Dirty bathrooms, small store, not enough registers open. Dismal store overall that felt like an odd time capsule.

Tiny little store off 290. Okay selection of items. Bathrooms are dirty. Checkout slow.

Well, it's better than Bastrop. But you can't even get sliced cheese from the deli at 10:15 am…read more HEB needs competition in these parts!!! Two stars for the ability to park AND get a cart in under an hour. Bastrop HEB really has set the bar low on those requirements. I guess we're back to driving 3 hours round trip for grocery shopping in Georgetown... where they have competition, multiple stores, and I've never been told, "Sorry. We're cleaning the machine. After being open for FOUR hours? Either you need to have two machines in rotation or... do this before/after the deli opens. Shocker to get prepared for the day BEFORE the day starts.

I went to the one in La Grange, as it was pretty much the only true grocery store in the area (yeah, there is that other one attached to a big box store down the road, but it just isn't the same). Normally grocery stores have a certain layout, and while this store held somewhat true to that typical layout, the one thing it did not have was the standard dimensions. In this store the aisles are relatively short, but there are a bunch of them, which means that finding the right aisle for an item can be a bit tougher because of the way things are distributed through the store. You still have your various sections, like your meat department and your produce, though the deli was in a very odd spot at the front of the store with the access to it pointed away from the entrance to the store. I had to walk the whole way around the store before I was able to find the deli! The store is clean and decently lit, so finding what you need isn't a problem. Variety seemed to be there to some extent, though the deli didn't have any fried chicken which seemed odd to me... baked whole chickens, sure, but no deep fried chicken. Anyway, if you are looking for a grocery store in La Grange, I would say HEB is the place to go, and bypass that big box store down the road.

Yesterday morning when I was driving to work I realized that I'd forgotten to eat/bring breakfast,…read moreand remembered that there was a place on the way that advertised breakfast tacos. I made sure I had a little bit of cash and decided to try my luck. Not sure whether this place is still a gas station or is a former gas station ... they do still have pumps but I dunno if they're functional. When I walked in I was confused because it just looked like a convenience store, and I didn't see any employees. Then I saw the counter in the back and a woman working there. I decided to see if I could order in English (native Texan so I do know the Spanish words for basic breakfast taco components, but I wanted to know if I'd be able to come back and order something more complicated), so I asked for a breakfast taco with potato, egg, bacon, and cheese. She understood, made sure I wanted just one, and pulled out a huge homemade tortilla, then loaded it up with all of the ingredients. She then asked if I wanted salsa, and when I replied in the affirmative she got a squeeze bottle out of the refrigerator and put some on the taco. She then wrapped the taco up and put it into a paper bag with some napkins, and started talking to the next customer. I was unsure about paying since she'd dismissed me without asking for payment and I hadn't seen anybody else, but when I walked up to the cash register at the front a man appeared and told me the taco was $2.50. I was surprised as that seems pretty steep for a breakfast taco, but well, it was more than twice the size of the ones I usually get, so whatever. I ate the taco when I got to work. The highlight was definitely the homemade tortilla. The bacon was pretty good, it was in bite-size pieces (rather than whole stringy strips or bacon-bit size) and was crispy like I like it. The potatoes were cooked well if a little bland. Eggs seemed a bit greasy but that's to be expected. Cheese was cheese, and I'm glad she went easy on the salsa because it was pretty oily and spicy. Usually I get hungry for lunch by about 10am (I still wait at least an hour after that to eat though) because usually I eat a bowl of cereal, or a yogurt, or a granola bar for breakfast. Yesterday I just ate my salad out of habit ... that taco was so filling that I didn't even get hungry for lunch. Guess I could have cut it in half and had half for breakfast and half for lunch, so that makes it a good value for the $2.50. Not sure whether this foray into Giddings breakfast tacos will be the last, or the first of many.

Stopped here yesterday on the way from Austin to Houston and I'm glad I did. Sadly, they didn't…read morehave the homemade tortillas that I had heard about, but the tacos were still excellent. I had two tacos, one with perfectly seasoned carnitas and one with juicy pastor. Salsas were quite good too. Don't be put off by the look of the place (it's a little run down). To me, it's on the verge of 5 stars. Slightly fresher condiments and homemade tortillas would put it over the top.
