I always take time time to read other people's reviews before I write my own to see if there are any shared experiences that I can relate to. Over all I see that my experience with Dr. Townsend is just as good a most of his other reviews. I started committing g to Dr. Townsend after I moved and my old chiropractor was just too far out of my way (I really do miss my old chiropractor). But Dr. Townsend is super talented with his techniques he uses for adjustments. His availability on his schedule is a lot more open than some other Chriopractic offices I have been to. Listen, I know you don't believe in things like magic. But I can honestly say Dr Robert Townsend is a Bone Wizard. That man does miracles with his hands and has fixed me many a time, and more importantly my back. I came in here at the end of May/start of June because my back started hurting pretty horribly. I made the appointment the night before as this was one of the few places with online reservations, and chose 8am to be the first appointment of the day given my severe back pain. When I came in, they gave me an intake form, which literally has the outline of a person, and you're asked to mark where it hurts. So, I did. I marked my mid back, on the left hand side. I then found out that despite it being 8am, the doctor was not yet there. When he arrived at 8:05 or so (sorry, my expectation is that if you have 8am appointments, you're probably arriving before that...), he took me in the back and proceeded to tell me he had allergies, which was why he was sniffling constantly - which felt rather disgusting as he was working on me. We discussed my back and I, again, told him where the pain was: my mid back on the left side. We discussed that I already have an ergonomic set up at work, and he theorized that it was my rib and proceeded to do some clicking manipulation with an instrument. Great. Except, he kept working on my right side. I assumed that he would then move on to my left. And he did, very briefly. He then told me he was done. I asked him why he worked on my right side, and he said he followed where he was feeling it. I said ok, but if it hurts on the left, shouldn't you do some work on the left. He looked puzzled for a second, then picked up the chart where I had marked where it hurts, and, I kid you not, said "Oh you're right, it's on the left". He then paused, and told me that because it's rib pain, nothing he did would help anyways, and I should really consider getting a good bra and an ergonomic setup and hope for the best and come back if I wanted to. So my back went out on Dec 10. I had sat in just a slightly awkward position for half an hour holding my sleeping infant daughter, and I felt a little odd when I got up. For the next 2 days, my back hung around in sore back purgatory, and then I woke up and it had completely gone out. I couldn't hold my body upright for more than a few seconds at a time. It was a little funny at first, in a black humor kind of way that healthy people experience when they get hurt. Ha! Look at me scooting along the ground with my hands and toes. Hey, I just peed in a big yogurt container because I can't make it to the bathroom. I should Facebook this! I crawled for 3 days, hoping I'd wake up magically fixed, but that didn't happen. Once my sense of humor and optimism died, I saw a medical doctor and got muscle relaxants and painkillers (and became part of the epidemic!). These helped me a tiny bit. I was able to sleep on my back and walk for very short distances, taking tiny steps at a time, with my face twisted in agony. The next day I saw Dr. Townsend. I had never been to a chiropractor, and wasn't sure I believe in them, but I was desperate. I was out of sick days and starting to use vacation time. I was starting to wonder if I was going to have to learn how to be an invalid dad to my two kids. Dr. Townsend did a few tests and then cracked my lower back twice. Immediately, I was able to walk without making the scream face. I stayed home the next day to recover a bit more and then returned to work. I went to work the next day and got another adjustment and also picked up a belt for my beck. I went to the doctor again one last time a week later because I had to drive 7 hours to LA the next day. (My back held up great.) It's been almost a month since my back went out, and I'm almost back to normal. I've stopped wearing the belt a while ago, and I can work out again. Oh, yeah, I can pick up and play with my kids too. I probably should have listed that first. A few tips: (1) Go to Dr. Townsend or another chiropractor sooner rather than later. (2) Ice the shit out of your back after adjustments and the next day. (3) Buy a belt. I got an awesome one at Safeway for under $20. (4) Don't do any twisty stretches after adjustments. I looked up lower back stretches and did them a few times a day. One involved twisting my legs, which made my lower back pop. Don't do that. read more

