They have improved enormously since Covid chaos. They have numerous organic options across the grocery section, and their pharmacy is first rate. The insurance person in the pharmacy works miracles, and everyone is accurate. The app helps find things, since staff are mostly all busy taking orders out to cars, and it's hard to get help inside. The outdoor pickup can sometimes take 45 minutes of waiting after they text that it's ready, so I've given up on that. read more

I love the store, but not enough check out stands open only opening 4 is not enough. Most of the time you wait for ever in self check out, then you go to regular check out you wait again for ever can't win. Also you should teach the people who work there to learn where everything is or have a training class. Because looking thing's up on those phones they have don't cute it. read more

They only have 4 checkout lines with cashiers - we stood 40 minutes in line. Self-checkout is for small amount of items and should not be for people getting groceries for the week! Pretty good variety at this store, however. read more

Even by the standard of a WalMart, this place is terrible. They're practically trying to become the center of a COVID outbreak. While they have all the usual signage up about masks and distancing being required, I watched as multiple people walked in without masks and the greeter said nothing. I saw dozens of people without masks inside the store. Even saw a group of maskless people having a casual conversation with a staff member. Aside from their total disregard for pandemic best practices, it's a dingy, cluttered looking store, poorly lit, dirty and frankly kind of depressing. The only reason it is able to stay in business is probably the lack of competition in the area. read more

We stopped here to pick up stuff for Easter Dinner. They actually had reasonably priced leg of lamb and everything else we needed. The Easter Bunny was even there! Our granddaughter loved that! The store (even the mensroom) was clean and the staff was friendly. read more

I moved to the UP from ATL in the late summer of 2014. I also lived in metro Detroit for a few years. I can tell you that hands down this is the most pleasant Walmart I have ever been to. The employees (and customers) are very friendly and helpful. I usually shop very late 11pm-2am and normally a Walmart is a ghost town during this time. At the Houghton Walmart there are many employees available stocking shelves and available to help you. I wanted to buy a desk that weighted about 100 pounds. An employee took it up to the front with a cart and another employee helped me get it to my car. In metro Detroit I've dealt with cashiers that made it know that they hate their job. In ATL, it's nearly impossible to find an employee (especially in the electronics section) to help you with something. My impression is that in the UP, customer service is much more important. This Walmart has a great small town atmosphere. Also, this Walmart may be the only place in the Houghton/ Hancock area that sells beer late until 2am. It seems that gas stations stop selling at 12pm. read more

BAD- the worst Walmart ever. Somehow- so much of their grocery merchandise is damaged- crushed. I mean they are obviously getting crushed boxes for a discount and selling the product at full price. I was just in Walmart. I'm sitting in the parking lot right now feeling pretty crappy. Had an employee blow off an elderly man right in front of me refusing to help him. I had a question too as the others were busy work credit card errors but I was scared to ask in fear I would too be snapped at. All I wanted were some page protectors for a recipe book project I'm trying to make. I looked for them in the section next to the papers and binders which is a disaster... papers all over nothing organized. Just a disaster. Looks like a tornado hit it. I don't mind a little bit of a mess as I've worked retail before and it's hard to keep up work all the messy customers but this is beyond.. anyways.. I walked up to this man who's in the electronic department. I said "I hate to bother you.. I know your busy but do you happen to know where any of the page protectors are?" He barely looked in my direction and was super irritated sounding and just said "they should be on the back wall" and then continued saying that if they aren't there then he doesn't know and that he's BUSY with another customer which I already knew.... I just said "well... I figured I'd at least ask.." and then walked away. He was super defensive and rude. I've never seen such horrid service at a Walmart. The other employees are all super helpful usually. I'm not trying to be a Karen and get this guy fired but jeez he made me feel unwelcome. I left without the things I needed. Just wanted to leave. Was at your Walmart in houghton MI. on saturday night Jan. 5 . My cart was full and you had 1 checkout open. As soon as I entered the checkout the girl told me she was closing and I would have to use the self checkout, this WAS NOT close to the time your store closes either! REALLY??!! I had almost $200 of stuff in that cart ! she said someone would help me but of course no one came. Was so mad if I DIDNT LIVE AN HOUR AWAY I WOULD HAVE LEFT EVERYTHING RIGHT THERE AND LEFT! OR BETTER YET, DUMPED THE WHOLE WORKS ALL OVER THE FLOOR! EVERYONEForIt would've given Walmart 5 stars, but now that they've become mainly self-checkout, I'm not. It is a move that benefits only themselves, except there is more theft at self checkouts. Persons with 10 items or less are benefited too, I suppose. No waiting behind "two-cart"customers. Seniors often have trouble with the computerized system. Persons with many items cannot do it as well as a trained cashier, further slowing down the system. Instead of having members hovering around the self-checkout, resetting registers, checking out he accuracy of scans, etc., they could be manning registers and speeding people through. Most times I've been there there are no assistance checkout lanes open, or if there are, there are long lines of customers. That should indicate to them the need of cashiers at tills. And, frankly I feel used. In my nearly 70 years I've worked in four'department'stores like Walmart. Plus I've been a customer of Walmart since the 80s in the several states we have lived . I assume it is called a 'cost saving' move for the store, but because I am doing the work of a cashier, I should be getting paid for doing it, getting an employee's discount, or a rebate. It's been said it lowers prices, but compared to stores that don't have self- checkout, it is minimal at best. As far as the employees are concerned, I have absolutely no complaint and go out of their way to help me, especially in inding things with recent changes in its 'geography'. My major annoyance issue is the not-well-thought-out system now in place. PLEASE return to the previous system. Frankly, everyone I have talked to has hated the change. EVERYONE!. read more

