Visited Walter's Camp on my first canoe camp trip on 3/13/25. I was pleased to see that it wasn't busy. Tabitha, the camp host helped me get set up and gave me the lay of the land. The general store has a few items, merchandise, and even a bar back that is used when the camp is in full swing after Memorial Day according to Tabitha. I chose a far site at the edge of the property underneath two tamarisk/salt cedar trees which was great for shade. I launched my canoe at the concrete boat ramp and paddled the old Colorado River channel right out in front of the camp which is not lacking in it's scenery of Cibola Natl Wildlife Refuge and the beautiful Trigo Mountains Wilderness viewable eastward. Nighttime is where things came alive! Dozens of braying burros, coyotes, and owls that would hoot up a storm in the trees above me. An a/c or refrigeration until by the general store ran in cycles all night and was about as annoying as someone running a generator. The facilities provided had showers and pit toilets, all in good condition. Taking a moment to stretch/yoga before the morning paddle in the communal hang out area in front of the general store was a great idea. I was greeted by an amazing SW sherbet sunrise over the calm waters of the inner channel of the Colorado, it was spectacular. I'm typically a dispersed camper, so some of my gripes about the noise you can probably take with a grain of salt. Would I stay the night again? Sure, but I'd prefer something a bit more isolated. We had the occasion to stay and utilize Walter's Camp for a kayak trip last week. There were four of us, in two vehicles. We launched at Walter's Camp on a 4 day kayak trip down the Colorado River to Squaw Lake. I had visited Walter's Camp for the first time about 2 months before our trip, just to check out the location. The managers, Robert and May, were very helpful in describing what Walter's Camp is all about. They also offered a shuttle service for our vehicles to have them waiting for us at the end. A couple of us camped the night before the start of our kayak trip, whereas two others drove in that morning. It was a pleasant place to spend the night beforehand. Right on the Old Channel, very quiet. It was mid-week, so there was only 1 other family there that night. The next morning, we packed up our kayaks, the others arrived, and off we went. We were charged $8 each for the camping and launching. Robert and May, who work Saturday through Wednesday as Managers of Walter' Camp, take their "weekend" break on Thursday and Friday. At that time, they shuttled both of our vehicles down from Walter's Camp down to Squaw Lake. The whole shuttle plan worked flawlessly. When we landed at Squaw Lake, our vehicles were there, ready to be loaded and head off toward home. I felt it was a fair deal at $100 per vehicle, as it is an approximate 4 hour round-trip drive. It certainly saved us a lot of time at the end of tiring, but wonderful kayak trip. As others have stated, do not expect a plush resort at Walter's Camp. Do not expect plenty of provisions at a store. They do have flush toilets and hot showers -- an added plus for most campers. The location is along the Old Channel of the Colorado River, in a beautiful spot, and at the end of 5 mile graded-dirt road. Robert and May are very friendly and helpful. West Coast Watercraft Club returned to Walter's Camp last weekend for our 7th Annual year of enjoying the smooth waters of the Colorado... Brian and Rob did a fantastic job making sure our club members received A+ service upon arrival. The staff was courteous, professional and helpful. When our group of hungry watercrafter's pulled into the marina Brian, Rob and Robert had pre-loaded 5 gallon fuel jugs at the ready and had fuel pumps dispensing gas into 20 jet skis at 11 gallons each. During the fill up our members ordered pizza's and enjoyed their 2 hour break at Walter's Camp. When the rain stopped we were on our way back to Yuma, AZ. The next day was a bit more tedious as we had a more strict schedule to follow due to time constraints. We were traveling 160 miles round trip and Walter's Camp crew had to be ready for us. We arrived about an hour later than expected, and the crew helped to fill 22 watercrafts each fueling about 11 gallons. We left Walter's Camp heading for Blythe, CA where there was no fuel, we used our gasoline racks we had custom built for our skis. I called Robert twice to let him know we will be arriving at 4:30pm, after a group photo. We dashed back to Walter's Camp to refuel. Upon arrival after 80 miles of the trip, Walter's Camp crew was ready once again to fill those hungry jet skis and get us on our way back to Yuma. Darkness was approaching and it was critical we got back before 7PM. I want to express how thrilled I am with the new management at Walter's Camp making our experience pleasurable for all of our members. I have been going to Walters Camp every summer since I was a little girl. This place has camping available right on the river. If you have an RV and a ski boat, I guarantee you will have a great time. The sad part is I've seen this place go from well kept to run down in the past 15 years. Yeah the dirt road sucks, but you get to launch your boat right on the river. The food in the store is out of date and the gas is very expensive. We paddled into Walters camp 3 minutes before the store closed on Tuesday 10/16/18. I was pleasantly surprised to how friendly and helpful the management staff was to our small group. They kept the store open while we took a break, bought a few supplies, and drank a couple of beers. We were especially grateful for their hospitality after paddling for 1 mile against the current and a headwind in attempt to get some supplies. They also gave us some good tips and warned us of the shallow conditions/sandbars ahead of us. I will definitely plan to camp there for my next trip. read more