Neck pain to backflips! Actually. Had been working on a friend's car and earned a really stiff neck, a tight knot on the right side of where the neck meets the skull, like I've never felt before in my life. Limited mobility was an understatement. This is days before a 4 day, 1500 mile roadtrip. With time running out, I found Robert's practice right here through Yelp, did a bit of reading on his website and showed up to the office. Other recommended chiros did not have appointments open same day, so the walk-in aspect was clutch. 5 minute intake, 3 or 4 pages on a clipboard later, I was taken into the room and a couple minutes later Robert started working on me. He explained his process and some theory behind what goes wrong and how it is addressed. In and out in about 30 minutes. Fast-forward 24 hours after the visit, I have full mobility back and feel great for the roadtrip ahead. Fast-forward 5 days after the visit, I am literally doing backflips on top of Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley. Writing this review about a week later and I feel great. The receptionist who in my opinion is the face of the business was not thorough, was looking to charge me $60 out of pocket when I have absolutely no co-pay she acted as if there was some mystery that needed to be solved when clearly I handed you my insurance card for you to check not to have the card and tell me that I still needed to pay you $60 and that you would send me a check that would offset the balance if there was one left over without even checking to see what my co-pay was a complete waste of time your receptionist needs to be retrained in my opinion Due to the fact a hassle free patient walked in who's insurance completely covers the procedure needed and now no longer wants to do business with you. read more

After 2 visits I am pain free. Range of motion, improved. I feel back to 100% normal mobility lol. If you are a first-time chiro patient who needs extra time and attention from your chiropractor, this clinic may not be he right place for you. If you've been adjusted and know what to expect, this man is awesome! What I've taken away from my experience here is that Robert knows what he's doing and he's quick about it, lol. He's friendly and does chat, but it's quick. That's it - you're in, you're out. 15 min, you're done! And you def feel better. I used to work for a chirp that sold treatment plans and when I asked Robert why he doesn't do them he said, "I wouldn't be a very good chiropractor if I had to see you everyday, right?" Lol. I cannot recommend this practice more. It's incredibly efficient and affordable. I booked an appointment online on a Saturday afternoon after a week of fairly debilitating headaches and was seen first thing Monday morning. Dr. Townsend is really great at explaining what he's doing in the first intake session. He gave me a really thorough adjustment, it didn't take long but I didn't feel rushed. If you don't like to deal with BS, this is your place. I deal with BS all the time when I try to go to the doctor. When I hurt my back, Kaiser was the last place I wanted to go because I knew they'd charge me a $70 copay to tell me my back pain is normal and prescribe me some painkillers. My coworker recommended Robert's practice when I mentioned wanting to go to a chiropractor but not being able to afford it. I was willing to pay his prices so I didn't even have to go to Kaiser, but thankfully my copay is super affordable so I paid even less for each of my visits so far which has been really great. I highly recommend Robert's services! He is very straightforward and patient when explaining how to care for your body after your adjustment. I really appreciate that because sometimes I am scared of asking questions, but he makes you feel comfortable to do so. I'm grateful to have found him! read more

This is the Chiropractor you want to see if you need excellent, first rate, affordable, short term care. He also has same day appointments when you actually need because when you are in pain, you don't want to wait days or weeks for a chiropractor appointment. This office also a wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful front desk admin staff, which can really make or break a business. I've been to see Dr. Townsend 3 times now and each time he's made my body and thus my life so much better. My first visit was for low back pain and I was cured after 1 visit. Then, a few months later I was suffering from serious mid back pain for more than a week and a half and I couldn't even take a full breath in without serious muscle pain. Immediately after that visit, I could BREATHE again without pain. I followed his advice to ice it 4-5 times a day and felt a good 50% better the next day. Yesterday I went for a very reasonably priced followup and now I'm 90% better, just waiting for the muscles to heal now. Dr. Townsend may have saved my life. No hyperbole. I have awful posture, despite my best efforts, rolfing, massage, etc. My shoulders are usually pretty hunched up. I came into Dr. Townsend's office a couple of weeks ago and he did some thorough adjustments, spent a long time on me. I left walking fully upright, with my shoulders lower than I've ever felt them. Here's where the life-saving comes in. Turns out I have an enlarged lymph node that wasn't visible when I was hunching. When