! Our first day in town we did the Gothic Quarter tour with Alexandria (Ali). She was amazing! Our group had about 12 people in it from all over the world. The tour lasted about 2 hours and gave us a good understanding of the history and how to get around the Gothic Quarter. She was extremely personable with each person in the tour and took moments to get to know you, where you were from, offer local suggestions and engage in conversation. Our second day in town, we took the Guadi tour with Jared. This tour requires you to purchase metro passes for 2 stops. Jared was also welcoming and personable. He offered us great advice and directed us how to use the metro and what pass would be best for our use. Unfortunately, we had come from a guided tour at the Sagrada Familia so we only hung out with Jared for the first half of the tour as we did not want to go back to see the Sagrada Familia on this tour. We told him before the tour started we would be leaving early so he did not think we were rude and he was completely understanding. Both tours were organized and informative. I highly recommend to anyone coming to the area. You'll leave knowing you're way around and the rich history of Barcelona. Even if you are a solo traveler, going on this walking tour is a great way to meet people. Having the introduction in the beginning of each tour makes you feel comfortable with the people you will be spending the next 2+ hours with :)

I found Runner Bean on line and their reviews were terrific. So I booked a 4 hour tour for my wife and I with the owner Gorka. He was professional and communication was great leading up to today for our scheduled tour. We had a personal tour guide Anna and driver Juan Carlos. They took us all over Barcelona and Anna was so informative and incredible. This was a great decision and I can't say enough positive things about the tour. We really got a true sense of the history and modern Barcelona culture. I strongly recommend a personal guided tour of Barcelona with Runner Bean. You will not be disappointed! Thank you Gorka, Anna, and Juan Carlos for everything!

When the confirmation came in, it looked like the same tour name, Gothic, but when I checked in for the 9am tour, it was clarified that the 3pm tour would be different, Gaudi Modernism. Reservations online were quick and easy. It costs 3 euro to hold a spot. I gladly paid the 6 euro for both. I took the 9am Gothic Tour on a Monday. So many people booked they called an extra guide. Many showed up without a reservation. There were three guides and we broke into three large groups. Juliana was great. She was little and didn't have an umbrella; we very temporarily lost her twice! But her knowledge and enthusiasm more than made up for it! She was also very personable. I highly recommend her! Natalia gave the Gaudi tour at 3pm. She was also extremely knowledgeable and patient; our tour involved getting the group on and off a metro to Familia Sagada. Would welcome her as a tour guide again. As per the custom, you decide the cost at the end. They took my dollars and euros. I highly recommend these tours!!!!

The pace was perfect -- a great combination of eating, walking, touring, and photospots so just when you were getting full, you had the opportunity to have a little walk to work up an appetite for the next stop. We went to at least 5 separate eateries (although I honestly I started losing count), some of them quite historic including the famed 4 Cats cafe. The tour even vetted out the best churros and best chocolate in the city (separate businesses), and brokered a deal that enabled us to try them together! Brian was a delight and in many of the restaurants, clearly knew the staff and owners -- this was great as it made us feel like VIPs and also gave us some insight into the history of the business -- some of them had been open and family run for many years! And weirdly -- even though Brian is American-born -- I felt that to be a plus: he was able to answer some of the more "basic" questions I might have been uncomfortable asking to a local, and given his time spent living in Spain thus far, I felt like he was still able to give us a really down-to-earth, local introduction to the city. Due to the size of the group, we only went to places where they could make reservations and seat a large group in a private back room. So we didn't visit any truly hole-in-the-wall places, but all the food was good so we didn't really mind. I will say this tour is possibly better for the beginning of your visit to Spain rather than the end. My partner and I had visited San Sebastian prior to Barcelona, and so many of the foods Brian was "introducing" like boquerones and croquettes we had already enjoyed and indulged in many times before.

He speaks seven languages and has great world knowledge and stories. His love of Gaudi is undeniable but he backed up that assertion with facts and examples that made us all converts. He took some time to find a little bit about us and our touring style before launching our tour. I told him that I would often stray from the group but to go on without me. He complied except when he would have a nugget of knowledge. I was glad every time he pulled me back in and strayed less and less thereafter. WE had to split into two taxis heading to Sagrada Familia and one driver did not listen to Javier's instructions and dropped half of our group in the wrong spot. Javier was able to find them and then talked us into the basilica despite the fact that we were late to our appointment. Sagrada was the centerpiece of the tour - if not our entire time in Barcelona, for me - so that would have been a tragedy. Once inside, we saw the glory of Gaudi. We had a late addition of our 5th person and they were able to handle quite simply for us. The meeting of Javier went exactly as planned and, for what we got, the price was worth it. I'd rather pay more and get a first class experience than go with some cheap skip-the-line tour run by a college student. Javier is passionate about Gaudi, Barcelona and our satisfaction. Thank you, Javier and Forever Barcelona!

This was the worst experience we've ever had with a free walking tour…read more I greeted our guide (Javier) by a different name by mistake, to which he said "Sergio is at 11am" and turned away from us to talk to someone else. I checked the confirmation email and realized I called him the wrong name. I went back to where he was, showed him the email and apologized for calling him the wrong name. His attitude continued to be standoffish and condescending. We started the tour by Javier telling us he left Spain for a long time, but returned a few years ago to Barcelona because there's a lot of tourism and he does this for the money. He continued by saying "I wish you good luck with pickpockets here, don't take it personally if you get robbed", and then started with a bit of history about Barcelona. We have traveled Europe for over two months, doing free walking tours in each city we stayed at, and this was the first time we left a tour after 20 minutes. Javier's attitude was dispassionate, condescending, and you could tell he does not enjoy showing off Barcelona to travelers. Honestly, I thought his original comment about doing it for the money only was a joke, but soon realized it wasn't. Javier, I'm sorry I called you by the wrong name. I'm sure sometimes you also make mistakes, right? Even after apologizing to you, you made me feel unwelcome and out of place. Perhaps waiting for Sergio's tour would have been best. We were excited to take our first tour in Barcelona and the way you mistreated us left us with a very bitter taste in our mouths. When your guide has a passion for the subject and when your guide has some personality, it makes all the difference in the world. Javier has both. But you pay a premium to get the "Javier tour" and I'm guessing that it's worth it because he had the eight of us in this group (all friends who did a private tour) quite entertained. (Maybe ALL of their tour guides are great but Javier is who you pay a bit more for.) His knowledge of the Sagrada Familia was encyclopedic but the trick for a tour guide is to not sound like an encyclopedia but, on the other hand, to keep the information and interesting facts coming.