Walter's Camp is just about the last old-fashioned fishing camp on the Colorado River. This is a great place to launch your canoe or kayak for a three day trip down the Colorado River to either Martinez Lake or Squaw Lake. You can leave your vehicles here for a small daily fee. Although it is rustic, it is not as bad as others have reviewed. The people who run the place are friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are not dirty, they are just old. The shower felt great after camping for a couple of days. Although it's true that the campground for canoeists is a plain stretch of gravel, with one very big shade tree in the middle of it, that means there is plenty of room for you to stage your trip, if you have canoe trailers, lots of Boy and Girl Scouts running around, lots of canoes to unload, etc. There is plenty of room there. If you just want to do some easy kayaking it's good to note that Walter's Camp is not on the main channel of the river, so there is very little current. However, reaching the main river is just a matter of paddling down this side channel for a few minutes. The gravel road to get to Walter's Camp is bumpy but I drove my Honda Accord on it just fine, although slowly. The road adds to the adventure, rather than detracting from it. If you want frills, go to Lake Havasu where everything is paved. If you want to experience something like the good old days along the Lower Colorado River, Walter's Camp is a good choice. I wish there were more off-the-beaten path places like it, but nowadays far too many places are heavily developed. read more

Worst issue is the 5+ mile dirt road drive off the main highway. Very dusty and severely rough. If you have a decent rig pass and go somewhere else. Otherwise be prepared to drive at 5-10 MPH to avoid damage to your vehicle. Secondly the rate is high. Quoted $25 for dry camping plus another $15 if I wanted full hook up. At $40 a night save your money for a nice place. The plus is the beautiful location with river access. Bathrooms are not very well maintained but doable. Water is funky and I wouldn't drink it or fill my fresh water tank there. read more

Do not give the park your hard-earned moneymy jetboat friends the owners / managers are very unwelcoming to unfamiliar faces on a power trip I paid like everyone else spent money at the store spent all day away from the park while approaching the park respecting the no wake zone my wife was on a small quiet standup jetski 30sec ahead I pull up with my kids hearing this male half owner lecturing my wife with a raised voice I jump out of the boat he quickly changes his tone. There is so many other places to launch and have fun you will not see me here kissing there ass treating them with the respect they didn't earn all because they inherited a property! read more

You can buy ice, pay and use their boat launch, get a beer leave a 90% tip, buy sodas, but don't dare use their restroom unless your a resident. My wife and sister in law were aggressively berated by the bar tenders/owners for using the restrooms. Both a male and female were verbally attacking them. The female followed them into the restroom to continue the assault. I guess you can spend $75.00 and get your goods just don't expect any restroom privileges from the drunken staff members. read more

As the others said the road is long and rough at times, the park is not 5 star! But you cant find better family fun on the water its not crowded, its great for kids and family's. It is a secret place for many who like the style that it is. All of my family and friends that join us have great weekends. But if you want service like you are at a 5 star resort, go to a five star resort ! read more

We love Walter's Camp. The new owner Bryan opened up his store to make us pizzas, beers, and great conversation 2 hours after they were already closed for the night. We really appreciated that. We like the location because it is more mellow than Havasu or Parker, but still has amazing scenery and an awesome stretch of river. It's our favorite place to get away. read more

I stayed at Walter's Camp in January of this year on a 3 1/2 month kayaking trip down the Green and Colorado rivers. I actually had just stopped to ask some questions about the river farther down and Brian (the owner), Robert, May,and a couple of frequent visitors convinced me to stay, as it was getting late. They kept the store open late, gave me a soda and great conversation-very appreciated by a solo paddler. The bathrooms and showers were clean, nice camping area with a great view. I came back about a week later with some friends to paddle the Picacho area again and was treated like an old friend. Walter's Camp is all about the friends and the river, no unnecessary frills, just what you need to get away from the things you don't need. Looking forward to visiting again! read more

My family has been enjoying the Colorado River recreation opportunities for over thirty years. We have taken many canoe and kayak groups many miles down river and launched and used our pontoon boat for family activities from the Imperial Dam in the south to Bullhead City in the north and have camped at just about every place in between over the years. There are many things Walters Camp is not, if you are used to five star accommodations and prices that go with it. But there are many things that it is that are hard to find elsewhere: fuel, store, peaceful, quiet, easy to launch and load because it is on the inlet, a mile from the much faster river current. Because it is not directly on the river and is a no wake zone you seldom hear a loud powerboat. You can just walk into the water and take a relaxing swim or float around without getting run over. You can kayak or canoe or boat for miles through the interesting maze that is the inlet north of camp or head down river from the inlet entrance for 40 miles to Imperial Dam with camping spots along the way. When you look to either shore you do not see endless RV resorts but rather the river and desert beauty. Sand bars along the way provide great resting areas. Several lakes along the way also for more good fishing or boating. We have found the camp hosts to be quite friendly and have become friends over the years. Maybe that is because we try to follow campground rules and we know that everyone can have an occasional bad day. Restrooms are adequate and clean and were illuminated after dark. Showers warm and wet. Dog friendly. Good fishing. We are fans, for sure. We have camped here way more often than anywhere else. We like what Walters Camp is, and do not fret about what it is not. read more

My family just went to Walter's camp for Spring Break 2016. It was very peaceful, clean and family oriented. We had easy access to the river to launch our boat and my kids had a great time in the evenings fishing on shore and from their fishing doc. I was pleased that they had hook-ups for our RV and a dump station when we left. We will be back with our quads to try out the riding nearby and my husband is looking forward to going back for hunting season. read more