my shoulders dropped, it became very visible. Unlike other chiros that like to talk to you for 20 minutes and work on you for 5 so that they can charge you $150-200 (or bill your insuance $400 - this has happened to me), Dr. Robert Townsend, skips the long talks and goes right to work, only charging you an affordable $40 for repeat visits. Dr. Townsend is the best chiropractor you will ever see. This is not a cute exaggeration. I have seen many, many chiropractors across the country. It will take me some time to get explain myself... so if you're not a reader, expand this review and behold it's great length. Consider that it has taken a life changing intervention for someone living with chronic pain to want to put in the effort to write such a dissertation. The quickest tl;dr endorsement I can give for him is this: I saw my previous chiropractor (with a rock solid 5 stars on yelp) 39 times in one year. Last year, according to my insurance records, I saw Rob 6 times. The man is the bone whisperer. Now it's story time. I have a very old spinal injury that healed poorly. It causes me to sleep in unnatural positions and periodically wake up with massive headaches. I've moved around some.. I travel a bit for work. After some doing I found a great doc. He was a beast of a man who could toss a large guy such as myself around like a toddler with a rag doll. He moved away. For some time, I searched for his replacement. Practitioners with a similar stature were by the book but weren't getting it quite right. The, "expensive is good" tactic lead me to a handful of well-reviewed but sorely ineffective doctors whose aims were not to treat efficiently, but rather to show me with lasers and ipads how I could *eventually feel better* if I agreed to purchase a lengthy and, duh, expensive treatment plan. I would leave these session feeing a little better, but not great. It was like having a really bad itch scratched with a feather duster. As soon as I was out the door I couldn't wait for next week's session, just waiting for the day I'd feel 'better' better. To make matters worse, there were still days that I'd wake up in pain like we haven't made any sort of progress at all - the earliest I would get in for an 'emergency' adjustment would be within a few days of me calling. No way to live. I eventually came to the conclusion that this was by design, and realized that the Moroccan mint cucumber water next to the Carrara marble water feature in the lobby was actually being paid for by a blatant lack of effectiveness. I spent the next year trying to teach my husband how to adjust me based on how I was manipulated by pros over the years. Don't do that. That's bad. Fast forward to a couple years ago. I'm having one of my stupid headaches and I'm sitting in traffic on Grand. I look over and see a sign: "Walk-In Chiropractic". Okay, that's half the battle right there - like you, I'm really freaking busy. I never know when the pain is going to strike. My next two thoughts: "that's good to know, I should really try them out", "I'm in traffic and there are two open parking spots right in front, pull over, idiot". I went in, and had the best adjustment I've ever had. I actually felt good when I left! Enough about me. Rob is a master at his craft. He's the only chiropractor that I've seen continually check your motion as he adjusts you. That's just freaking science right there. He values wellness over financial gain. My insurance company was even shocked at how reasonable his prices are. His out of pocket prices are unbelievable. I've heard him tell patients numerous times "you're better off doing [this] instead". He's got great bedside manner. He's got a calm, pleasant demeanor, he's kind without mincing words about your treatment at all, and he's a genuinely great conversationalist, to boot. He does have a secret weapon - in the front of house, Aspen is very quietly cranking the cogs. She's always a few moves ahead - anticipating everyone's needs before they realize it. It's not easy to notice, but she very casually juggles scheduling, insurance, intakes, exits... and, well.. Rob, with precision. The two of them make the perfect team. Go in as needed/as issues arise; go in for routine maintenance. When he says he can fix most things in 3 visits, it's not BS. If it's something more serious, he'll be straight with you. If you can make an appointment, great. If you just need to go and don't mind a short wait, just drop by. It all works. Convenient, honest, talented, and reasonably priced. Another post below described the experience as Quantity over Quality. I could not agree more. I had never been to a chiropractor in my 45 years, but an ill-advised lift rendered me hunched over in pain and unable to move. So I searched for a well-rated chiropractor on Yelp and came across this office. The receptionist who answered my call was comforting and friendly and was even able to get me into the office that afternoon. My lucky day! The experience in the office was absolutely abysmal. Dr. Townsend came into the room to see me after a short 15 minute wait, asked some simple questions - what I had done, how I had