Loved the Montserrat Tour! We did the Winery Tour with it as well with wine tasting and tapas. Rebecca, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable. The ride was beautiful as we came closer to Montserrat, the basilica was phenomenal, the market was amazing. I ended up purchasing two delicious cheeses - goat and truffle. The walk to the cross was challenging as we had limited time but well worth it. It's an uphill climb. I loved the family history of the winery. The stability of the family to keep the property in the family for 36 generations since 964 was incredible. The vineyards were started in the 1800's. Booked a tour of Montserrat with a wine and tapas tour through Castleexperience. Montserrat is quite far away and takes awhile to get there. Montserrat is a beautiful area and you can get a nice view of the area because it's higher up in the mountains, but there is basically just the one church containing the black Madonna. I'd suggest taking the 20 minute hike to the scenic point at the cross as you look out. They do give you a tasting of a few of the liquors that the nuns make there, i was tempted to buy one as i thought it would go good with an espresso based drink. The wine tour of Oller del Mas with tapas wasn't very good the wines were ok. They offered tasting of their 3 cheapest wines and then explained the other other wines which you could purchase a glass or a bottle to take home of if you want. All their wines are organic so that's something different than most wineries. I thought the last red they offered was pretty good, a merlot blend. The tapas offered were kind of a let down. It was more of a charcuterie plate, cheese, salami, cured ham, and a tiny croquette and tortilla and a piece of cake. Pretty much the worst tapas I've had in Spain. Overall it's a long trip for just the one church housing the black Madonna with a wine tour. The guides were great and gave good information the bus was clean and the ride was smooth, the wines were okay, the tapas were disappointing. Montserrat was a bit colder maybe than Barcelona maybe 10 degrees so be prepared with warmer clothes. It's a beautiful place because it's high up in the mountains, I just felt it was not worth traveling all that way just for Montserrat. read more

What an amazing day trip from Barcelona! We met our guide out front of the Hard Rock Café which was an easy walk from our hotel. After being divided up into smaller groups and given our guide, we boarded the bus. This is not the same bus that we finished the day with, so don't leave anything on the bus at any point because the bus might be exchanged if you are on an all-day tour. The drive up to Montserrat was a little scary, as the roads were super narrow and curvy, but these bus drivers do it all the time, so I should have just been sitting back and enjoying the ride and view. But headlines of "bus crashes, tourists killed," kept flashing in my mind, and it wasn't so easy to just relax on the bus ride up or for that matter on the bus ride down. However, it is well worth it! Montserrat is a must-see for anyone who is visiting Barcelona. We had a lot of free time there, so I was able to visit the art museum there, hike up and out to the cross, and really enjoy the place. Next, down the hill we went to a winery for lunch and wine tasting. The food was good and the wine tasting was fun. We were with a decent size group so by the time we were completely done with the wine tasting and had made a bathroom stop for the return trip to Barcelona, there was no time for shopping in their gift shop or even purchasing a bottle of wine! Bummer. Note: the wine tasting isn't a true wine tasting (you don't spit out the wine, as there are no spit bowls--you're expected to just drink, drink, drink). If I'd drunk all the wine that they'd poured into my glasses, I would have had trouble standing up. This trip from Barcelona was, however, a great experience! read more