This Walmart SUPERstore (not just an average one) has the cheapest gas around for the Upper Peninsula Michigan area. For all those winter snow-bunnies or nature lovers who visit the UP, be sure to fill up your gas here on your way up Route 41 to save yourself a pretty penny. Also get any other things you may need during your trip while you have access to them like toilet paper, bug spray, camping stuff, ice melting windshield washer fluid, shovels, snacks, etc. or else you will pay for it, literally. This store is AWFUL. My mother went to buy a laptop from there and that day they "couldnt find the keys" to the laptop cage. Apparently some guy had took them home. Not only that but everyone in the electronics was acting like it was no big deal! I was shocked. The next day we went back- still no keys!. Finally they found a set (which apparently was there the whole time), and my mom bought her laptop. She took it home and it didnt work. So i called them and told them what had happened they told me there was nothing they could do because there wasnt another in stock. They told me they would have one shipped from a walmart an hour away and it would be there in 3 days. Well i called back everyday starting 3 days later, day 3 it wasnt there, 4, 5, or 6. Finally a week later, they got a new shipment of them and she went to go return them. The lady was so mean to her she told her she needed a windows disk and her exact words were "dont come back without it". My moms laptop never came with a windows disk neither does most laptops these days!! Nobody knows whats going on there and are so rude and ignorant. For being my local Wal-Mart, I shop here often. We are very limited on our options for shopping in our area. One thing that seems to be a constant issue is waiting in line. Yes, I use the self check out when I have a few items, but not when I have an entire cart full. Today, I was lucky enough to get in the line of a check out attendant who's primary focus was chit chat with every person in line. After waiting for what seemed like a half hour, it was finally my turn to check out! My check out guys name was William and he felt the need to yell out everything I was buying..."cucumbers! Asparagus! You got the whole lamp fixture, ooohh popcorn!". This went on throughout the entire process. Luckily, the things I bought were nothing personal, but if they were, I can only imagine how he would've handled calling those things out. I can't foresee this guy being employed long if his "calling out" items continues. Definitely not one of my best experiences here. They need to work on employees and having more employees available to avoid long lines. read more

Until two days ago, i would have given this walmart more stars-- a lot more-- but I had such a horrible experience Sunday afternoon that I am still in shock from it. A tall cashier named Steve was incredibly rude to me and deliberately yelled at me in front of other customers to achieve maximum humiliation. He made an accusation that was ludicrous. I spoke to an assistant mgr Dave on two occasions by phone, and he said they gave Steve some "coaching." He said the camera footage verified what I had said, yet he did not seem to consider it important. I've been a cashier, if I'd ever acted like Steve, I'd have been fired on the spot. I felt the incident was minimized and swept under the rug. read more

Walmart has great inexpensive haircuts! Houghton is too far away for most chains including the inexpensive hair cutting places, but there is one tucked away in Walmart. I've had 3 cuts there, that were well done, quick, and around $15. read more

I don't mind using the self serve check out line when I have a few items . Too often there are not enough cashiers scheduled and often with a full cart of items I am checking myself out...Refilling a prescription has become a nightmare. Not only has the prescription been ordered online and I have waited a day for it to be processed but I drive 26 miles one way to pick up my prescription and I expect my prescription to be filled. The pharmacy does not follow through with email notifying the customer if they don't have the medication. Order placed at least 24 hours in advance, get there, wait in line for a good 20 minutes average, get to the pick up window and either the prescription has not been filled or they do not have the medication and have to order and ask one to come back the next day...This has happened to me the last 2 times I online refilled scripts...This inconvenience means I am driving 104 miles to get script processed...this is unacceptable. Up-front employees are very friendly and associates are very friendly. There is only one department where I hear associates talking negatively and this has happened on many occasions and that is your ladies fitting room area. Your Craft department (yarn) department associate is always busy but she always greets me with a hello....always... read more

This supercenter is very unstable. It is hard to find anyone to help me unless I go to the grocery area, and the people over there have no idea about anything in sporting goods. It definitely has less people working than 5 years ago. It seems like everyone else is always running registers instead of manning their areas. I usually shop in the evenings so all I know is what happens then. I have been trying to shop elsewhere because walmart's selection of merchandise has been progressively replacing known brands with their own private label "great value". I don't want to put millions of americans out of jobs by buying great value all the time and supporting walmarts greed. This supercenter has been a detriment to this local community by eliminating good paying jobs and replacing them with minimum wage jobs just like it does everywhere else, except this area is was already very poor to begin with. The associates that I do find are usually helpful and nice, but they seem very overwhelmed all the time with too much to do. It must be very stressful working there. They should treat their employees better. read more
