Walt's is a Marion staple and one of those places you don't fully appreciate until you realize how many towns don't have a spot like this. The pizza is always great, and the double-decker is what sold me the first time I tried it. Every March and October they bring back their Reuben pizza, and it's honestly one of the best specialty pizzas I've ever had worth timing a visit around. The staff are always friendly, and the whole place has a cozy, hometown feel. There's also outdoor patio. This is Marion's beloved pizza joint. Most enjoy their pizza and come by from all over the area. When we are here visiting family it is a must visit or take out. Tonight we ordered two pizzas, one was a double decker with pepperoni, sausage and onion and the other was a garden veggie pizza. This was my second time ordering (delivery) from them. I will admit, the first time, I wasn't impressed with the thin crust pizza, cut in small squares, which I didn't like. So, wifey and I decided to try them again. She went with the Steak Asiago, which she had ordered before. She enjoyed her meal, especially the steak itself, cooked tender and juicy, albeit lacking seasoning. This time around, I ordered the Double Decker (pepperoni) pizza. I deleted the beef, sausage, Canadian bacon from it. Sauce and cheese were perfectly proportioned. I added onions and mushrooms, pricey toppings, my only complaint. I must say: Best pizza I've eaten in Marion. Simply delicious! It has become my new go-to pizza. Walt's Pizza has redeemed its well deserved reputation. Definitely be ordering again. Always great. The last 2 times we ordered the pizza was 10/10 amazing. The crust was perfect. The toppings were delicious. I'm not sure if they got a new staff member or new management. We have been going to Walt's for years and the food and service was always good but something has changed. The food (steak and baked potato) was like warm and dried out. The entire time we were there, there were a minimum of 2 vacuum cleaners going and all the servers were doing their final clean up and talking about who could leave early. Going out to eat is expensive and I don't want to hear all of this. We will still order their pizza but it will be for take out only. We used to be 2x weekly regulars at Walts eating in the restaurant once and ordering once. After covid we had issues every time we ate in the restaurant or ordered to take home. Tonight we ordered take out for the first time in over a year. We ordered a pizza and salad that as supposed to be ready at 6:00 pm. Salad not ready at 6:00 pm and I waited 40 minutes for the salad while the pizza was sitting and getting cold. Friend of mine from Marion took me here, said it was the best pizza in the world to him and I have to admit it was darn good. The salad bar wasn't large but everything was fresh and tasty. It's a throwback to the 70's when Walt's first opened once you enter through the door . The first thing I noticed was the wood paneling on the walls popular back then. The salad bar was probably original before the newer ones got huge. Despite its size, the salad bar was quite good. Lettuce and all the other ingredients were crisp, fresh and well chilled. The cart was replenished regularly. Pizza was ok but not something I would drive out of the way for. The spaghetti was soupy. WORST dinning experience ever, over hour wait no pizza or sandwich! Waitress lied, said it was coming right out, manager stated order was not made because of short staffing. Guess we weren't only mad customers, manger stated he had been dealing with issue all night and laughed. Offered to make order, stating it would take less then 10 minutes, for a deep pan pizza lol. We left after manager stated we got two free salads and could leave if we didn't want to wait. Excellent Service, delicious pizza! Was hesitant based on some reviews but we were so glad we went! We went on a Friday night and the place was hopping! The parking lot was full and we were afraid we'd have a long wait. We were greeted by smiling and cheerful J'Lynne (hostess). We were seated quickly, and our server, Lisa, took our drink orders within minutes of us being seated. Despite their popular double decker pizza looking absolutely delicious, we were were in the mood for thin crust pizza. It was perfect - thin crispy crust, perfect sauce (not too sweet or tangy). Despite how busy the restaurant was, we had several servers stop by to make sure we'd been taken care of. The pasta dishes being served to other tables looked and smelled amazing.