We went on the Castlexperience Wine Tour to Montserrat and had a BLAST! It was very well organized and we were impressed at how much we covered in the time spent on the trip. Everything was very clear and coordinated extremely well to make a packed day very enjoyable. Your in a group of 20 people and share a bus with 3 total groups (60 total), but are spaced out enough where it isn't overwhelming which was great. Delph was our tour guide and she was wonderful because she kept the tour light hearted and fun-filled. Great views, amazing history, awesome experience and tasty wine topped off our visit. What a great tour through Castlexperience! We did a full day starting at Montserrat Monastery ... I mean the cogwheel train was an experience on its on... but what a sight when you get to the top and you see the monastery and its view! Afterwards we headed to Oller de Mas for a lunch, which was delicious, and a wine tasting. The wine tasting consisted of 3 wines, including 2 at lunch. You then have free time to relax and drink more wine. The tour guides were fabulous and very informative the whole time! Vince was fantastic, very professional and personable. Highly recommend if you're visiting Barcelona. This was honestly the highlight of my trip! We had booked a tour package that included a tour of Monserrat and a wine castle tour with the addition of tapas for lunch. The tour started at 8:45am leaving from Hard Rock Cafe and we returned back at 4:30pm. Monserrat is absolutely beautiful. Our tour guide Alex did an amazing job of educating my group of friends on the history and gave us a lovely tour. After Alex gave us a tour, he gave us about an hour of time for us to explore on our own and gave us a time to meet back up with him before we headed to the castle. The castle was gorgeous from the inside. After the tour, we were seated for our wine and tapas. We had a variety of tastings and I surprisingly loved one of the reds and ended up buying a bottle. Our host poured a very generous amount of wine in each tasting and the tapas were all delicious as well! When we were leaving Monserrat to get back on the bus to head back to Barcelona, we saw several local vendors that had many samples and things to offer. I didn't end up buying anything but the honey and cheese I tried were fabulous! Overall the tour was very organized and my friends and I ended up having a great experience! Part of a half day tour ending up here. Great ambience, excellent staff, food was fresh and wine was flowing