done it while constantly cracking jokes which were neither funny nor relevant ) i.e. "Still getting morning wood?" and made the assumption that I had a problem with my L5. No xrays, no scans, nothing. He then asked me to lay on the table, clicked me in literally 4 different places (I counted) with a chiropractic activator (NO MANUAL MANIPULATION), and told me to ice it. That's it. He saw me for a total of 11 minutes. First visit ever. I subsequently went to a different chiropractic office (less expensive even!) where spoke to me about any and all injuries/physical trauma in my life, did two scans of my spine and nerves, and xrays. Then manually adjusted me - explaining with each adjustment what was being done (on a spine skeleton), gave me a home treatment plan and even agreed to see me the next day (because I was flying out of the country) which was normally a day the office was closed. I feel amazing and have a regular treatment plan. So I'm convinced that chiropractic care works. I just think Dr. Townsend is a Bozo. I have never written a negative review on Yelp about ANYTHING, I typically feel that everyone is entitled to a bad day. This experience was so alarmingly incompetent, and unprofessional that I was compelled to give feedback. I would strongly recommend you find one of the many other fantastic chiropractors in the Bay Area. I also wish they would stop mailing, and emailing their marketing material. Dr. Rob rocks! I am always concerned about getting treated well as a plus-size woman when going to a new health practitioner, particularly one who is going to put their hands on me. Also, I tend to anticipate the awkward atmosphere when I say that I'm a performing dance artist. Well, nothing of this kind happened. This man has helped me SO many times. I was extremely skeptical about seeing a chiropractor but he was referred to me by someone at my gym several years ago who had severe back issues and had seen many chiropractors in his life. Robert sensed my apprehension and was very understanding. He's very friendly, super gentle and gives great suggestions on what can be done at home to help relieve pain. He also isn't a hustler that's just trying to make you pay for visits you don't need. He genuinely cares about your well-being. Robert is an exceptional Chiropractor and more importantly a great person. I initially came in to see my wrist, and at first I thought he forgot about addressing my issue but Robert gave me a comprehensive examination, and by working with other parts of my body was able to fix my wrist. Robert was amazing at noticing what else was wrong with my body. He seemed to notice everything that was wrong with me and pointed out a few things that I didn't know was wrong with my body. Robert was also well organized and gave me some great material specific to my problems right after my adjustment. I got my receipt in the mail very quickly as opposed to other chiropractor I've been to that take several weeks. His practice is reasonably priced and is not the type of chiropractor to try to over sell you on anything. I met Rob at Club One in Oakland. I had seen him there several times over the course of a few months doing chair massage. I am pretty picky about who I let touch me - so it took me a while before I finally forked over the dough and plopped down in his chair. I only did this because I saw his little sign that said "chiropractor". HA! good deal - he must know something about the back. Wow. I was amazed at his ability to adjust me and use different techniques to get my spine to relax. Long story short - I immediately booked an appointment to go see him for further work. I have now been seeing him for a few weeks and I can tell you that I feel much freer and more mobile. I have a long history of working with other chiropractors who were very good - so I kinda went into this with some high expectations - and I was not disappointed. Rob is very caring and genuinely is interested in making his patients feel better over the long haul. I highly recommend him - especially if you are a first timer - he is thoughtful and listens to you and will offer suggestions of therapies outside of his core competency if he thinks they would benefit you. Finally - cost is always a factor as most insurances don't fully cover chiropractic. He is very affordable! This was my first experience with Dr. Townsend and I will definitely be back. I woke up with incredible back pain and couldn't get out of bed by myself. My first reaction was to go to my Kaiser urgent care clinic, and I was told no doctor could see me that day, so I tried to find a walk-in/short notice chiropractor to help. Dr. Townsend was able to see me the same day. He's got a great sense of humor and was able to give me instant relief! The receptionist was friendly and informative, the office is very clean and tidy, and there was convenient street parking (as well as a small lot in the back of the building if I'm not mistaken) I didn't feel I had to wait very long at all. Pricing was SO reasonable in my opinion ($77 for the initial visit and $40 for follow up visits). All in all it was a great first visit. read more
