I reached out to Concrete Solutions Plus and got a hold of Gary to get a quote for floor, which…read moredesperately needed our floors fixed in under 2 weeks. Gary was super helpful/responsive and was able to start on our project a few days after agreeing to go with them! Steve cleaned our floors & put down a rich black dye with matte finish and two days later it was done! Love how the floors turned out! Thank you Gary & Steve!!!

Description Of Work: The project was installation of a…read moredecorative concrete floor in our 640 square foot basement. The project included grinding the existing concrete to prepare the surface, leveling the floor with fabric and a large amount of repair mortar, applying a concrete microtopping, applying dye to the microtopping, and finishing the floor with sealer. The project cost $5540. Comments: We are pleased with the overall appearance of the floor, but I cannot say that we are satisfied with Concrete Solutions Plus. We chose this company because we were impressed with Mac's initial professionalism and assurances that our satisfaction was important. Mac estimated that the job would take 5-6 days; it ended up taking over two weeks because they were working on two projects simultaneously and had not made allowances for unforeseen events. There were numerous other lapses in professionalism, including failure to provide us with a copy of the contract, disorganization in preparation of the floor samples, and a communication failure that lost us a day's work. We were not able to inspect the final dye application before the floor was finished, which was something Mac had promised we would be able to do. When we saw the finished floor, we discovered that the color did not match the sample we had selected. There were also several circular defects in the dye in a very prominent location on the floor. When I politely raised my concerns with Mac, he said that the defects in the dye were a common complication of using the applicator machine. He said that he was sorry that they were in such a prominent position, but that they could not be fixed. I understand that these things can happen. However, he did not make any adjustment to the bill or offer any other solution. For the most part, we are pleased with the overall appearance of the floor. However, given our experience, I cannot recommend this company. $5500 is a lot of money to pay for a floor with a mistake in it.

D.Masonry - The scary pillar Before-and-After. (1930's "clinker" brick is supposed to look uneven)

And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.