This is a really nice, memorable experience to do when you are vacationing in Barcelona. This review is based on the Montserrat, Food & Wine Package, which is a full day experience (08:45 - 19:30). We met the tour group in front of Hard Rock Cafe. After meeting the tour guides, we boarded the bus, and drove the 90-minute ride to the majestic, jagged mountain of Montserrat. Our tour guide gave us a brief history of Barcelona once the bus started moving. With the assurance that I was not going to be quizzed, I slept until we arrived at the monastery in Montserrat, which sits at a little over 4,000 feet above sea level. Once we arrived at the top, we were given 2 1/2 hours of free time. Besides the monastery, there is an old church where the Black Madonna sits, a big cafeteria, a gift shop, and if you're adventurous enough, you can hike to the edge of the mountain, which I highly recommend because the view is breathtakingly amazing. Wear sensible shoes! Afterward, we hopped on the bus and straight to Oller Del Mas Country Club for a multi-course traditional Catalan lunch. There we had a chance to mingle with other people and had our first taste of the vineyard's wine. Lunch was delicious! We started with a puree gazpacho, a community salad, a fish entree, then a second entree of delicious Coq Au Vin, and lastly, homemade cheesecake. We also had the option to buy more wine by the glass or by the bottle if the wine bottles they provided on the table were not enough. Great value at €10 per bottle. Guided by Clara, after a satisfying lunch, we set off to the vineyard where we walked by the vines (actual harvesting is in September), went inside the production building, and into this medieval castle where we got to do samplings of their wines. The owner of the vineyard, Frank Margenat, greeted us and welcomed us into his home. He is the 36th generation of owning this castle and vineyard that dates back to the 10th Century. What stands Oller Del Mas apart from the majority of Spain wineries is the use of their own strains of yeast in comparison to using commercial yeasts, making them one of the top distinguished wine producers in Catalonia. It was a real treat to be able to taste 3 of their wines, accompanied with cheese and crackers, inside his castle. Thank you Frank for letting us into your home. This is the epitome of a Tourist trap. AVOID at all costs. Let me explain : There is nothing you can not do yourself and still enjoy everything they offer . You arrive at 8am at a busy corner interaction , while they take 30 minutes to segregate the tourists. Then your are cramped on a tight bus. No bathrooms , light recline. Imagine being on a cheap airline. Stuffed like cattle. No offerings of water. No bathrooms , no rest stops. You proceed to Montserrat. That is the true gem . You can do this alone with your own group. Hire a taxi or guide. All they do is then deposit you on Montseratt. Give you a 30 minute "tour". Where then you have to PAY to see Montserrat. As the museum, liquor tasting , and ride up the mountain are Not included. As this tour can't stand on its own , they package this wonder in their tour. Then after your deposited and left Alone for two hours to wander and Pay again for every moment you spend up there. Your packed again on a cheap tour bus. It's never the same bus. So you have to take all your stuff off. Haul it. Repeat and rinse every stop. Basically bus taxis. It's not personal. Once leaving Montseratt you are again cramped on a tight bus until you reach a small winery. When I say small. Think really small. You are then hustled em masse to Buffet type tables where they serve you the worst food you will eat in Europe. A small Spanish chorizo and a German sausage with cold beans. Upon arrival they have a carafe of wine unable to be sold. Your asked to share this Carafe with 6-7 people. If you would like another glass. Again bring out your wallet. You start to wonder what you paid for. As nothing is included. Not even the scrap jug wine . Afterwards. With no bathrooms faculties to speak off , men and women share 4 stalls with over 300 guests cramped in. Think your worst ballpark wait que . Afterward again you are hustled on another bus , with a different driver. Same cramped small conditions with no restrooms so if u drink. Gotta hold it. To come to a Tiny winery with no view in a cow pasture . Finally you get to take another bus. Your fourth bus now to get back which takes another hour and a half Again no water, no rest stop. No toilet. And dumped in Ramblas. I live in Hawaii. I am a tourist. This is a joke. YOU have paid 100euros to be bused to a place you could go to for 25 euros. Enjoy better wine. Have more time to enjoy. And much better food for half the price and still save 5 hours . Avoid like the plague Finally. The following day. We were met on time at a central location and the van, driver, and guide were all super friendly and welcoming. Actual (overall) rating 3.5. When doing my research for the Barcelona trip I knew that I would take a day trip to Montserrat so I searched all around the Internet for options. I knew that if I were just to go to Montserrat myself I could just purchase the rail ticket at the Plaza Espanya station in Barcelona for about €30, saving the hassle and money for booking third-party. What allured me to this tour was the wine tasting component (since Spain is one of the three biggest wine countries in Europe) and that at the time of writing, it received a 2018 Tripadvisor award for best wine experiences in the world. As it stands it has a 5-star rating on TA with over 2000 reviews. Date of Tour: 3/4/2019 This review is best understood if I talked about the experience in components. While I liked some parts of the tour I had issues with others, even though overall I did enjoy the tour. Tour guide: Albert was our tour guide for our 16-person group. He led us on our tour of the church, detailed us on the types of activities one can do in the area, gave very clear explanations on where/when the group returned after free time and at the winery gave the winetasting lecture portion of the tour. It seems like he's one of the more senior guides as he was also training junior guides while doing his actual job and at the bus had to take care of a tour member clearly hungover. He even gave me suggestions for vermouth bars in an e-mail after the tour. 5/5. Coach: The buses were comfortable and the windows were big enough to enjoy the breathtaking views. Conversely don't get a window seat if mountain rides on big buses make you uncomfortable. My issue is that the bus that you initially ride to Montserrat from Barcelona is not the same bus you'll ride the entire time. In actuality you'll be changing buses three times: the initial ride, to the winery and back to Barcelona. I know that for them it's cost-efficient as the buses are effectively a people-mover but it feels weird considering that this is private transport. 4/5. I had enough time to do the top 3 things I wanted: touch La Moreneta's orb inside the church, ride the funicular and go on a hike. 5/5 if you use your time wisely. Everything was bland and filling but not in a good way. - Albert did the wine tasting portion but it was weird that not one employee or representative of the winery dropped by to say "hi". - The wines were unremarkable. I think I had better house wine at some of the tapas restaurants back in Barcelona. - No opportunity to buy the wine should one be interested. - The biggest disappointment was that all the guests I saw were other people doing Castlexperience tours. I didn't think I saw any group of people that came to the winery themselves. Rating: 2.5/5 (rounded to 3). While I highly recommend Montserrat as a daytrip and Castlexperience is a decent product, the winery experience was a disappointment. If all you care about is average wine then I would recommend this trip as the excursion is generous with your Montserrat free time. If you care about food and wine as much as you care about sightseeing then I'd find another company or skip wine tasting in Catalonia for an area in Spain that has greater prestige in winemaking (ie La Rioja). read more

I'm so glad we took the full day Montserrat tour from Barcelona including lunch and wine tasting in Oller del Mas with Castle Experience!! This was our favorite experience from our entire trip in Spain!! The entire process was so easy. Once you've booked the trip, you just need to show up on time and have a great time! The weather was beautiful and the sight was just breathtaking. It was an amazing sight to witness from the moment that we were in the bus driving to the mountains all the way to the top. There were plenty of activities to do up there, including but are not limited to a farmer's market, boy gospel, souvenirs shop, hiking trails, and museums! With the 2 and 1/2 hours of free time, we were able to hike, visit the farmer's market and souvenirs shop, and experience the boy gospel. Our guide, Laura, was also amazing! this experience was far away from the "castle experience" we expected. i'd rather call it a tourist trap characterized by superficial information about barcelona, montserrat and last but not least the wine. everything needs to be done in a hurry, you won't even find a minute to discover and enjoy things by yourself. we booked the tapas & wine tour which included a wine tasting accompanied by a luxury brunch. the so called luxury brunch consisted of 5 montaditos with cheap jamón. there was no olive oil, no olives, no cheese or any other specialty we expected to be included in a luxury brunch. so we had 3 glasses of different wines without any explanation in terms of their taste and uniqueness. then we had to leave in a hurry without having the chance to finish our last glass of wine. to put it in a short way: don't waste your money and precious time here. this tour hasn't got anything to do with a professional wine tasting. read more

So glad I booked this tour. I read Trip Advisor and Yelp reviews. I've been to Montserrat before and wanted to make sure my husband could see how beautiful it is. It's a Church that is set high in rugged stone mountains where the Monks and famous Montserrat Boy's Choir live. It's pretty magical because I've never seen a place like it in all my travels. The views are spectacular and it's a great place for photos. We are not religious but really enjoyed our trip there. It felt a little rushed on time and I would have preferred more time for photos of views than what we did. There is a cheese market too and they give samples. We purchased a herbed goat cheese there. It was 12 euros and a large portion of cheese so bring cash and leave some time to enjoy the market. We headed to the Castle for wine tasting. I was enthralled listening to our guide talk about the history of the family and what family life was in the Medieval times. Europe has so much charm with it's history and buildings that are old from the 12th and 13th century. We learned about the wine made and the grape called PicaPoll that put this wine on the map with a Robert Parker rating. We went to a small room and had appetizers and a wine tasting. They told us about each wine and it was fun to try them. They also make olive oil here too. I thought the wine was ok but I did leave with a bottle of olive oil. It's been fun to cook with it at home and reminisce our trip to the Castle and Winery. It was nice to leave the city and see the countryside. I highly recommend this tour!!! read more

Montserrat & Wine Tasting; the best! First a big shout out to Marta! She was one of the best tour guides I've ever had. Young, energetic, funny and extremely knowledgeable about the entire experience. She truly made the trip amazing. We picked up the bus in front of the Hard Rock Cafe at Placa de Catalunya, 21. The bus trip was very comfortable and Marta kept us informed along the way about various landmarks, etc. Upon arrival at the monastery, she gave us a tour and set us loose. We had the choice of walking the trail to the cross of St. Michael or listening to the boys choir (unfortunately there was not time to do both). We went to the cross and the vistas were amazing. We were also treated to a free tasting of 3 liquors in one of the shops, yum! Afterwards we went to the Oller del Mas winery. We had lunch with wine, of course! Then we went into the new building that houses the tasting room which overlooks all the wine barrels. We learned that this winery is in its 36th generation (owner's son is the 37th generation) and it uses sustainable, organic farming methods (very important to us!). Marta knew a lot about the wines that we tasted and mentioned that she will actually be partaking in the grape picking in a few weeks from when we visited. At the end of the trip, we got back on the bus for a smooth ride back to our original pick up point. It was a beautiful day spent in Montserrat and at the Oller del Mas Castle winery. This tour was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of city life in Barcelona. A bus takes you about an hour out of the city to the Oller Winery in the Spanish countryside. The bus ride is very scenic and the guide gives you a brief history of the area on the way to the castle. Once you get to the castle they give you a guided tour of the vineyards and processing plant. Afterwards you walk to the castle where they store and age the wine. After walking around the castle they serve you the wine starting from low end to high end. I thought the cheapest wine tasted the best. The entire experience is very small and intimate. The guide was very friendly as was everyone else on the tour. So it's not the most exciting thing to do in the world but with the beautiful scenery and the peacefulness of it all it's definitely an option if you want to see more than just the city of Barcelona. read more

Spent time in Barcelona prior to heading off on our cruise. We chose the Castle experience to Montserrat and vineyard. We were a group of 8. We met Aurora our guide at the HardRock in Barcelona and traveled to the country to the oldest monastery. It was breathtaking and a wonderful time was had by all. We took the Cable care up tot he highest point. We saw the Black Madonna and had time to shop. We boarded the bus and headed for lunch at a country club, it did start to rain and we were supposed to walk to the vineyard * couple minutes but they brought the bus for us which was very nice. The winery was one of the oldest in the region and the winery is very cool. Our tasting was in the castle. My only complaint would be our guide was also the sommelier... I would have preferred more details about the wines from someone who actually worked there. Otherwise great day. read more

I joined this tour with my bestie Daniela and we had a great time. We were in a nice small group and we had the best funniest tour leader in the whole wide world: Marta! We absolutely loved her professionalism and positive attitude, as well as her funny speeches regarding everything. She was GREAT and I would like to thank her for the good time during the tour. Even though it was a half a day tour, it pretty much covered everything. We got the chance to see the Monastery and the Black Madonna, as well as the outskirts of this funny shaped unique mountain. We had a nice walk to the Cross of San Miguel, that is located on a peak that gives you an awesome panoramic view and you can take some cool pictures too. The weather helped, it was sunny and clear sky all along, so we were lucky for that as well. The best, most expected part of the tour, the wine tasting was on a perfect timing, as we were already getting hungry. We had some nice tapas (jamon with tomato bread,cheese, salads), ps: Try it with the most beloved Spanish olive oil, so you can merge completely into the Spanish cuisine and delight your senses. The wine was very special, all organic and with a rich tradition passed from generation to generation. Marta told us everything about it and you got to feel really lucky and special to be trying such a prestigious wine. We learned tasting techniques and ended up buying one bottle as we fell in love with the taste (make sure you try the picapoll wine, very unique and peculiar taste). I highly recommend this experience when visiting Barcelona and are anxious to maybe try another tour package they offer. We did the half-day monastery/winery tour at the Santa Maria de Monsterat monastery and Oller de Mas winery. I cannot say enough positive things about this tour company and the entire experience. We went into the day not really knowing what to expect, but were completely blown away. Experiencing Montserrat is a must-do if you are visiting Barcelona, and booking this tour was an awesome way to get a lot out of our visit. It was awesome to be placed with a small English-speaking group, all members being close to our age (mid-twenties). Our tour guide was Dani! He was SO friendly, funny, and engaging. He was extremely passionate about the history of Barcelona and answered all of our questions with enthusiasm. The winery dates back to year 936. Getting to explore the grounds in such a small group and with such an amazing guide was really special. Dani was so great that we begged him to come with us to our next vacation destination (Mykonos). I cannot say enough good things about him and the day overall! Just finished our day tour of Montserrat and Oller Del Mas. Alex T was our tour guide and was both educational and entertaining! Our day started very organized as we checked in at 8:30. We were on the road by 8:45. The bus was clean and new. Alex was joined by another guide named Mercedes on the ride to Montserrat who was equally as educational and entertaining. We truly had a history lesson as well as religious education. Alex walked us all over Montserrat and gave us just enough and not too much information and left us ample amount of time to explore on our own and grab a snack if needed. I highly recommend Montserrat and cannot imagine it without a tour guide. We went on to Oller Del Mas Winery where we enjoyed a decadent lunch with traditional gazpacho, roasted duck and a Catalan version of creme brûlée as well as delicious wine. We toured the winery, which is a castle occupied by the 37th generation of the same family and once again enjoyed the history and education from Alex. Then we went on to wine tasting. We sat outside in the shade overlooking the entire Valley and tasted 4 wines. We learned all about the different varietals and the wine makers approach. We returned as promised by 7:00pm. Might sound like a long day, but trust me it all played out perfectly. Excellent price for the experience! Overall a great day! This is a MUST DO! read more

Went on a half day afternoon tour today of two family wineries with Victor and Simon. We had an incredible time! The tours are fairly small so you feel like you're almost getting a private tour without paying the price. The wineries were beautiful and off the beaten path. Our tour included delicious food and obviously wine. The guides were knowledgable and personable. I felt like we were traveling with friends. I would absolutely use this company again.
